Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg held a special place in the hearts of many.“The Jewish community mourning her loss, I think it’s universal,” Temple Emanuel's Senior Rabbi Joseph Black said.Rabbi Joseph Black is the senior rabbi at Temple Emanuel in Denver, Colorado. He says the timing of her death was very significant for people of the Jewish faith.“There’s a midrash. There’s a rabbinic saying that if you die just before Rosh Hashanah, which she did. She died the last day of the year. Literally, it means that you’re a very righteous person, that God waited until the very last moment to take you from the world,” Rabbi Black explained.Rabbi Black says Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year. It is recognized as the start of the 10 holiest days of the year when people reflect on their sins and how they can make the world a better place.“Everybody went into this sacred, holy day with a sense of loss," he said.Rabbi Black says RBG and her role in the country’s democracy have been significant to the Jewish community for years.“She was the first Jewish woman Supreme Court Justice," Rabbi Black said. "She was proud of her faith. While she wasn’t a deeply religious person, her Judaism, I do believe, instructed all that she did.”He says justice is an essential part of Judaism.“In Deuteronomy chapter 16, the words in Hebrew 'Tzedek Tzedek Tirdof, or Justice Justice Shall You Pursue' were literally inscribed on Justice Ginsburg’s chambers. She had artwork that said that. And I believe that she embodied that phrase.”Being raised in a Jewish neighborhood with immigrant parents, Rabbi Black says he believes that’s a big reason why she was such a big supporter of minority rights.“She was the voice of the voiceless," Rabbi Black said, "She spoke out for, regardless of who you were -- gender, sexual orientation, religious belief, economic status--she believed strongly in equality and in justice. She argued before she was a Supreme Justice five times on women’s rights issues.”Justice Ginsburg’s impact started way before she took one of the coveted nine spots on the Supreme Court. “She was a member of our Kappa chapter at Cornell University where she actually served as President of the chapter,” said Bonnie Wunsch, executive director of Alpha Epsilon Phi Sorority, the sorority RBG was a part of. Alpha Epsilon Phi was founded by seven Jewish women in 1909 who were unable to join other sororities on their campus. Justice Ginsburg was a part of the sisterhood from the early-to-mid 1950s."We stand for leadership and empowerment and development of women in all areas. And what RBG stood for is exactly the values that all sororities, not just AEPhi, are founded upon."Wunsch says the sorority is proud to call her a sister.“She really made a difference," Wunsch said. "She showed that we could do whatever we wanted to do as women, as mothers, and as Jews in the community.”Both Rabbi Black and Wunsch say they agree Ginsburg taught us the importance of the pursuit of justice, and how to fight for the rights of the oppressed, lessons we can carry on through her legacy.“She represented the best of the best," Rabbi Black said. Starbucks is the latest food chain to add plant-based meat options to its U.S. menus.The Seattle coffee chain said Tuesday they now offer a breakfast sandwich made with imitation sausage from Impossible Foods at a majority of its U.S. locations. The sandwich comes with egg and cheese on a ciabatta bun.Starbucks said earlier this year that it would add plant-based meat to its menus worldwide as part of an effort to reduce its environmental impact. TAMPA, Fla. -- A former Tampa Bay Lightning player is on his way to becoming a sworn firefighter for the city of Tampa.“I think it’s very similar to the teamwork, the bond together, the brotherhood. It keeps you in shape and it’s very important for us to keep people safe and I want to be a hero to my children,” said Nikita Alekseev.Alekseev is a former first-round draft pick for the Lightning. Since then, he’s studied, graduated from the fire academy, has had EMT training and is finishing his final days of recruit training for Tampa Fire Rescue over the next week.“I have a lot of friends in the service here. I’ve been in the stations throughout my career just visiting and I’m a big community guy so I really like to help the people of the city,” he said.On Thursday, he said his focus was on consistency and efficiency.“Obviously, we’re just starting out so I want to get as much info on every little situation where it’s gonna help me to save my life and my crew. It’s very important to listen to what the instructor’s saying,” he said.The city’s new hires ran through engine company operations, practicing with the fire hose, going through a building and putting water on a building.“It doesn’t matter how big you are, how strong you are, you have to have a technique. It’s a lot of water and you can’t win it. So a lot of good instructors showed me how to do the right things, how to position yourself right and so it helps a lot,” Alekseev said.His fellow recruits include newcomers and legacies, everyone starting from the same place no matter their background.“What I hope is they take the training out here, bring it to the street, continue the training to continue gaining experience, knowledge and becoming a well rounded professional firefighter,” said Tampa Fire Rescue Captain Dan Quatrino.Alekseev and 14 others are part of the department’s first recruit class during the pandemic.“It makes a lot of the day to day operations we do unique and new to all of us,” said Quatrino.After finishing their final days of training, they’ll be sworn in next week.“It’s a small step to achievement, I guess. I want to make proud of the instructors, my friends in the service, my family, my kids, so it’s not really about me it’s about who’s behind this,” said Alekseev.Alekseev said his message to others, is to have goals, work towards them and follow-through, no matter your age.“Ultimate goal? The Big Ten Conference announced on Wednesday that they would start its football season, which consists of 10 in-conference games, on Sept. 5.In a news release, the conference released the schedule for the upcoming season, with games slated to end on Nov. 21 to align with academic calendars.Conference officials also set out parameters on the medical protocol as the landscape of the coronavirus pandemic continues to unfold.“Our institutions are committed to taking the necessary measures to facilitate a safe return to campus for our students this fall,” said Morton Schapiro, Chair of the Big Ten Council of Presidents/Chancellors and Northwestern University President in the press release. “Since the beginning of the pandemic, we have prioritized the health and safety of our students. Their welfare is paramount and remains at the forefront of all of our decisions. Today’s announcement, though subject to local, state and federal public health guidelines, provides a path forward for Big Ten student-athletes to return to competition based on comprehensive, conference-wide medical policies and protocols established by the Big Ten Task Force for Emerging Infectious Diseases and the Big Ten Sports Medicine Committee.
