But many are saying it also has lingering effects on the tourism industry, both in San Diego and Tijuana.Sunday, Nov. 25, seemed like the beginning of the end for Wes Barba, the owner and operator of Baja Border Tours. The San Diego-based small group tour company specializes in day trips to Mexico.“It’s killing me. It’s really killing me,” West Barba said. “We go to Ensenada, Rosarito, and Tijuana, and the Guadalupe Valley for wine tasting."After the migrant caravan rush toward San Ysidro, Barba's phones have been ringing off the hook with last-minute cancellations.“They say ‘It’s going to be a problem coming back. Are we going to be in danger?’” Barba said. Each day trip, Barba usually has ten clients. Not anymore. With more clients canceling daily, he has no choice but to cancel the trips altogether.“10 customers to one customer. My profit went from 0 to zero a day,” Barba said. Barba said his counterparts in Mexico are also feeling the tourism lull. There are several reports of popular tourists areas in Rosarito, looking like ghost towns. Barba had no clients Sunday but still drove his tour van south of the border.“I have a great, great customer named Kathleen, and she put together her neighbors, and we put all the clothes together,” Barba said.Barba's customer inspired him and his family to gather clothes, shoes, and anything else he thought would help the migrants stuck in Tijuana. He put those donations into a suitcase and drove them to the migrant camps. He was struck by the conditions he saw first-hand.“Sleeping on the ground, under those tents. It gets me,” Barba said. Barba is fully aware that the recipients of his donations are the reason for his company’s dismal profits. But at the end of the day, he said his heart wins over his pocketbook. “Even though they are affecting our business, it’s not about ‘We hate you. You guys aren’t helping us. We’re not going to help you.’ No, it’s not like that. We actually want to give back also. Listen, we are all humans. We need to help each other,” he said. Barba is a proud U.S. citizen. He became one after he and his American wife escaped dangerous conditions in Colombia decades ago. (KGTV) -- A man was arrested over the weekend after a sideshow on the San Francisco Bay Bridge created miles of traffic.In video posted on social media, three cars are seen doing donuts in the middle of the bridge around 10:45 a.m. Sunday.One of the drivers, Gabriel Mora, 21, crashed his white mustang convertible, giving California Highway Patrol to make the arrest.Hours later, several other cars were caught on video burning rubber in the parking lot of pier 30 just south of the bridge.Residents who live in the area say they often call police about the car shows, but say they usually happen late at night. Police said the incident on the bridge caused traffic to back up for miles. 718

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla — George Zimmerman, the neighborhood watchdog acquitted in the fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin, has been charged with stalking a private investigator.According to investigators from the Seminole County Sheriff's Office, Zimmerman threatened and harassed Dennis Warren, a private investigator, in December 2017.The findings were handed over to prosecutors in March and they have decided to move forward prosecution.Zimmerman was served on May 3.He is scheduled to appear in court on May 30 at 9 a.m. for an arraignment. 553

(CNS) - Orange County supervisors Tuesday voted to declare Aug. 24 as Kobe Bryant Day.Bryant was born on Aug. 23 and wore the number 24 in his playing days, said Orange County Board Chairwoman Michelle Steel, explaining why she settled on Aug. 24 as the date to honor the former Lakers great who died Jan. 26 in a helicopter crash that also killed his daughter and seven others.Bryant also wore the number 8 during his first several seasons in the NBA.Steel said Bryant, who lived in Newport Beach, was a "treasured member of our community," who "inspired so many men and women to pursue their dreams and never give up."Supervisor Don Wagner, in an apparent reference to Bryant's 2003 sexual assault civil case in Colorado, which Bryant ultimately settled, said the former NBA star had his ups and downs in his lifetime."Kobe Bryant's life, like each one of us who ever lived, presents moments to celebrate and to condemn," Wagner said. SCOTTSDALE, Arizona — It's not paper or plastic that's taking over a Scottsdale, Arizona recycling center — it's trash. Every day at Republic Services workers line a conveyer belt scouring for items that don't belong. But the belts are moving slower than they used to. That's because so much trash has been moving through, workers need more time to pick it out. "A cushion like this, not recyclable," Richard Coupland with Republic Services said. "Baby seats, not recyclable." But it's not just time-consuming. Coupland said when you put things that don't belong into a recycle bin, it can contaminate the other items that do belong. In return, that produces more trash. "Focus on your fundamental material, but most importantly that it's empty, clean and dry," he said. Fundamental material includes paper, plastic, aluminum and cardboard. However, if you're recycling a ketchup bottle, it must be completely empty and rinsed out. All the trash coming through the center is also costing more money. Coupland said China was at one time one of the largest buyers of recyclable material. However, the center has stopped shipping items there. "They've lowered their acceptable criteria from 3 percent to .5 percent," Coupland said. "That's a level that few folks are able to achieve right now without making significant changes to their operation." That's forcing the company to sell all it's paper, plastic, and aluminum to different markets, at a cost. "Those markets are not able to pay the same value for the material," Coupland said.In return, that can cost you more when it comes to pick up fees. However, you can help by being conscious about what you put in your bin. "Many don't realize that the bottom of a pizza box which is contaminated with grease of a pizza, that's trash," Coupland said. "No one is interested in buying that. So the proper thing to do is rip the box, give me the top and throw away the bottom."  2052
