Meanwhile, Taiwan is also taking measures to restructure its economy and stimulate development," Jia added.He noted that cross-Strait economic cooperation still had much room to grow, especially in the science and technology fields.Jia said the new energy and environmental protection sectors could provide breakthroughs for promoting cross-Strait science and technology innovation.He hoped businessmen and experts would provide useful proposals regarding cooperation in technology research, intellectual property rights and fostering talent.More than 400 people from Taiwan and the mainland attended the forum on Saturday and Sunday in Guangzhou, capital city of Guangdong Province.The event is the sixth of its kind since the forum was first held in 2006.

ZHOUQU, Gansu, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from the massive mudslide in northwest China's Gansu Province has risen to 1,156 as of 4 p.m. Friday, with 588 still missing, local authorities said.The toll stood at 1,144 by Thursday afternoon.More than 1,500 survivors are living in tents or school classrooms while 8,300 have sought shelter with relatives and friends, said Zhao Minxue, head of the publicity department in Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture which administers Zhouqu.Water and power supplies, and telecommunication services in Zhouqu are gradually back to normal thanks to swift repair efforts.Power has been resumed in the key regions of the county seat and at 60 percent of households, the provincial information office said in a statement Friday.Relief teams are digging new wells after finding two new drinking water sources and 21 unpolluted wells, it said.Gansu had received 120.4 million yuan (17.7 million U.S. dollars) in cash donations and relief materials by Friday afternoon, the provincial department of civil affairs said.Meanwhile, relief workers continued to clear the water course of the Bailong River, which overflowed after being blocked by debris, amid fears that more downpours could trigger new floods and mudslides.Rescuers tried to give dignity to the deceased as they were striving to search bodies in the debris. BEIJING, July 26 (Xinhua) -- The All-China Federation of Trade Unions (ACFTU) said Monday it would work to help 1 million job-seekers find jobs this year, as well as provide vocational training for an additional 1 million people.Also, the ACFTU will provide training and job opportunities for 200,000 housekeeping workers this year, said Li Shouzhen, spokesperson with the ACFTU, at a meeting of the national union's executive committee.The ACFTU has launched a five-year campaign of vocational training to help improve the skills of workers, Li said.The ACFTU has been working to protect migrant workers' rights and recovered 2.5 billion yuan (366.03 million U.S. dollars) of defaulted salaries for migrant workers in the first half of the year, Li said.The national union, founded on May 1, 1925, had a membership of 169.94 million, with migrant workers accounting for 24.1 percent of the total, in 2007.ACFTU chairman Wang Zhaoguo said at the meeting that trade unions at various levels should work to protect employee rights to ensure stability.The meeting stressed the importance of the collective wage negotiation system and seeks to implement its use in wage discussions between businesses with trade unions by 2012.

XI'AN, July 3 (Xinhua) -- Three workers were killed Saturday after a towering crane collapsed at a school building construction site in northwest China's Shaanxi Province, according to local authorities.The accident happened around 1 p.m. when five people were working on the crane at the Shangluo Vocational and Technical College in Shangluo City, said a spokesman with the provincial emergency response office.The operator of the crane and two workers died after falling about 30 meters, while two other workers survived the accident by climbed down from the tower, said the spokesman.Another worker who suffered minor injuries was receiving treatment at hospital, he said.The cause of the accident is under investigation.
