SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A colony of 300,000 bees lives on the roof of the Marriott Marquis in Downtown San Diego, and the hotel says that's perfectly fine with them.In fact, they planned it that way.The bees are part of Bee Leaf USA's Urban Bee Keeping program, which is an effort to help the struggling American Honey Bee population."This is the absolute most fantastic thing we can do for beekeeping at this point," says Travis Wolfe, from Bee Leaf USA."For a corporate entity to onboard something as outlandish as honey bees to offset their carbon footprint is one of the most moving and engaging things that one of these businesses can do," he says. The bees have been on the roof for about five years. They gather pollen in a three-mile radius around the hotel. They also make honey -- lots of it."They make about 7 gallons a year," says Wolfe. "That really is an enormous amount to consume."Fortunately, the hotel's Marina Kitchen and Bar helps use the honey."The ethos of the restaurant is to be as local as possible," says Executive Chef Aron Schwartz. "What could be more local than our roof?"Schwartz has put the honey in seasonal offerings for the last few years. Recently, it's been part of the salad dressing in their tomato and cucumber salad. It's also been featured on the charcuterie board and in a honey almond cake."It's about being restrained," says Schwartz. We're not going to put honey into 16 dishes. We're going to put it in one or two."This month, the bar is adding a honey-infused whiskey to several of its cocktails. They've partnered with Malahat Distillery in Miramar, which is aging their whiskey for six months in barrels coated with honey from the roof of the Marriott."We get a more naturally infused honey flavor out of that than some of the bigger producers who just stir honey into the whiskey," says Bar Operations Supervisor Michael Girard."It tastes amazing. You can smell the honey, you can taste the honey, but it's not a sweet sugar bomb," Girard says. The drinks will be available throughout the summer. Meanwhile, the bees will stay on the roof indefinitely."It really is a true demonstration of fantastic sustainability," says Wolfe. 2179

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A beloved comic book is making a comeback, 13 years after disappearing off the shelves.San Diego artist Dennis Caco created Max Boost! in 1998, the original Import Tuner racing comic. "I just love creation. Creation has always been my thing. I love being very creative, making things from something to nothing," said Caco. RELATED: 'Gramma in a Box' using technology to connect generationsThe story line was rooted in Caco's own experience with 90s tuner culture when young guys tuned import cars like Hondas. "We were ridiculed and made fun of, but the performance was there!" says Caco. Little did he know in 1998, the something he created then, would touch thousands of people."Max Boost! started off as a little comic strip inside Import Tuner magazine, and eventually ballooned to about one million readers per month in its heyday," said Caco.RELATED: Vietnam veteran's legacy showcased in new Carlsbad art exhibitMax Boost is the story's hero. "Max Boost, just like everyone in life, we're always the underdog, our dreams are big and menacing, and Max Boost is inspiring that story of overcoming all odds."Caco explains that Max Boost was on its way to becoming a Saturday cartoon show, but the deal fell through. "We worked really hard to get the deal resurrected, and we couldn't, and that was really depressing."RELATED: Act of kindness creates unlikely friendship between San Diego boy and lowrider ownerHe put his pencil down for 13 years, leaving fans in the dark, until now.Through an online fundraiser campaign, Caco is releasing collector's editions of the series. His original goal of ,320 is now over ,000."We really don't know the effect we make, but now I see and know I don't want to quit!" said Caco. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A 4.9-magnitude earthquake and several smaller shakeups recorded in Imperial County on Wednesday were reportedly felt in San Diego County. The swarm of earthquakes was centered around the Westmorland area. While many of the smaller quakes were recorded between 2.5- and 3.7-magnitude, about 80 earthquakes measuring at least 2.5-magnitude were recorded between 4 p.m. and 7:15 p.m.The largest earthquake as of 5:45 p.m. registered at 4.9-magnitude, according to the agency's latest earthquakes map.Seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones tweeted that Wednesday's series of earthquakes was one of the largest swarms Imperial Valley has seen, adding that the area is historically active in swarms."The swarm happening now south of the Salton Sea, near Westmoreland is over 30 km south of the end of the San Andreas," Jones tweeted. "It is in the Brawley seismic zone, a common source of swarms. So far largest is M4.4. Too far from the San Andreas to change the probability of a quake on it." 1004
