LONDON, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang met with British Business Secretary Vince Cable here on Wednesday, with both sides agreeing to further develop economic and trade ties.China and Britain are both major economies in the world, so bilateral trade has a solid foundation and broad prospects, said Li, adding that the two sides should establish a more strategic and long-term economic and trade relationship, and jointly promote economic growth. He said the two countries should further expand mutual investment, deepen cooperation in infrastructure construction, advanced manufacturing and service trade, energy development, innovative technology and other areas, and jointly develop the third-party markets. The Chinese leader welcomed British companies to continue to invest in China, and said China would also encourage more Chinese enterprises to invest and seek development in Britain. He pledged that China will continue to improve its investment environment and provide convenience for British enterprises, while also expressing the hope that Britain can do the same for Chinese investors. In his turn, Cable said the British government and business community have been committed to developing closer economic and trade ties with China, adding that the two countries have complementary advantages and therefore great potential for broader and deeper cooperation.British entrepreneurs present at the meeting briefed Li about their investment and operations in China.Li, accompanied by Cable, also visited on Wednesday the BRE Innovation Park and an exhibition of the latest research development and achievements in the field of low-carbon architecture and community.

BEIJING, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) - China's urbanization would boost domestic demand by 30 trillion yuan (4.5 trillion U.S. dollars) by 2030, an official from a top think tank said Saturday. The country's urbanization expansion promises a huge potential in domestic demand, which will assure a stable economic development for China even if exports decline, Han Jun, vice director with the State Council's Development Research Center (SCDRC), said at a forum, adding that the urban migrants' demand for housing is likely to become the largest driving force for China's economic growth in the future.Additionally, Han noted that the core issue in China's urbanization is to allow farmers-turned-migrant workers to become permanent urban residents. In the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee's Proposal for Formulating the 12th Five-Year Program for China's Economic and Social Development (2011-2015), which was issued last month, authorities stressed that accelerating urbanization would be an important mission during the next five years.Data from the SCDRC indicates that China's urbanization rate hit 46 percent by the end of 2009, and will reach 63.6 percent by 2030, with the urban population standing at 930 million.

BEIJING, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang Friday called for improving the management and supervision of China's state-owned assets and promoting the development of state-owned enterprises (SOEs), to preserve and increase the value of state property.Chinese state assets management and supervision authorities should work to improve monitoring systems and boost the scientific development of state-owned economies, as Chinese SOEs will face the "pressing task" of reform and development over the next five years, Zhang told a national conference on state assets supervision and management.Chinese SOEs progressed rapidly in the previous five years, he said, adding that state-owned economies play an important role in the development of the Chinese economy.Zhang urged state assets management and supervision authorities to further improve the organizational and legal systems, accelerate the reform of SOEs, and transform the development pattern of SOEs, which are responsible for taking the lead in China's scientific innovation and making contributions to the nation's development.

VIENNA, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) -- China remained open to initiatives on the establishment of an international nuclear fuel bank , a senior Chinese diplomat said here Friday. "The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA should play an active role in establishing such mechanism, on the prerequisite of maintaining its independence, " said Hu Xiaodi, China's permanent representative and ambassador to the United Nations and other international organizations in Vienna. "China is of the view that the establishment and operation of multilateral mechanism on assurance of nuclear fuel supply involves complex political, economic, technical and legal factors as well as practical interests of all Member States, " Hu told a board meeting of IAEA. Referring to an U.S. proposal on the establishment of an IAEA low-enrichment uranium bank, Hu noted that some IAEA Member States still had concerns on that proposal. "The concerns of relevant states should be taken into full consideration and resolved in order to seek the most extensive support," Hu said. He also said that while the objective of preventing the proliferation of nuclear weapons should be promoted, Member States ' right to peaceful uses of nuclear energy should not be affected. There have been a number of initiatives to establish nuclear fuel reserve banks in recent years. The U.S. proposal envisions a nuclear fuel bank run by IAEA, to which countries could turn to if their regular supplies were cut. However, the plan has met opposition from some developing countries. They worry that a nuclear fuel bank could undermine their right to acquire their own nuclear technology for peaceful purposes. Some countries are also concerned with the possibility of fuel supply being controlled by western powers and used for political purposes.
