The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department says the search Saturday is focusing on an area of Highway 18 where Carlos Baltazar’s car was located by the California Highway Patrol on Sept. 20. Baltazar is a member of a U.S. Forest Service Interagency Hotshot Crew. He was reported missing by family members on Sept. 24. At the time, he was off duty and not in the area of the El Dorado Fire in the San Bernardino National Forest. Another hotshot, Charles Morton, died while fighting that fire on Sept. 17. 654

SAN DIEGO (AP) — An animal rights group is asking the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to investigate SeaWorld over allegations that it misled investors about injuries during its dolphin shows.People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals said Thursday it had sent a letter to the SEC saying the marine theme park had lied when it said no animals are injured during the shows.The SEC declined comment.The group known as PETA is a shareholder in the company and alleges that SeaWorld trainers have caused injuries when they stand on the dolphins.It says veterinarians have found wounds and scars on dolphins at SeaWorld parks in California, Texas and Florida.SeaWorld said in response that it treats its animals well and has rescued thousands. SAN DIEGO (AP) — Former Congressman Darrell Issa is poised to end a political retirement that started only last year when he lost his seat in a Democratic wave that turned over seven Republican-held California districts. Issa scheduled a news conference for Thursday and will announce he's seeking the seat held by fellow Republican and longtime-U.S. Rep. Duncan Hunter, who is running for re-election while under indictment on corruption charges, said Larry Wilske, a retired Navy SEAL and Republican also running in Hunter's San Diego-area district.In an interview with The Associated Press on Wednesday, Wilske said Issa told him he will run. Wilske plans to drop out and support Issa. Issa's entry will make the district near the U.S.-Mexico border one of the most closely watched races in the country.RELATED: Former Rep. SAN DIEGO — When Johan Engman scouts locations for his breakfast-centric restaurants, he always seeks places with lots of outdoor space.“Just because we're in Southern California,” he says. “Not because I was predicting a pandemic.”But that criteria sure helped when the coronavirus outbreak hit, and restaurants became limited to outdoor-only seating.Some Breakfast Republic locations didn't lose any capacity, while others, such as its Encinitas eatey, lost about 75 percent.“We're surviving,” Engman says. “I think 2020 is really about being here in 2021.”On Monday - a little help making it through the year. Gov. Newsom and the county paved the way for restaurants across San Diego County to serve tables indoors at 25 percent capacity, after two months of outdoor only. Still, it’s unclear whether the increased restaurant capacity will lead to more jobs- as tens of thousands of displaced workers wait for the call.In July 2019, more than 130,000 San Diegans worked in county restaurants, according to the state Employment Development Department. Last month - with restaurants at outdoor only - that number was just 103,000, a nearly 21 percent drop.Alan Gin, an economist at the University of San Diego, said restaurants will be cautious when it comes to adding staff.“If they can get by without additional staff I think they're going to try to do that,” Gin said. “But if they're strained, if they're already at capacity and to add those 25 percent they're going to need to bring more people back, I think that's what they'll do.Engman says Breakfast Republic will be hiring with the increased capacity, but it’s too early to know the number. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A fire that erupted in the attic of a Rancho Penasquitos home early Monday displaced seven residents, but nobody was hurt.The blaze was reported shortly after 12:45 a.m. at the two-story house in the 8400 block of Corte Fragata, off Carmel Mountain Road north of state Route 56, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.One person in the home told dispatchers the residents smelled smoke and saw smoke coming from the attic, SDFRD spokeswoman Monica Munoz said. Crews knocked down the fire within 25 minutes and kept the flames contained to the attic area, but the house sustained smoke damage, she said.The American Red Cross was called in to help the displaced residents -- four adults and three children -- arrange for temporary lodging.The cause of the fire was under investigation. 821
