SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An annual reading program by United Way of San Diego County helped nearly 500 students in the City Heights neighborhood improve their literacy skills, the nonprofit announced today.The "Readers in the Heights" summer reading initiative included 479 students from elementary schools in the City Heights area, a sharp increase from the program's 40 participants just two years ago. The program is intended to combat "summer slide," when students lose literacy gains they made during the school year. According to United Way, 86 percent of students assessed at the beginning and end of the program maintained or improved their reading comprehension."We use proven assessment tools to measure impact and they show that these literacy practices have made significant progress in student reading," United Way of San Diego County President and CEO Nancy Sasaki said. "These practices help close learning gaps and open new worlds by creating happy, excited and confident readers."United Way partnered with the San Diego Unified School District, the San Diego Public Library, the San Diego Police Department, PrimeTime SAY San Diego and Words Alive to produce the program.Members of the literacy group Words Alive trained members of the program's staff on how to implement evidence-based reading practices across the program's seven sites, including four elementary schools in and around City Heights. The students totaled nearly 10,000 hours of literacy learning during the 20-day program and received a total of 900 free books."Research shows that children who don't have access to books, camps or enrichment programs during the summer recess can lose more than two months of reading skills and can fall behind almost three months in their learning," said San Diego Unified School District Superintendent Cindy Marten. "Each year, the Readers in the Heights literacy initiative works to increase summer learning opportunities, and with the help of partners and volunteers, we are able to make a huge impact over four weeks. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities Tuesday publicly identified a 71-year-old man who was killed in a collision at a Rancho Bernardo intersection.John Atcheson of San Diego was turning from Meandro Drive onto Rancho Bernardo Road when an eastbound 2001 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck crashed into his 2018 Chevrolet Volt shortly before 6:30 p.m. Monday, according the county Medical Examiner's Office.Medics took Atcheson to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido, where he was pronounced dead.The other motorist, a 23-year-old woman, was hospitalized for treatment of broken bones, police said. 590

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A person at Morse High School was recently diagnosed with tuberculosis and may have exposed students and staff, the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency announced Tuesday.HHSA is working with the San Diego Unified School District to notify those who were potentially exposed and provide TB testing. The dates of exposure are from Feb. 28 to March 13 of this year.Morse High School, in the Skyline area of San Diego, is currently participating in social distancing protocols due to COVID-19 and onsite TB screening will not be available.According to the HHSA, students who were identified as being potentially exposed to TB can get tested with their primary care provider. Students who do not have a medical provider should contact the county's TB Control Program at 619-692-8621 to arrange to arrange an appointment for a free test.School teachers and staff will be provided testing by the San Diego Unified School District.The disease is transmitted from person to person through indoor air during prolonged contact with an infectious person. Most people who are exposed to TB do not become infected."Testing is recommended for all those exposed to make sure they are not infected, since initial infection usually has no symptoms," said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. "If a person is infected, early diagnosis and prompt treatment can prevent the infectious form of the disease."Symptoms of infectious TB include persistent cough, fever, night sweats and unexplained weight loss. People infected with the disease, or who are immunocompromised, may not show symptoms. It can be cured with antibiotics.Tuberculosis is not uncommon in the region but has been decreasing since the early 1990s and has stabilized in recent years.In 2013, a total of 206 cases were reported in the county, the lowest number since local TB cases peaked at 469 in 1993. There were 237 cases reported in 2017 and 226 in 2018. Last year, 265 residents were diagnosed with TB. But Bliss did not dispute Reuters' finding that the company settled a lawsuit over mold at Camp Pendleton and is fighting another mold suit filed by a family that resided in Naval base housing in San Diego."Contrary to what the story would lead a reader to believe, we do not profit by skimping on service," Bliss said in a company-issued statement. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - In-state University of California students got a financial reprieve Thursday, with the system opting to forego a vote on a proposed tuition hike in favor of pushing the state for more funding."Raising tuition is always a last resort and one we take very seriously," UC President Janet Napolitano said. "We will continue to advocatewith our students, who are doing a tremendous job of educating legislators about the necessity of adequately funding the university to ensure UC remains a world-class institution and engine of economic growth for our state."The Board of Regents had been expected to consider a 2.7 percent boost in base tuition. While that vote will no longer happen, the regents could revisit the issue "depending on the outcome of budget negotiations in Sacramento."UC officials said they will look to secure an additional 0 million in state funding above what was already proposed for the coming year in the governor's budget proposal.The announcement echoed a decision announced last week by California State University Chancellor Timothy White, who said the CSU would also focus on lobbying the state for additional funds rather than pursuing a tuition hike."In light of California's strong economy, California's students and their families should not be saddled with additional financial burden to attain public higher education," White said.
