Researchers are trying to find out as much as they can about great white sharks. After a couple of attacks involving people last year, there are new efforts to learn more about these animals. It’s moments like the incident at Nauset Beach South that shark experts are studying more closely. Video taken of the beach shows white sharks feeding on seals close to the shore. Now, researchers are launching new studies, including one looking at the feeding habits and behaviors of these sharks. “We're essentially going to be giving iPhones to white sharks to track their activity in three dimensions at a really fine scale,” explains Megan Winton, a research scientist with the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy. Winton and other researchers will be tagging sharks with devices similar to what's in smartphones. “We'll be able to identify how often they're feeding on seals. We'll be able to look for relationships with feeding activity and environmental conditions,” Winton says. The data would be given to officials to use to provide better warnings on beaches. The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy is currently pouring over data on a population study they just finished. “Based on the video footage, we were able to identify every shark we saw to an individual level,” Winton says. So far, the researchers have identified more than 300 white sharks. Winton calls it a conservation success story, thanks to protections put in place over the last few decades. “So one thing I like to remind people is that these are large, amazing animals and they're very capable predators and they're certainly deserving of our respect,” Winton says. “But they're not monsters out there, lurking our coastline menacing our beaches. They're big fish out there eating their natural prey item.” White sharks are the only natural predator to seals in the Cape Cod area, which some residents and fisherman see as a nuisance.Researchers want to see how many seals the sharks are eating and if they can impact the seal population. 2023

“I have never in 23 years ran across this!”That's how assistant Bristow, Oklahoma police chief Kendra Raney described what happened in the ladies restroom of Walmart on Tuesday. "A Walmart employee requesting an ambulance for a lady that was inside the women's bathroom either having a miscarriage, or having a baby," Raney said. That 911 call triggered emergency responses from multiple agencies, including police, fire and the Creek County Ambulance service. It sent paramedics racing to help.Raney described what first responders found, stating, "I understand the Walmart employees performed lifesaving measures and when the ambulance got there, they transported them both to a Tulsa Hospital."The Bristow Fire Department report shows it paramedics worked on the baby girl for 17 minutes. They gave her oxygen and cleared her airways. Finally, she took breaths on her own and made a weak cry.Why was the baby was born in the Walmart restroom? "Mom stated that she started having contractions about 2:30 in the morning that morning and she didn't think that they warranted a visit to the hospital," Raney explains. "She got up later, got her kids off to school and felt that she needed to use the restroom, so she stopped at the Walmart which the middle school's right across from the Walmart."Raney says the mother felt some pressure and then the baby came out. We asked how the mother and baby girl are doing now. Then she added, "Both are gonna make it."Raney said, the incident is still under investigation. Bristow police are not releasing the mother's name, or which hospital the mother and baby were taken to in Tulsa. She expects the investigation to be wrapped up early next week. This article was originally written by Cathy Tatom for KJRH. 1766

This street in Denver is quiet. And that’s why things seemed a little off to Judy Plok last summer, when she saw what was going on at this house. “It was obviously a party house,” said Plok, who lives near the house in question. She and the rest of the neighborhood soon discovered this house was an Airbnb rental, and new guests were coming in every weekend to have a good time. “One Saturday afternoon, the people who were there enjoying themselves got out on the roof. There’s several different levels, and they were jumping off the roof into the pool. if you’re going to party, you’re not going to sit around quietly enjoying a sip of tea,” said Plok. So she and her neighbors decided to do something about it. They contacted the city attorney and took the owner of the house to court. “The judge found in our favor, so we were pleased with that,” said Plok. The house is no longer an Airbnb, and Plok said the neighborhood is quiet again. Orinda, California, is a lot like this street in Denver. It’s quiet and families love it. The town is having issues with Airbnb, too, but, they are far more serious. The day after Halloween, Mayor Inga Miller said she got a phone call no mayor wants to get. There was a shooting at a house party and five people were killed. Miller said she had the same reaction most would, but as mayor she had a job to do as well. “So as those facts developed Friday morning, we set about changing our agenda for the Tuesday meeting to direct staff to include an item on our short term rental housing program,” said Miller. A meeting she knew the town would turn out for. Dozens did, and the meeting was emotional. Soon after, Airbnb responded with a list of reforms: Plans to review every unit A 24/7 hotline for neighbors and what they call a “high risk human review”A look at people who might be high risk reservationsAll in an effort to ban house parties “When I heard Airbnb wanted to ban house parties, I thought, good luck with that. That’s like parents going away and telling their teenage kids, don’t have any parties when we’re gone. How are they going to control that?” said Cheri Young, who is a professor of hospitality at the University of Denver. She’s not sure the ban is enforceable, and she’s not the only one. “I think that’s fine as long as someone defines what a house party is,” said Plok. “You don’t have control over what’s going on in the actual unit, it’s almost impossible. How are they going to know how many people are in there? Do you want Airbnb hosts putting cameras up, inside the home?” said Young. As for Orinda, the city plans on taking action. “An interim ordinance, an urgency ordinance, that would allow us to immediately ban non hosted short term rentals, for a period of 45 days, which time could be extended up to two years, while we look at more long term solutions,” said Miller. 2877

"When they leave their pets here, we treat them like they're still alive. We pet them. We talk to them," said Bob Sutton who recently left his last career to begin working at Pet Passages in Livonia, Michigan. "We want them to feel like they're still being loved and they are."Bob's wife, Wendy, owns the newly opened franchise that offers cremation and visitation for grieving pet owners. In January 2018, the Suttons lost their beloved dog, Lulu. Soon after they realized they have such a love for animals and compassion for those grieving their loss that Bob quit his last job to become the funeral director at their Pet Passages. In addition to cremation services and transportation of pet remains and cremains, Pet Passages also offers euthanasia by a veterinarian for those who don't want to take their pets to an animal clinic, a place that many people know their pets already don't enjoy visiting."They can come here and have a service and say goodbye in a very serene and peaceful environment," said Wendy Sutton. "And we will take care of the pet until we send them home." Pricing varies on the size of the pet being cremated, and they offer a 10% discount for veterans. Pet Passages is located in Livonia, Michigan, and you can visit the company website at 1279
