Paying rent is increasingly a struggle for many Americans, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.Workers need to make almost an hour on average to afford a modest 1-bedroom apartment and about an hour for a 2-bedroom, according to a new report by the National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC).“So, if it was the case before that millions of low wage workers were struggling to afford their rent, we anticipate that many more will be unable to now and may not be able to hold onto their homes,” said Dan Threet, an NLIHC research analyst.It’s not just a large metro area problem either. In almost every county nationwide, a full-time minimum wage job isn't enough to cover a 1-bedroom apartment.And when it comes to disparities, the numbers tell the story. About 44% of Black Americans and 42% of Latinx are rent burdened, meaning they spend more than 30% of their income on housing. That's compared to 26% of white households.It’s an issue that requires massive investments on multiple levels, both short and long term.“I think we've seen a lot of evidence, especially in recent years’ research, that shows how foundational housing is to our health, our children's health, to their education, to their economic opportunities and to our general wellbeing,” said Threet.Emergency rental assistance needs about 0 billion to help people stay in homes now and prevent a wave of evictions.Pre-pandemic, three out of four people who qualified for housing assistance didn't get it.There are several pieces of legislation proposed to address the affordable housing crisis. Photographer Matthew Dippel captured a once-in-a-lifetime photo earlier this month at Yosemite National Park, capturing the moment of what appears to be a marriage proposal. Dippel's photo shows the proposal taking place on a cliff, with the sun shining in the background. Now Dippel is hoping to find the couple in the photo. "Alright internet I need your help," Dippel said. "Help me find these two. This was taken at Taft Point, in Yosemite National Park on October 6th, 2018. I took this photo and would love for them to find it.Since posting the photo on Facebook last week, Dippel has had a few false leads. According to Dippel's Twitter account, those leads led nowhere. As of Tuesday, Dippel has been unsuccessful in finding the couple.  798

Police are investigating two related robberies that happened late last night.A 71-year-old woman, her adult daughter and juvenile granddaughter were robbed by 2 men around 11:18 p.m. in the parking garage at Treasure Island on the Las Vegas Strip. Police say the 3 females were battered during the incident. The extent of their injuries are unknown.Next, police say a couple, both of whom are 18 years old, were robbed by the 2 men with a gun in a parking lot at Fashion Show mall.Police spotted the men in the parking garage of the SLS hotel-casino. The men rammed an empty patrol car in their attempt to escape. After a short foot chase, they were taken into custody by Las Vegas police.  703

PALA MESA, CA (KGTV) -- 10News is now digging deeper in the history of violations issued to the company that operated the bus that was involved in this rainy Saturday's deadly crash on I-15 just south of Pala Mesa. “One life lost is too many,” says Chris Turner with the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance. We spoke to him over FaceTime on Monday. The bus was operated by Executive Lines Inc., based in El Monte. According to the federal administration that oversees bus inspections, the company's fleet has had no crashes over the past two years, until now. However, they have had 26 maintenance violations, reportedly. After a November 2019 inspection, the same bus that was involved in this weekend's crash was reportedly issued two violations related to windshield wipers and spare fuses. Turner says violations like those should’ve been fixed right away. “Those need to be remedied before the vehicle is dispatched again,” he adds.10News spoke to attorney Nathan Morris about a separate major bus crash that happened last September in Utah, injuring 22 tourists. He's representing seven of the victims. “[I’m representing] three of those who were killed in the crash and their families as well as four others who were injured to various degrees,” he adds.Morris says bus passengers can look online for a snapshot of a company's safety. “They have a right as passengers of that bus to make sure that the driver and the companies and anybody else are held accountable for keeping the rules,” he says.“You enter the company's USDOT number and it will tell you whether or not they’re a safe company,” says Turner of researching bus companies online. A USDOT number is issued by the Department of Transportation. If you can’t find it on a company’s website, Turner says you can make a phone call. He adds, “One of the things they should readily give you when asked is the USDOT number and if not, that's immediately a red flag. Why won't you provide the number that just lets me check to make sure you're safe?”10News contacted Executive Lines Inc. on Monday to ask if there was anyone who could speak about the crash. Parents might be anxious and apprehensive for back to school, but so many kids are ready.“The next month might be the longest month we’ve had waiting for school to come back,” said Carrie Rea, laughing.Rea is a mother of four in Akron — two kids at St. Vincent-St. Mary, two at St. Sebastian.They are in ninth grade, sixth grade, fourth grade, and first grade. Her hands are full — but her thinking is straightforward as back-to-school begins.“Make sure we’re flexible so that our kids are flexible because we are going to be the dictators of how our kids feel,” Rea said. “Even if we feel a certain way, that we just roll with the punches and don’t let our kids sense our own frustration because they need to learn.”One thing that might frustrate parents is school supply shopping — so different this year than ever before."The number one thing you’re going to need this year are masks, right?” said Rachel Krych, who runs the blog “Couponing with Rachel.”She said every store has masks readily available now, at all price points.From bulk buys on Amazon to mix and match at Old Navy.“Also your neighbor down the street probably makes homemade masks so I think masks in general, you’ll be able to find a lot of,” Krych said.She also says to look for what are called “loss leaders” to save some cash on common things on the supply list.“Loss leaders are a drastically reduced item that you can buy every week at every store and they’re usually about 5 to 10 of these,” Krych said. “For instance, like 25 cent crayons or a five-pack of glue sticks.”If you have your list and shop those loss leaders specifically over the next three or four weeks, you’ll be able to stock up at better prices.As for where to buy — Krych said the big names have the best deals — Target, Walmart, Meijer’s, Marc’s, Staples, even Aldis.You might also need to add a sturdy backpack to the list since Krych said she’s seen some schools implementing “no-locker” rules.For Carrie and her kids, back to school also means practicing things that aren’t on the syllabus.Constant hand washing at home so they’re ready in class, trying on different masks to make sure they fit and are comfortable, and even rethinking what we’ve always been taught — sharing is caring.“We had to parent in a totally different way and say ‘You’re not being mean - but for the time being, you have to keep whatever you have It’s yours and you have to keep it to yourself.’” Rea explained. “Still be polite and mannerly to everyone around you, but understand you can’t share.”And when it comes to things like disinfectant wipes and hand sanitizer, several districts in Northeast Ohio tell News 5 they hope parents can contribute but understand if they can’t.
