Conditions aren’t ideal for tactical training, but trainee Teresa Fast is pushing through. "There's definitely winds, or rains, or whatever is out there,” she says. “We just work through it. It definitely makes you tough."Fast is among the hundreds of people each year who graduate and become U.S. border patrol agents. But before that happens, agents must first pass the coursework at CBP Border Patrol Academy, located in the desert of southern New Mexico, where they're whipped into shape.The agents are trained on real-work scenarios, like safely ending a vehicle pursuit. These types of situations were the focus of the academy's overhaul about a year ago, when the school switched over from a classroom 3-month curriculum to a more hands-on regimen that lasts 6 months. "The students actually see some of the things they will encounter in the field, so getting out of the classroom and making it scenario-based,” explains Deputy Chief Carlos Ortiz with the academy. Other scenarios include vehicle stops and interrogations, which are usually practiced in Spanish, a language they all have to learn. "You have to be a strong and willing person to be able to be out there day in day out,” Ortiz says. And 47-year-old Richard Douglas is willing and up for the task. Douglas was a border agent two decades ago, before moving over to Homeland Security after 9/11. He says now is a good time to return to the border. "The border patrol has made a big push to increase their numbers, and it was a really good time to come back for me,” Douglas says. Deputies say two women tried to use a drone to illegally deliver cell phones and tobacco to an inmate in Martin County, Florida.The Martin County Sheriff's Office said they received a call around 2 a.m. Sunday about a drone hovering over the Martin Correctional Institution and possibly delivering a package on the roof of an inmate housing facility.Correctional officers said they made contact with 22-year-old Concetta Didiano, who was spotted driving a black pickup truck slowly in front of MCI. Also in the vehicle was 40-year-old Cassandra Kerr, officers said.According to the Sheriff's Office, correctional officers found a package in the area where the drone was spotted.Kerr admitted to flying the drone to deliver contraband to an inmate at MCI, while Didiano drove the truck, detectives said.Kerr and Didiano are facing several charges, including Introduction of Contraband into a Correctional Facility. 925

"At the time we felt it was a part of our DNA and we should stay in it. So many people in the country are law-abiding citizens who use firearms to hunt, to use from a recreation standpoint. We didn't think it was right to exit the business completely."That could be changing. Dick's, one of the country's biggest gun retailers, has been quietly testing the water on whether to pull out entirely from what it calls the "hunt" business, including firearms. That has been putting extra stress on him and his crew.“A lot of work on us,” Almanza said. “It’s more tiring, but I guess more hours.”And now, it's more concerning because the impact of this labor shortage is being felt across the country.Associated Builders and Contractors projects the construction industry will need nearly half a million more workers in 2020 and an additional 740,000 more in 2021.This shortage of construction workers could end up costing you.“The laborers, they affect everybody’s lives,” said Zsuzsa Balogh, Ph.D., the program coordinator in the Department of Civil Engineering Technology at Metropolitan State University of Denver.She says the reasons for the shortage range from retirement to construction workers retraining themselves for other industries.With less skilled laborers and more of the qualified workers clocking overtime, Balogh believes that extra cost is passed on to consumers.“You can see the increase of the cost,” she said. “Basically, somewhere that money has to show, and the consumers will be the ones to pay that extra money.”In an attempt to help attract more skilled workers, some contractors are offering improved incentives like health care, 401k options and yearly raises.“It’s as bad as we’ve ever seen,” said Todd Smith, vice president of operations for Lawrence Construction Company. “Very few people are going into this industry.” Smith says this shortage of skilled workers is creating a timeline of concern.“Right now, we’ve had ads out for certain positions for six months and haven’t gotten any responses yet,” he said.
