SWANTON, Ohio - An Ohio father's message about bullying has gone viral. Matt Cox's daughter was suspended from riding the school bus on Nov. 30 due to bullying. Cox said his daughter told him that he had to drive her to school the following week, but he decided to teach her lesson instead. "I realized she viewed the privilege of riding the bus and or car rides to and from school as a right and not a privilege," Cox said. On Monday, Cox made his daughter walk to school and posted a video on Facebook saying, "Life lessons."In the video, Cox said a lot of children today feel that the things their parents do for them are a right and not a privilege. Cox said his daughter was upset when she first started walking on Monday.During the walk, Cox talked to his daughter about how her actions were the reason she was walking. He said by the end of the walk she calmed down and realized that if she hadn't bullied others she would still be on the bus. The video has been shared more than 200,000 times. Cox said he was shocked when he found out the video went viral. "I was in complete shock that so many people responded when I originally posted it. I just thought friends and family would see it, and then a friend asked me to make it public so that they could share it," Cox said. "By the time I woke up the next day I had hundreds of messages in my inbox and saw that there were quite a few views."Cox said he sat down with his children to show them the comments on the video so that they could understand the effects of bullying. "She, along with my other two children, seem to show a great deal of empathy towards some of the sad stories that I read with them," Cox said. He believes his daughter learned her lesson about bullying and will now appreciate the bus ride to school.Cox hopes that when others view the video, they will learn just how much words can hurt others. "I just hope that through the video being shared kids can take a look and read some of the comments and tutorials on the post and see just how much words can hurt and cut deep and can have lasting effects on those involved sometimes in the most awful cases life-ending effects," Cox said. "I also hope that parents see the video and start holding their kids accountable for their actions and stop sweeping their child's actions under the rug with the ideology that kids will be kids. We as parents need to stop the bullying on the home front because bullying only breeds bullying," Cox said. 2579

Stores across the country are starting to advertise and display back-to-school sales. From electronics to clothes, the National Retail Federation is tracking buying trends as the new school year approaches."Parents may not know how their children are attending classes, whether it’s in-person or online, a mix, and that is certainly reflected in how people are shopping right now. So, when we did our study in early July most consumers did not know what they needed to buy yet," said Katherine Cullen, the Senior Director for Industry and Consumer Insights at the National Retail Federation. She says there's a lot of uncertainty surrounding the upcoming school year and most consumers are hesitant to buy back to school supplies right now, but many already have plans to spend more."For grade school and high school shoppers it is over 0 on average which is about 0 more than last year. So, some of that is definitely being driven by this current environment and it's shaping how people are planning to buy right now," said Cullen. Cullen says consumers will likely spend more than last year on school supplies and just as much on new clothes. She said there are some things kids need no matter where they learn. "Kids keep growing even if they're not going to school in person, they will likely still need some new items."But the big ticket items families will be spending money on is electronics. "We are certainly seeing that many families, over half, are expecting there will be at least some online learning component and as a result they're planning to make some extra purchases around that: laptops, computers, head phones and speakers are a big component of that," said Cullen.The National Retail Federation says grade school and high school shoppers plan to spend more on average on electronics. Amy Cunningham, a parent in South Carolina, says her family decided to purchase two laptops to help their children with online remote learning this fall. This past spring, the children shared their parents' computers. "Having to juggle the kids’ distance learning with what we were doing was hard so we knew if we were going to do it this year, which was our plan, that we were going to need to get additional laptops," said Cunningham. Cunningham says she likely won't need many other school supplies and doesn't anticipate needing to buy new clothes for the school year."I’d probably get notebooks and stuff like that just because we don’t have a lot of that sitting around. Clothes, no. They live in their play clothes at home now so there’s no point really," says Cunningham.As for how parents will be back-to-school shopping this year, for many, gone are the days of traditional in-store browsing. The American Automobile Association (AAA) expects at least 34 million less people will travel this holiday season than last year due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.Public health concerns and travel guidance are influencing decisions not to travel during a time when people often take vacations. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is urging Americans not to go anywhere for the holidays this year, warning that it could increase your chance of getting and spreading COVID-19.Still, AAA projects as many as 84.5 million Americans may travel from Dec. 23 through Jan. 3, a decline of at least 29%.As for methods of travel, AAA says most Americans who do go somewhere in the next few weeks will do so by car, with road trips accounting for 96% of holiday travel. Up to 81 million Americans will travel by car, a decline of at least 25% compared to last year, according to AAA.As has been the trend this year, far less people will fly this holiday season. AAA says as many as 2.9 million travelers are expected to book flights for the holidays, a decline of nearly 60% from 2019.For those who do choose to travel despite the risks, it’s important to take steps that can help keep yourself and others safe.AAA says to plan ahead by checking with state and local officials along your route and at your destination to learn about local guidance and any restrictions in place. That includes what’s expected of you when you return home. Many places require COVID-19 testing prior to and after travel.The CDC recommends taking a COVID-19 test one to three days before travel and another three to five days after travel, in addition to reducing nonessential activities for seven days after traveling.When packing, make sure you include face masks, disinfecting wipes, hand sanitizer and a thermometer. It might also be a good idea to pack water and extra snacks to reduce the need to stop along your trip.If you’re staying at a hotel, AAA recommends calling ahead to ensure it’s open and to ask what precautions are being taken to protect guests.
