HEFEI, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- China's top 500 enterprises reported smaller revenue gaps with their U.S. counterparts, while outperforming their worldwide competitors in profitability amid the nation's rapid economic recovery, an industrial ranking report showed Saturday.China's top 500 enterprises chalked up 4.05 trillion U.S. dollars in operating revenues last year, equivalent to about 18 percent of the operating revenue total created by the world's top 500 companies in the same year, and the ratio was 2.62 percentage points lower than the figure recorded for the year earlier, according to a report released Saturday in Hefei, capital of east China's Anhui Province, by the China Enterprise Confederation (CEC) and China Enterprise Directors Association.The average profit margin of China's top 500 enterprises was 5.44 percent in 2009, compared with 4.16 percent for the world's top 500 companies.Further, the net profits of the Chinese heavyweights grew by more than 20 percent last year, faster than the 17 percent for the world's top 500. It was the second consecutive year that Chinese enterprises outshone theirforeign counterparts in annual profits.Miao Rong, researcher with CEC, said despite the progress, China's top 500 enterprises obviously suffered from the impact of the global financial crisis as they reported slower growth in new employment and business revenues.However, unlike the world's top 500 companies, most of which are service and high tech giants, a lion's share of China's top 500 businesses are traditional industrial enterprises in the fields of energy development, telecommunications and power generation, Miao noted."It is a tough job, in the short-term, to make Chinese corporations catch up with their foreign counterparts in terms of 'soft power' , such as the capability of resource integration, management expertise, brand building and intellectual property protection," he added.Sinopec, Asia's leading refinery, topped the top 500 revenue list for the fifth consecutive year with 1.39 trillion yuan (about 204.41 billion U.S. dollars) in 2009. It was followed by the State Grid and PetroChina.Also, private businesses were growing rapidly as five companies reported operating revenues exceeding 100 billion yuan. Huawei Technology Co Ltd, a telecommunication equipment producer, recently leaped into the world's top 500 enterprises club.

BEIJING, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- China will launch a new round of reform to realize a good governance as the ruling Communist Party of China (CPC) is planning the country's roadmap in the coming five years, scholars and political observers have said.The 17th CPC Central Committee opened its fifth plenary session in Beijing Friday to discuss the 12th five-year program (2011-2015), which will unveil a new round of comprehensive reform, including both economic and political reforms, said Yu Keping, a prominent theorist, in an interview with Xinhua."Only with constant reforms and innovations can China build a good government for good governance," said Yu, who now serves as deputy director of the CPC Central Compilation and Translation Bureau.Yu is well versed in the research of political system. His famous works including the article Democracy Is A Good Thing, which has been widely circulated and sparked heated discussions home and abroad.By exercising democracy in elections, decision-making, management and supervision and guaranteeing the people's rights to be informed, to participate, to be heard and to oversee, the ruling party and the government are emancipating themselves and stepping up governance reform for good governance, Yu said.Observers believe the 12th five-year program will go beyond plans of economic and social development to involve administrative, political, social and cultural restructuring.Wang Yukai, a professor at the Beijing-based Chinese Academy of Governance, said the country's next five-year program will become a major step on the road to build an effective and accountable government."Good governance is a guarantee for CPC to remain in power," Wang said.Hu Angang, director of the Center for China Studies, a top think tank for policy-making under the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Tsinghua University, said the Scientific Outlook on Development would be carried out in an all-round way in the next five years.The Scientific Outlook on Development was proposed by the CPC in 2003, against the backdrop of rapid economic growth and a series of problems including excessive consumption of resources, damages to the environment and a widening gap between the rich and poor. TOKYO, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshito Sengoku said Friday that China and Japan, the two major economic powers in Asia, need to work toward improving bilateral relations."It is true that Japan-China relations have shown signs of deterioration," Sengoku, Japan's top government spokesman, said at a press conference, adding that efforts were needed to deepen bilateral relations between the two countries.The comments came as the Naha, Okinawa, prosecutor's office said Friday it will release Zhan Qixiong, the 41-year-old Chinese fishing boat captain who has been held for more than two weeks.Two Japan Coast Guard patrol ships and a Chinese trawler collided in waters off China's Diaoyu Islands on Spet. 7.The next day, the Japan Coast Guard illegally seized the Chinese trawler and detained its captain and 14 fishermen on board, drawing strong protests from the Chinese government and its people.The Japanese released the fishermen and boat last week but held the captain. China has repeatedly urged Japan to unconditionally send back the captain to avoid additional damage to their bilateral ties.According to local media, Zhan was to leave Japan on Friday. BEIJING, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao said Tuesday that China and Russia should make joint efforts to achieve common development and combat global challenges.While meeting with Chairman of the Russian Federation Council Sergei Mironov in Beijing, Hu urged the two countries to work for the establishment of a more fair and rational international order.Mironov's visit, which ran from Oct. 17 to 19, was another high-level visit on the heels of Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's three-day state visit to China last month."China is willing to work with Russia to materialize consensuses and tasks agreed to during high-level visits," said Hu.Mironov on Monday co-chaired with China's top legislator Wu Bangguo the fourth meeting of the cooperation committee between China's National People's Congress and the Russian Federation Council, a regular parliamentary exchange mechanism for the benefit of bilateral ties.Hu said China supports the increasing exchanges between legislative bodies of the two countries, hoping the two sides could help publicize the ideas of generational friendship and reciprocal cooperation, push forward pragmatic cooperation in various fields and cooperation on adjacent regions of both countries.Hu also said the two countries should enhance coordination within multilateral mechanisms in a bid to contribute to improved China-Russia strategic partnership of coordination.Echoing Hu's remarks, Mironov said the sound development of Russia-China ties complies with the mutual interests of both countries, adding that Medvedev's successful visit, during which the two countries signed a package of deals and agreements, would have a positive impact on future bilateral cooperation.The Russian Federation Council will play its due role in facilitating bilateral cooperation in such areas as politics, trade and energy so as to make new contributions to the friendship between the two countries, Mironov said.Premier Wen Jiabao also met with Mironov later on Tuesday, and called on the two governments to fully implement consensuses reached by the two sides, inject new vitality into the two countries' modernization process and maintain world peace and stability."The profound changes of the international situation has not only offered precious opportunities but also brought forward higher request for developing China-Russia strategic partnership of coordination," Wen said.
