EL CAJON (CNS) — A woman was killed by a hit-and-run driver Saturday evening in El Cajon.The crash occurred at the intersection of Dehesa and Sycuan roads about 9:30 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.The details of the collision were not immediately available.The vehicle that hit the woman left the scene before CHP units arrived, the department reported.She died at the scene and her name was withheld pending notification of next of kin, the CHP said.A description of the hit-and-run driver and vehicle were not immediately available. 560

EL PASO, Texas (AP) — As many as 2,000 U.S. inspectors who screen cargo and vehicles at ports of entry along the Mexican border may be reassigned to help handle the surge of Central American families coming across, the Trump administration said Monday.The temporary reassignments, up from the current 750 inspectors, threaten to slow the movement of trucks bringing TVs, medical devices and other goods into the U.S. and cause delays for cross-border commuters who come for work or school.The inspectors are instead being put to work processing migrants, taking their applications for asylum and transporting them to holding centers.Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said the reassignments are necessary to help manage a huge influx of migrants that is straining the system and overflowing border facilities."The crisis at our border is worsening, and DHS will do everything in its power to end it," Nielsen said.The effects of pulling inspectors from ports of entry were on display in El Paso, where thousands of border crossers lined up Monday, waiting about an hour to cross into the U.S. They included vendors, U.S. citizens and students with visas.Sergio Amaya, 24, a student at the University of Texas-El Paso, is an American citizen who lives in Juarez. EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) -- The San Diego County Sheriff's Department is looking for a man who attempted to rob a Burger King, threatening employees with a gun, in El Cajon off of Old Highway 80. Deputies say the man ordered food and when the cashier told him the amount owed, he pulled out the gun and demanded money. The employees ran to the back and the suspect shot his gun at least once before running off, according to deputies.There were no customers inside the restaurant at the time of the shooting and none of the employees were hurt. The suspect was seen taking off westbound on Old Hwy 80 in a dark-colored pick-up truck. He's described as white or Hispanic, 5'8", and about 200 pounds. Anyone with information is asked to call the San Diego Sheriff's Department. 783

(KGTV) — El Cajon Police and the NAACP say they are trying to reach out to the family of a man hit and killed by a car last week after family and friends accused police of shooting the man.Police say the protest stemmed from a Nov. 25 traffic fatality involving Stephen Harris, 29, of El Cajon. Harris was hit by a vehicle just before 9 p.m. in the 300 block of West Chase Ave. and died at the scene, according to police.EPD says the driver who hit Harris remained at the scene and tried to provide first aid to him, along with the help of a passenger in the vehicle. Police do not suspect the driver of driving under the influence or speeding at the time of the crash. Witnesses told police Harris suddenly walked into the roadway at the time of the crash, EPD added.Surveillance footage reportedly showed Harris leaving a nearby convenience store and stumbling before the collision, police said. Officials said a toxicology report is being conducted, but police said preliminary testing showed drugs and alcohol in Harris' system at the time of his death.Family and friends of Harris arrived at the scene after the crash and accused police of being involved in Harris' death, saying officers were stalking him, shot him, and were trying to cover it up. During a protest on Nov. 30, family and friends continued their accusations against the department, with some protesters obstructing traffic.
