A video appears to show a Westland Police Officer using a Taser on a man as he is holding his two-month-old baby. The incident happened on Friday night where neighbors were having a barbecue. Witnesses said police arrived because of a call about a fight. “We were just barbecuing, and we saw the cops come up,” neighbor Kelvin Williams said. “They came up and asked us who was fighting. We were like, ‘You got the wrong house.’”Williams said they didn’t understand what the officers meant. “At that point, my friend Ray got a little agitated like you’re coming over to my house, my property and you're asking me about something I don’t know about,” Williams said. According to witnesses, Ray Brown then began to argue with officers. Williams said that is when he decided to record video on his cell phone. In the video, officers told Brown was going to be arrested, then ordered Brown's son to be taken away from the scene. “That’s my child. He can be exactly where he’s at. Give me my child. Give me my child,” Brown said. Officers then crowd into Brown with a taser out. Nichole Skidmore, Brown’s girlfriend, and mother of two-month-old Christopher tried to take the baby.It appears in the video that Brown was still holding Christopher and in the process of passing him to Skidmore when officers deployed a Taser. “I had to catch the baby," Skidmore said. "I was in the street talking with the cops. I had to come over. The taser is on this side of him, and the baby is over here. As soon as they start tasing him the baby flew out of his hands and I had to grab him, or he would have fell.”Brown was arrested and placed in custody soon after that. According to a Facebook post by the Westland Police Community Partnership, Brown attempted to grab his child only after learning he would be arrested. The department says that officers chose to deploy a Taser due to the "close quarters," and that the child was also in the hands of the mother at the time the Taser was used.The Community Partnership also stated that a "thorough internal investigation" would be conducted.  2158

A study that was pre-published on Wednesday indicates that a coronavirus mutation is causing the virus to be more contagious, a study authored by the Houston Methodist Hospital found. The study, however, concluded that the virus is not more potent.The study examined 5,000 COVID-19 strains from the Houston metro area. The study found very two distinct waves over the summer.The researchers found that COVID-19 infections from the second wave contained the Gly614 amino acid replacement in spike protein. The researchers said that while this amino acid caused “significantly higher virus loads,” this did not increase the potency of the virus.“We found little evidence of a significant relationship between virus genotypes and altered virulence, stressing the linkage between disease severity, underlying medical conditions, and host genetics,” the study said. “Some regions of the spike protein - the primary target of global vaccine efforts - are replete with amino acid replacements, perhaps indicating the action of selection," according to a summary of the findings.The researchers said that the study is intended to help scientists understand the composition and trajectory of future infection waves.It is important to note that the study has not been peer reviewed, and was limited to cases in the Houston area. 1326

A San Diego teenager will use her family's Spring Break trip to Washington, D.C., to advocate for stronger gun control laws.Faith Campbell, a Sophomore at Frances Parker School in Linda Vista, already has a meeting set up with Representative Susan Davis to discuss gun reform. She also has a stack of hand written letters from herself and her classmates to deliver to other area Congressmen and women."A letter is really powerful," Campbell says. "It shows that someone took the time out of their day to write specifically to this person."Campbell says she wrote a letter to Representative Davis after the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in February. Rep. Davis wrote back asking is she would like to meet.Campbell took part in last month's March for Our Lives in San Diego, joining thousands of others to call for stricter gun control laws. But she says she doesn't want the momentum to stall now that the protests and marches are over.Now, Campbell is inviting all of her classmates and fellow teens to write letters. She says she'll deliver them while she's in DC."It doesn't really matter how many letters I get," she says.
