There's been an increase in sales of bullet-resistant backpacks for children, in the wake of the mass shootings in El Paso and Dayton last weekend.American companies selling the items say they're catering to heightened demand from parents during the back-to-school shopping season. But critics argue they are using tragedy as a marketing opportunity and exploiting parents' worst fears.Safety is high on the minds of many parents, especially after the El Paso and Dayton, Ohio shootings that left 31 people dead."We've definitely seen a spike over the past week or so in sales and that could be attributed to back to school but it could be attributed to some of the national events that are happening as well, "said Yasir Sheikh, founder and president of Skyline USA.His company makes Guard Dog Security products like pepper spray and stun gun,s and started offering bullet-resistant backpacks called ProShield Scout for children last year.Steve Naremore founded Houston-based TuffyPacks in late 2015 after his daughter, a fourth-grade teacher, told him about the frequency of active shooting drills for her students. His company produces some bullet-resistant backpacks but the bulk of his business is in removable ballistic shields that are inserted in backpacks.Naremore says his backpacks could be the difference between suffering "lethal versus non lethal" injuries."Some (parents) say to me 'I can't believe the world has come to this I have to send my child to school with a bulletproof backpack'. The other half say it's something that is probably necessary," he comments.TuffyPacks markets its products on its website with mass shootings in mind. And its backpacks don't come cheap. TuffyPacks' shields range in price from 9 to 9. Skyline's ProShield Scout backpacks are priced at 9, although it's less than the adult version that tops at 9.Some also cast doubt on the backpacks' safety and how much they can really protect children. Both Guard Dog Security and TuffyPacks claim their products are tested in independent labs in line with the standards for the National Institute of Justice and meet the requirements for a Level IIIA rating. That means the shields can thwart a 9-millimeter handgun and a .44 magnum. Naremour says it's like wearing a police vest. But the National Institute of Justice — the research, development and evaluation arm of the Department of Justice that comes up with the rating — has itself never conducted tests on these products or certified them and therefore cannot vouch for them.Educational experts say bullet-resistant backpacks are not the solution.Still, the makers of bullet-resistant backpacks have tapped into a fear that is real. And for parents feeling helpless and looking for an answer, the backpacks provide them with one.Marisol Rodriguez of Milwaukee said she is considering buying one for her 13-year-old son."It shouldn't have to come to the selling bulletproof backpacks," she said. "That just goes to show what type of society we live in today." 3026

The statistics around maternal mortality in the United States are startling. America has the highest maternal mortality rate out of any developed country in the world. Today, a woman in the U.S. is 50 percent more likely to die from giving birth to a child than her mother was, and if you are a woman of color you are 3 to 4 times more likely than that.At Rush University Hospital in Chicago, neonatal intensive care nurse and educator Christie Lawrence has dealt with maternal mortality both professionally and personally. “My cousin, Chante, she was a young healthy mother, 18 years old,” Lawrence says. “Actually, she had no risk factors that we knew of.” Ten years ago, Lawrence was at work when her cousin went into labor at another hospital. “I received a call to say, ‘Chante is in labor, we are going to have a baby today.’ Then, a couple of hours later, a turn of events,” she recalls. “Her mom is screaming, ‘I need you to get here quick! Something has gone terribly wrong.’” The healthy 18-year-old mom suddenly went into cardiac arrest while giving birth to her son, and she died. “It was very shocking, very shocking for my family to see that whole turn of events,” said Lawrence. “We were expecting everything to be normal.”Her cousin’s death was caused by medication that was administered to her the wrong way. When Chante went in labor, she was a first-time mom and had no access to transportation to the hospital, so an ambulance was called. The ambulance took her to a hospital that was different than the one she had been going to for care during her pregnancy. Lawrence believes that may have played into the quality of care her cousin received, and ultimately, the mistake that was made at the hospital. It all led to the death of Lawrence’s cousin, which she says was fully preventable. Unfortunately, Chante’s case isn’t unique. These kinds of mistakes are happening at an alarming rate across the country. According to a Center for Disease Control report published this year, 60 percent of all pregnancy-related deaths in this country are fully preventable. Hospitals and healthcare providers around the country are working to implement new procedures to reduce the maternal mortality rate. At Rush University, for example, it’s trying a new program that checks up on babies and new moms just three weeks after leaving the hospital. Typically, in the past, doctors recommended a three-week check-up that focused on the newborn. But with this new program called Rush Family Connect, a nurse will go to the parent’s home and give equal attention to mom. The hope is that any post-pregnancy complication can be caught early, since the top causes of maternal mortality are actually post-delivery complications. Additionally, this year, the Joint Commission has issued a new mandate and standard. By July 1, 2020, all hospitals must have life-saving medications immediately available and must plan rapid release of blood supplies for transfusions. Doctors and nurses at hospital maternity units must have training drills responding to a hemorrhage crisis, which is one of the top cases for fatal deliveries. While hospitals and healthcare providers work to reduce the dangers mothers are facing, Lawrence believes mother have some power over their outcomes. “Just being a great advocate for yourself is one of the biggest things that I would tell any new mom,” said Lawrence. “If you feel like something is not right, if you feel like something is wrong, make people listen to you. And if you feel like that person won’t listen to you, then you have to go up the chain of command in that system or you have to find someone who is willing to listen.”It’s advice Lawrence wishes she could go back in time and tell her cousin. 3754

