Before 36-year-old James Eberling died in November 2016, he told his parents he had one final wish:He wanted his remains to be sent into space.Now Eberling's dream is about to be realized, as his and about 100 others' cremated remains were launched into space Monday in a memorial satellite by the company Elysium Space.The San Francisco-based company said families paid about ,500 to have a sample of their loved ones' ashes placed aboard the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.Traveling into space will be the remains of military veterans and aerospace enthusiasts, alongside those whose families were "looking to celebrate a loved one within the poetry of the starry sky," Elysium Space said in an emailed statement.James' ashes and the others were packed into a 4-inch square satellite called a cubesat, Elysium Space Founder and CEO Thomas Civeit said. Families will be able to track the spacecraft in real-time through an app as it orbits the earth for about four years before it falls back to Earth, according to Civeit.The launch is part of a "rideshare mission" organized by Spaceflight. The company said it purchased the rocket to accommodate clients, which range from schools to commercial businesses to government entities and international organizations. BETHEL, Ohio — Love is in the air at a small local farm that focuses on selling quail eggs and other tasty farm creations like their bourbon-based caramel.Woodbottom Quail Farms even has a saying: "Loving the Farm and Farming the Love.""Maybe be able to give someone something they might not have been able to have as nice otherwise," said farm co-owner Tom Segrist.Segrist is an Army veteran, having served as a Scout from 1986 to 1990.He and his wife, who goes by "M," both decided early in 2020 to offer up something special."I posted on Facebook, and then it was just announced that we're doing the weddings, you know, it's all-inclusive, everything's free," M Segrist said.She said the response was incredible, with well over 100 couples writing their love story and submitting their application. The main qualifying point to receive the free, all-inclusive wedding inside their quaint farm barn: one person in the couple must be a military veteran."We collected new and gently used wedding dresses," M Segrist said. "There's a consignment shop offering bridesmaids dresses. There's full salon, mani-pedi, facials, seamstress, floral photography for engagement and the ceremony. There's tons of gifts."Those gifts have come from veteran-based businesses across the United States who wanted to make the six couples' big days even more special. Some wedding gifts came from as far away as Alaska and Hawaii.M Segrist said it was a challenge to whittle the stack of applicants down, but they chose each of the couples for specific reasons. She explains the reason for one of their choices."Jessica and David. They both have been married, they have kids, and then they come together later in life. And they're a very happy couple. It's like you can just look at them and see the love between them," she said.David Neiheisel was an Army Combat Engineer and surprised his girlfriend, Jessica Rieck, with the engagement ring last Thanksgiving. He had his daughter do the honor."I had my youngest, Sadie, actually hand her the ring," Neiheisel said. "She said, 'Here, Daddy got you something.'"Rieck said it was the last thing she expected."Well, my initial reaction was, I said, 'You put that back and go, go over there. I am not looking at that,'" Rieck said. "I looked at him, I said, 'I have to sit down for a minute.'"She eventually realized the next step for their blended families meant walking down the aisle again.After M posted about the free weddings for veterans, Jessica and David had several people give them a heads-up about the contest. After a couple of days they compiled their story and submitted it. Once they were contacted and told they were chosen as one of the couples, Jessica didn't believe it."We are those people that you never win anything, you never get picked," Rieck said. "And when we got notified — oh, this is real."M Segrist plans to officiate a number of the ceremonies herself.For Tom Segrist, it's a chance to help share what they have with others."Even if I'm not a part of their memory, they have the memory. Black Lives Matter activists are holding their first Black National Convention Friday, a virtual event that will adopt a political agenda calling for slavery reparations, universal basic income, environmental justice and legislation that entirely re-imagines criminal justice reform.The gathering follows Democratic and Republican party conventions that laid out starkly different visions for America. It also comes on the heels of yet another shooting by a white police officer of a Black man — 29-year-old Jacob Blake — in Kenosha, Wisconsin, that sparked days of protests, unrest and violence.And it comes on the same day as a commemoration of the 1963 March on Washington, where the families of an ever-growing list of police and vigilante violence victims will appear with civil rights leaders.Friday’s live-stream broadcast will include policy proposals on such issues as voter suppression, reproductive rights, inequality in public education, housing insecurity and inter-communal violence, according to its agenda, shared exclusively with The Associated Press.“These are absolutely public policies that the Democratic Party, state and local officials, or anyone who is looking to serve Black people can take up now,” said Jessica Byrd, who leads the Electoral Justice Project of the Movement for Black Lives, a coalition of more than 150 Black groups organizing the event.In 2016, the coalition released its “Vision for Black Lives” policy platform which included early proposals for defunding police. The new agenda revamps much of that original platform with specific proposals that could lead to an eventual abolition of the criminal justice system as it exists today.It takes on the pledge Wednesday by Vice President Mike Pence at the Republican National Convention, who defended police and called for an end to unrest in cities where arson, looting and violence have followed peaceful protests over police brutality.“Under President Trump, we will always stand with those who stand on the thin blue line,” Pence declared. “And we’re not going to defund the police. BALTIMORE, Md. — A mom walks into a bar. There is no punch line. Just a punch in the gut. A mom sold her baby, Marion Louise Smith, for cash and her older daughter for a car 51 years ago at a bar that use to be called Ken Tins. It sat right on the corner of Chester and Fairmount in Butchers Hill in Baltimore.Kenneth Suggs was asked if he wanted the baby for cash. Shocked and concerned for the child, Suggs used his whole paycheck to take Smith.Suggs, an electrician, and his IHOP waitress wife Gail took in Smith and raised her. Smith now lives with her family in Middle River, Maryland.But when her father died, his wish for Smith was to find her sister.  And that's what she's doing. 761
