In the 2020 general election, President-elect Joe Biden beat out a number of formidable candidates to earn the highest office in the land, including President Donald Trump, Libertarian nominee Jo Jorgensen and Santa Claus.Yes, even ol' Kris Kringle received at least one vote for president in 2020, according to the Vermont Secretary of State's website.Every state has its own rules for conducting write-in candidates. In fact, according to Ballotpedia, most states will only accept votes for certain pre-approved write-in candidates.Ballotpedia reports that only eight states — Alabama, Delaware, Iowa, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Oregon, Vermont, and Wyoming — will count the write-in votes for any write-in candidate. And of those states, it appears only Vermont publishes the name of every write-in candidate on its election results webpage.Write-in candidates received 1,942 votes for president in Vermont in the 2020 presidential election. That's compared to the 242,820 that Biden received in carrying the state. It's also more than the 1,269 that independent candidate Kanye West received, despite being listed on the ballot.Among write-in candidates, Sen. Bernie Sanders received the most with 619. That's not exactly a surprise — the left-wing, progressive senator calls the state home and is currently in the midst of his third term as one of the state's senators.Other top vote-getters included moderate Republicans like Sen. Mitt Romney (57 votes) and former Ohio Gov. John Kasich (30 votes). Candidates who sought the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination, like Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (78 votes), Andrew Yang (42 votes) and Pete Buttigieg (24 votes) were also among the top vote-getters among write-ins.Notably, 37 Vermonters thought Vice President Mike Pence should get a promotion to the Oval Office.Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's top infectious disease expert, also received a handful of votes. When totaling up various iterations of his name (Dr. Anthony Fauci, Dr. Fauci, Tony Fauci, etc.), he received 13 write-in votes. Then, there were the celebrities. TV hosts Oprah Winfrey (6 votes) and Mike Rowe (5 votes) racked up multiple write-ins. Jennifer Lopez received a vote, as did LeBron James and Dwayne Johnson. There was even a write-in for a ticket of Tyra Banks and "John Teffer" — though that voter may have misspelled the name of Jon Taffer, the host of reality TV series "Bar Rescue."Write-in votes also dipped into the fantastical and absurd. In addition to "Santa Claus," "Walter White," "Michael Scott" and "Tord Sandwich" all received a vote. Finally, it wouldn't be Vermont without at least one vote for "Cheddar."See the full list of people who received a write-in vote by clicking here. 2725

Interim security clearances for White House aides, including Jared Kushner, were downgraded last week after chief of staff John Kelly stipulated new changes to how officials access the nation's secrets, according to sources familiar with the matter.Aides who previously operated on "top secret" interim clearances saw their access changed to "secret," a classification for less sensitive material. In a February 16 memo, Kelly stated that White House officials who have been operating on interim clearances since last June would have their temporary clearances discontinued. That included Kushner, the President's son-in-law and senior adviser. Asked on Friday whether he would grant Kushner an exemption from the new mandate, Trump said it would be Kelly's decision. The White House has refused to detail the status of Kushner's clearance.Kushner is accepting the decision about his security clearance and "will not ask for special permission" from the President, one person familiar with situation says.Politico first reported the security clearance downgrade."He is a valued member of the team and will continue to do the important work he has been doing since he started in the administration," press secretary Sarah Sanders said on Tuesday. After the memo's release, White House officials worked to identify a way for Kushner to continue working on his portfolio of issues -- including on the Middle East and China -- that would avoid forcing Trump to personally intervene.Officials have expressed worry that Trump's personal involvement could create problems within the West Wing and with Kelly.The-CNN-Wire? & ? 2018 Cable News Network, Inc., a Time Warner Company. Issues of race relations has become a major campaign issue in this year’s presidential election, with the issue getting pushed to the forefront following the Memorial Day death of George Floyd while in Minneapolis police custody.During Thursday’s presidential debate, President Donald Trump declared himself the “least racist person in this room” after he decried the Black Lives Matter movement.“The first time I ever heard of Black Lives Matter, they were chanting ‘pigs in a blanket,’ talking about police,” Trump said. “‘Pigs in a blanket, fry them like bacon.’ I said that is a horrible thing. And they were marching down the street. And that was my first glimpse of the black lives matter. I thought it was a terrible thing.“As far as my relationships with all people, I think I have great relationships with all people. I am the least racist person in this room.”Both Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden had a spirited exchange about Biden’s record on race relations. Trump confronted Biden for his support of the Crime Bill in the 1990s while a US Senator.“I said not since Abraham Lincoln has anybody done what I've done for the Black community,” Trump said. “You have done nothing other than the crime bill which put tens of thousands of black men, mostly, in jail.”While there are sections of the bill Biden continues to back, including an assault weapons ban and the Violence Against Women Act, Biden has shied away from backing mandatory minimum sentences for drug crimes.“It was a mistake,” Biden said. “I've been trying to change particularly the portion on cocaine. That is why I've been arguing that we should not send anyone to jail for a pure drug offense. They should be going into treatment.”During the discussion on race, Biden attempted to make a personal appeal to Black voters.“I never had to tell my daughter, if she's pulled over, make sure she puts both hands on top of the wheel and don't reach for the glove box, because someone may shoot you,” Biden said. “But a Black parent, no matter how wealthy or how poor they are, has to teach their child, when you are walking down the street, don't have a hood on, make sure that if you get pulled over, yes sir, no sir, hands on top of the wheel, because you are the victim whether you are a person making 0,000 a year or someone who is on food stamps. The fact of the matter is, there is institutional racism in America.”While Trump has previously said that he does not believe there is institutional racism in America, he said that no one has done more for Black Americans in recent history.“Nobody has done more for the Black community than Donald Trump,” he said. “If you look, with the exception of Abraham Lincoln, possible exception, nobody has done what I've done. Criminal justice reform, Obama and Joe didn't do it. I don't even think they tried. They might have wanted to do it, but if you had to see the arms I had to twist to get that done, it was not a pretty picture, and everybody knows it, including some very liberal people that cried in my office -- two weeks later they are out saying, we have to defeat him.” 3120

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Food and Safety Inspection Service has issued a public health alert for salad and wrap products that were produced by an Indianapolis company because they may be contaminated with Cyclospora. The recall is for beef, pork and poultry salad and wrap products that were distributed by Caito Foods LLC. The products were produced between July 15 and July 18 and were sold at a number of popular retail locations including Kroger, Trader Joe's and Walgreens. All affected products have a "Best By," "Enjoy By," "Best if Sold By," or "Sell By" date ranging from July 18 through July 23. Product labels, UPC codes and other information can be found HERE. The FSIS says they are concerned that the products may still be in consumers' refrigerators and that consumers may be at risk due to the length of the Cyclospora incubation period. Cyclospora is an intestinal illness by a microscopic parasite that is transmitted contaminated food or water, according to the CDC. It can take up to a week before someone who becomes infected shows any signs or symptoms of the illness, which infects the small intestine and usually causes watery diarrhea with frequent, sometimes explosive bowl movements. Other common symptoms include: 1284
