SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police confirmed Monday the arrest of a Yuma, Arizona police officer on suspicion of rape.Yuma Police officer Jared Elkins, 33, was taken into custody Friday morning on Marlborough Dr. near Adams Ave. in Kensington.San Diego Police said Elkins was off duty at this time of his arrest. He is a 7-year veteran of the force, the Associated Press reported.  Yuma Police are working to place Elkins on administrative leave.Elkins will be charged with rape, oral copulation, threat to do bodily harm, sex asault with a foreign object, and misdemeanor sexual assault, police said.Elkins was released on 0,000 bail Saturday and ordered to appear in court on Sept. 25. 709

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer announced Thursday that several more shoreline park areas and piers and boardwalks would be reopened this week amid the COVID-19 pandemic.Mayor Faulconer says the following will be reopened in June and July:June 8: East and West Mission Bay Parks will be open for park and water use, including parking lots at 100% capacity.June 8: Fiesta Island opens to pedestrians, dogs, and cyclists only.June 9: All piers and boardwalks within city limits reopen.June 12: Balboa Park Central Mesa reopens and all Balboa Park parking lots open at 100% capacity.July 6: Fiesta Island opens to vehicles.Gatherings are still prohibited and social distancing is still required at beaches and parks. Mayor Faulconer said active sports at the beach are still banned as well."We're continuing to make meaningful progress as we continue to reopen across San Diego," Faulconer said.This week, county beaches allowed visitors to sit, sunbathe, and relax on the sand, in addition to passive activities like walking and running.Ocean activities, like swimming, surfing, kayaking, and paddle-boarding continue to be allowed. "I was definitely hopeful that, once again, we’ll have a process of consulting with an administration that wants to do something in regards to immigration versus what I would describe as an iron fist against anyone who’s coming into the country," says Pedro Rios, the director of the American Friends Service Committee.President-elect Biden has already shared some of his immigration related plans once he takes office. Biden has vowed to reinstate the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) for children brought to the U.S. by their parents. The former vice president has also said he plans to halt funding for the border wall and reverse the Migrant Protection Protocols, allowing asylum seekers to wait in the United States, instead of Mexico, until their asylum case is heard. During the last presidential debate, Biden also promised a pathway to citizenship during his first 100 days in office. Rios says the passing of that plan would depend on who controls the senate come January. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police are searching for the driver involved in a fatal hit-and-run in Mountain View last month.Police say 81-year-old Ruben Mendez was walking in a crosswalk at the intersection of South 45th St. and Logan Ave. on June 30 just before 7:30 p.m. An unknown, silver-colored vehicle was turning left onto Logan Ave. when it collided with Mendez. The vehicle then headed eastbound in the 4700 block of Logan Ave., police say.The vehicle did not stop to check on Mendez before fleeing the scene, police added.Mendez sustained major injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police identified Tuesday the officer involved in a shooting in Little Italy Saturday.Several witnesses flagged down a patrol car driving at 1300 India Street about 6:45 p.m. to let the officer know about a man who was not wearing a shirt and acting belligerently.The SDPD report indicated Officer Anthony Bueno found the man, Brent Zadina, on the hood of a car, yelling at the driver.RELATED: Officer Bueno has history of conflictsZadina appeared to be drunk or under the influence of drugs, police said.Officer Bueno tried to arrest Zadina but he resisted and the officer used his taser, according to the report. Zadina continued to struggle and the officer feared for his life, said the SDPD.Officer Bueno fired one round but missed Zadina. No one was injured.Additional officers arrived and handcuffed Zadina, who was taken to the hospital for observation.San Diego Police said Zadina remains at the hospital and will be booked into jail when he is released.Officer Bueno is a 19-year veteran of the police force.Anyone with information is asked to call the San Diego Police Department at 619-531-2293. 1148
