The Cambridge Analytica?scandal has thrust Facebook privacy settings into the national conversation after the political firm used the personal data of about 50 million people without their consent.Now, Mozilla is helping Firefox users keep their Facebook data secure so they won't be exploited in the future.The company has introduced a Firefox extension that it says will make it much harder for Facebook to track which websites you browse.Facebook has developed a network of trackers that tell the social media site which of its users are visiting certain webpages, like online retailers. Facebook will then use that information to serve its users ads based on what products they've been viewing.Mozilla says its Facebook Container extension will make it much more difficult to track which websites you visit, and keep your browsing information private.Mozilla admits the extension isn't perfect. In a blog post, the company said that the extension would not have prevented user information from being abused in the Cambridge Analytica scandal. It also says that Facebook Container would not work well on sites which require you to use Facebook information to log in.But Mozilla says the simple step of downloading the extension is giving power back to internet users. "Troves of data are being collected on your behavior on the internet, and so giving users a choice to limit what they share in a way that is under their control is important," the company wrote.To download Facebook container, first download the free Mozilla Firefox browser if you're not already using it. The family of Pfc. Vanessa Guillen, an Army soldier who was allegedly killed by a fellow soldier and his girlfriend, met with President Donald Trump on Thursday.Guillen's family began the day with a morning march on the National Mall in support of a military-focus sexual harassment bill bearing her name. The family and their attorney later met with the President at the White House.The event was closed to the press."It hit me very hard," Trump said later Tuesday about meeting with Guillen's family, according to CBS News. "We didn't want this to be swept under the rug."Guillen was last seen on April 22 at Fort Hood, Texas, where she had been stationed. On June 30, Guillen's dismembered remains were found on the banks of a nearby river.Hours later, a suspect in the case, Spc. Aaron Robinson died by suicide during a standoff with police. Robinson's girlfriend, Cecily Ann Aguilar, was later charged with assisting in hiding Guillen's body. Aguilar has pleaded not guilty.Guillen's family maintains that she had been sexually harassed by Robinson and others prior to her disappearance. They claim she did not report the abuse to her superior officers because she feared retribution.While an investigation into sexual harassment against Guillen remains open, the Army has not yet confirmed the family's claims. According to ABC News, the Army has confirmed that Guillen may have been harassed, but it was not of a sexual nature.The bill for which Guillen's family was marching, the #IAmVanessaGuillen Bill, would allow military members to file harassment claims with third-party agencies instead of within their chain of command."We will not accept anything less than justice for Vanessa," Attorney Natalie Khawam said, according to KPRC-TV in Houston. "When someone volunteers to serve our country, they deserve to be treated with dignity and respect by their fellow service members. This bill will help us provide the protection and respect to others that was denied to Vanessa." 1995

The Department of Homeland Security formally requested that the Pentagon extend the deployment of active-duty troops on the southern border Friday, potentially extending their deployment 45 days beyond the original deadline of December 15."Given the ongoing threat at our Southern border -- today the Department of Homeland Security submitted a request for assistance to the Department of Defense to extend its support through January 31, 2019," Department of Homeland Security spokeswoman Katie Waldman told CNN in a statement."This request refines support to ensure it remains aligned with the current situation, the nature of the mission, and (Customs and Border Protection) operational requirements," she added.The Pentagon confirmed receipt of the request but said Secretary of Defense James Mattis had yet to sign off on it:"We have received the Request for Assistance from the Department of Homeland Security, it is with the Secretary (of Defense) for consideration."There are currently some 5,600 troops at the border, divided among Texas, California and Arizona.President Donald Trump sent the troops after spending the weeks leading up to the midterm elections decrying a procession of migrants that was still thousands of miles from the US border. Last week, Trump granted the troops new powers to aid in "crowd control, temporary detention and cursory search" while protecting Customs and Border Protection personnel from the migrants, should they engage in violence.Defense officials have suggested that some of the troops, primarily engineers involved in enhancing infrastructure at points of entry, could be drawn down in the relative near term as those tasks are completed.Two officials tell CNN that the number of trumps assigned to the mission is likely to drop to 4,000 as a result.Other functions, including helicopter support to help move Customs and Border Protection personnel to different areas along the border, are likely to continue.The deployment's extension means the Pentagon's initial cost estimate of million for the border deployment is likely to increase as that estimate was based on the mission ending on December 15. 2175

The city is opening a code enforcement investigation into an apartment complex that is made up almost entirely of short-term vacation rentals.The complex, called The Louisiana, is on University Avenue in North Park. A company called Sonder has leased each of its 13 market-rate apartments to rent to visitors (the complex has two affordable units as well). A one-bedroom apartment is listed at 0 per night for a weekend in October. The city made the call after a group called Save San Diego Neighborhoods held a press conference outside the complex Thursday.Board member Brian Curry said this type of business is contributing to the city's supply crunch that pushes up rents. He also questioned whether the complex, permitted as mixed-use apartments, is allowed to be operated more like a hotel. "It is simply wrong to steal housing from our residents to meet the visitor room night demand," said Curry. In a statement before the city announced its investigation, Sonder defended its arrangement with the developer. "Sonder San Diego strictly complies with all local laws and pays all local taxes, period. Contrary to recent false claims, our location on University Avenue is fully licensed, legal and not zoned ‘residential' but for commercial and mixed-use with visitor accommodation allowed by right," the statement said. "We look forward to continuing to grow and give back in San Diego while working with the City on real solutions for affordable housing.”Additionally, the buildings developer said the extra funds from the lease with Sonder is helping to fund other housing construction faster. The FDA said in a news conference on Friday that there have been “roughly" five adverse reactions to Pfizer’s coronavirus vaccine, which began distribution earlier this week.According to FDA and Pfizer officials, 2.9 million doses of the vaccine was distributed this week. Those doses mostly went to health care workers and those living and working in assisted living facilities. It’s unclear exactly how many of those 2.9 million doses have been administered, as of Friday.Dr. Peter Marks, director of the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, told reporters on Friday that one of the five adverse events caused a serious reaction. Marks did not go into detail on the locations or conditions of all the cases. The FDA has not responded for a request for additional information.Marks said that a case in Alaska was the most serious of the reactions being investigated.“We will continue to watch these closely. It is difficult to talk about them without any kind of good certainty until we have more information on them,” Marks said.FDA officials said that it’s possible the reactions were from the vaccine’s active ingredient polyethylene glycol. According to government information, the ingredient can cause known side effects such as bloating, diarrhea, nausea, cramps, gas and hives.FDA administrator Dr. Stephen Hahn said that the vaccine’s monitoring program is working well.“One of the things the FDA does well and uniquely is really getting to the bottom to events like allergic reactions,” Hahn said.On Friday, a second vaccine received FDA authorization.
