INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana — Police have arrested an Indianapolis man on a charge of murder in connection with the death of his friend on the Near Eastside earlier this month.Dewayne Sims, 32, was taken into custody Thursday night on a warrant for charges of murder and being a felon carrying a handgun in connection with the death of 36-year-old Earl Whitney.Whitney was found shot and killed inside a home in the 500 block of North Tacoma Avenue just after 6:30 p.m. on March 8.According to a probable cause affidavit filed Monday, a witness told police that Whitney had brought home his longtime friend, Sims. Both appeared to be possibly intoxicated, according to the witness.At one point in the evening, Whitney reportedly attempted to get Sims to leave. Sims, the witness said, had dozed off. When Whitney tried to rouse him, Sims reportedly said, “Who is you?”Whitney reportedly responded, “It’s me, cuz” – at which point Sims allegedly shot him. According to the witness, Sims shot Whitney once, paused, then shot him two more times. Sims then allegedly fled the residence.An autopsy of Whitney determined he died of a gunshot wound to the torso.According to the affidavit, Sims was on GPS monitoring through Marion County Community Corrections at the time the shooting took place. The device “reported insufficient,” though, meaning that it “did not have a clear view of satellites to report a valid location.”As of Friday evening, Sims was being held without bond at the Marion County Jail. INDIANAPOLIS -- An abused dog that was shot and left for dead has a new lease on life after an Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Officer and his wife, a paramedic with the Wayne Township Fire Department decided to step in and help. Officer Tim Elliott was on patrol when he came across the dog that had been shot in the face and doused in bleach. Wayne Township Fire Department Captain Mike Pruitt says Officer Elliott and his fellow officers rushed in to help and took the pup to the emergency vet to try and save him. "Still alive and wagging his tail, Tim and Tiffany couldn't let this little guy perish at the hands of a savage criminal owner," said Pruitt. Pruitt says the couple fell in love with the pup and decided to save him. The pup, who's been lovingly nicknamed "Winks,"  will need surgery to have his eye removed as well as other medical treatments from the damage his previous owner had done, The Elliott family is raising money to try to help cover those costs which are expected to exceed ,500. "Winks now has a forever home full of love and a "brother" (Gauge) to help him through this," said Captain Pruitt. INDIANAPOLIS — The first officers to respond to a reported stabbing in Indianapolis Sunday night walked into a chaotic scene: shards of broken glass strewn about the floor; a wig that had been forcibly ripped off someone’s head; and blood smeared from one end of an apartment’s hallway to another.Just inside one of the units at the St. George Apartments police found 45-year-old Vickie Jackson collapsed on the floor. She had been stabbed multiple times and was in extremely grave condition. She was pronounced dead 35 minutes later at Methodist Hospital.Surveillance video obtained by investigators shed light on the chaos.According to a probable cause affidavit filed in Marion County court Monday, a camera captured Jackson and another woman, later identified as 35-year-old Tashawanna Wilson, fighting in the hallway.In the video, police say, Wilson can be seen breaking a wine bottle against Jackson. Wilson then allegedly used the top portion of the broken bottle to stab Jackson numerous times.Police broadcast a description of Wilson, and an officer located her a short time later on the campus of the Tindley Genesis Academy at 24th Street and Capitol Avenue. Wilson was reportedly covered in blood and carrying a hatchet, which was also covered in blood.According to police, Wilson admitted to striking Jackson with a wine bottle during a fight and to going to a friend’s house to change clothing afterward.Wilson was taken into custody on a preliminary charge of murder and booked into the Marion County Jail without bond. As of Monday afternoon, prosecutors were still reviewing the case against her for a final charging decision.Court records show Wilson has previously been charged three times with battery in Marion County, most recently in February 2013. She pleaded guilty to resisting law enforcement in that case and was sentenced to time served. 1874