The woman stripped of her Miss Michigan 2019 tiara for tweets that the pageant's organizers found offensive said Monday she stands by everything she says on social media, despite having apparently deleted one of the posts in question.Kathy Zhu, a University of Michigan student and vice president of the school's College Republicans, had her crown taken the day after it was placed on her head last week."They stripped me of my Miss Michigan title due to my refusal to try on a hijab in 2018, my tweet about black on black gun violence, and 'insensitive' statistical tweets," she tweeted Thursday. In her response to Miss World America officials, 658

The White House has flatly rejected the House Judiciary Committee's request for documents in its sweeping investigation into possible obstruction of justice and abuses of power, accusing the Democratically-controlled committee of seeking to recreate the special counsel investigation to harass the President.White House Counsel Pat Cipollone sent a letter Wednesday to House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler arguing that the committee's request for documents was illegitimate."It appears that the Committee's inquiry is designed, not to further a legitimate legislative purpose, but rather to conduct a pseudo law enforcement investigation on matters that were already the subject of the Special Counsel's long-running investigation and are outside the constitutional authority of the legislative branch," Cipollone wrote."Congressional investigations are intended to obtain information to aid in evaluating potential legislation, not to harass political opponents or to pursue an unauthorized 'do-over' of exhaustive law enforcement investigations conducted by the Department of Justice," he added. The letter adds yet another layer to the escalating feud between the White House and House Democrats over their numerous investigations into the Trump administration and President Donald Trump's businesses and finances.Trump has already declared that his administration will fight all of the House subpoenas — several of which are now being fought in court. The Judiciary Committee voted last week to hold Attorney General William Barr in contempt for not providing the full Mueller report and evidence and the Ways and Means Committee has issued a subpoena for Trump's personal and business tax returns.Nadler and other House Democratic leaders are now raising the prospect they will hold numerous administration officials in contempt at the same time as part of a package to highlight the Trump administration's stonewalling of Congress. Some Democrats are also talking about invoking Congress' so-called inherent contempt powers to fine or jail those who defy congressional subpoenas.Cipollone's letter, which was first 2133

The United Autoworkers Union has reached a tentative agreement with Ford. This comes after almost two weeks since the UAW reached a tentative agreement with General Motors that was ratified by the rank and file last week. The financial terms of that are used as a pattern by the union to get similar terms from Ford and Fiat Chrysler. Ford has 55,000 hourly workers in the US, more than the 46,000 who went on strike against GM for 40 days. There was no work stoppage at Ford.Big issues in talks with GM were terms for lower-paid workers who were in-progression or temporary workers. Similar to GM, Ford says 34% of its workforce is in-progression and 6% is temporary. The terms of this Ford agreement are not yet known. Here’s the official word from the UAW:The UAW Ford National Negotiators, UAW President Gary Jones along with UAW Vice President Rory Gamble, Director of the Ford Department, have announced that they have reached a proposed tentative agreement.“Our national negotiators elected by their local unions have voted unanimously to recommend to the UAW-Ford National Council the proposed tentative agreement,” Gamble said. “Our negotiating team worked diligently during the General Motors strike to maintain productive negotiations with Ford. The pattern bargaining strategy has been a very effective approach for UAW and its members to secure economic gains around salary, benefits and secured over billion in major product investments in American facilities, creating and retaining over 8,500 jobs for our communities.”“Out of respect for our members, we will refrain from commenting or releasing full details of the agreement until the UAW-Ford Council leaders meet and review the details,” Gamble added.Ford also released this statement: "Ford can confirm the UAW’s announcement that the UAW and Ford have reached a proposed tentative agreement on a four-year contract. Further details will be provided at a later date."UAW President Gary Jones thanked the national negotiators for their hard work. “Vice President Gamble, his staff and the Ford negotiating team have worked tirelessly to reach an agreement that preserves job security and rewards UAW Ford members for their quality work,” said Jones. “These were long and hard hours, but I feel confident they were able to secure a contract that protects our member’s future.”The UAW-Ford National Council will meet to go over details of the proposed Tentative Agreement. If adopted as a Tentative Agreement, it will go to all Ford hourly and salary members for a ratification vote. 2565
