(KGTV) - Having healthy kids is important. But how do you know what kind of physical, social or emotional development your child may need? Here are some tips from some of our local experts. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE MOST IMPORTANT BASICS OF CHILDHOOD WE CAN EASILY TAKE CARE OF?* Making sure your child is up to date with medical and dental check-ups; including immunizations.* Focusing on some issues you need to control and be firm about. Making sure there is no argument around safety issues like putting them in a car seat, using bike helmets or playing near traffic.* Create routines and keep them; set limits. This will in turn make your child feel secure and safe. HOW CAN WE RAISE STRONG AND INDEPENDENT KIDS?* Assign simple tasks such as feeding pets or putting toys away.* Allow your child to participate in decision making – let them pick out which vegetables to have for dinner; don’t give open ended. * Encourage independence in bathing and dressing; brushing their teeth or choosing to what shirt to wear or even learning to put their shoes on.* Give children their space to be creative, choosing activities and fail with support. HOW DOES THE YMCA HELP BUILD SOCIAL EMOTIONAL SKILLS IN EARLY CHILDHOOD?* 90% of brain development happens in first 5 years of life.* Children learn through play. Our programs support parents and early childhood educators.* Understand what is developmentally appropriate at various stages. Each child develops at different rate but know the stages of a 3-year old versus a 5-year old.* Set realistic expectations; remember they are still learning.* Spend quality one-on-one time with children by reading or playing games. (KGTV) - A group of San Diego lawmakers, water agencies and business leaders are joining forces in opposition of a possible new state tax on tap water.Under the proposed State Senate Bill 623, Californians would see an additional 95 cents per month on their water bills.SB623 is one of two articles of legislation being discussed by state lawmakers that could see residents’ water bills go up by more than per month. The goal of the tax would be to clean polluted groundwater around the state, particularly agricultural areas where water is considered undrinkable -- with arsenic, lead and nitrate levels that have been compared to Flint, Michigan’s crisis.State Sen. Bill Monning (D-Carmel), who authored the bill, said SB623 "will establish the Safe and Affordable Drinking Water Fund to provide an ongoing source of funding to finance water improvement projects throughout California. The USGS map below show various water sites around California. Click on the map for more information on the sites. Approximately 300 water systems in California currently have pollutant violations, such as arsenic, lead, nitrates, and uranium that have been linked to nausea and vomiting, cancer, reduced mental functioning in children, nervous system decline, miscarriages, and numerous other health issues.Support of the fund will come from a fertilizer mill fee, a fee on dairies, and a fee assessed on water bills of no more than a month per household, and is anticipated to generate 0 million a year. Low-income rate exemptions are provided for households under 200% of the federal poverty level."The State Water Resources Control Board created a map of water pollutant assessments throughout the state. Click on the map below for more data. Numerous agricultural groups and environmental organizations have come out in support of SB623, but many, including the San Diego County Taxpayers Association and other local groups, have said the bill is “counterproductive because it will make it harder for low-income residents to afford this necessity. A precedent-setting tax also could lead to additional taxes on water for a variety of project and programs.” 2175

(KGTV) - Did only one person actually sign the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776?Yes.Despite the grand image we've been shown, only John Hancock signed the document on July 4, 1776.Most of the other delegates didn't sign it until August 2nd.But even that wasn't the end. When copies were printed with what was believed to be all the signatures in 1777, Thomas McKean's name was left off.It wasn't added to the document until around 1781. 454

(KGTV) — Avocado lovers at two southern California colleges are in for a treat — if they're willing to take on the "responsibility."Researchers at Loma Linda University and the University of California, Los Angeles are looking for candidates to eat avocados in large and in small quantities — in the name of science, of course.Participants of HAT, the Habitual diet and Avocado Trial, will be paid 0 for their participation in the six-month trial. But the catch is candidates will be randomly assigned whether they stuff their diet with avocados or just eat two per month.RELATED: San Diego County's record heat may prove devastating to avocado cropThe test group will be given 16 avocados every two weeks and be required to eat one a day throughout the study. The control group will be assigned to eat no more than two avocados per month during that same time period.Researchers hope to learn more about how avocados affect health, energy, and metabolism, and test whether it truly is a magical fruit as past studies have suggested.HAT participants must be: 1099
