SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – County leaders Wednesday approved a plan that would allow San Diego businesses such as gyms and local places of worship to operate outdoors at county parks.The new initiative gives businesses another option as they look to operate amid the coronavirus pandemic. Last month, the state implemented restrictions that forced many businesses to either close completely or move outdoors.Under the plan, space at any of the county’s 30 parks could be used for service via a free permit.“We need to be creative and provide a lot of flexibility, particularly to churches, places of worship, gyms, and other fitness-oriented businesses,” said County Supervisor Dianne Jacob, who proposed the plan.Jacob said of the process to obtain permits: “I’m asking the county to streamline the process so it’s a very quick turnaround.”She added the process is similar to Poway’s, a city with a similar plan already in place.San Diegan Joel Nevarez visits San Diego’s Waterfront Park off Harbor Drive every morning for his workout because he enjoys it and the park was one of his only options."Getting some sunlight is good for you. I get some fresh air since I work from home, so I like it,” he told ABC 10News.Nevarez’s gym is one of many businesses that shut down amid COVID-19 restrictions. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Bernie Sanders is showing his support for dozens of hotel workers on strike over their pay and benefits. The former presidential candidate stood alongside protestors at The Westin Hotel on Friday. “Nobody wants to do this. We would all like to work right now,” says employee Arturo Ramirez.Ramirez has been working at The Westin Hotel since February. With the high cost of living in San Diego, Ramirez says its sometimes hard to pay the bills.“My mother and I, we work at the same hotel. We’re struggling to pay ,100 in rent," Ramirez says.Bernie Sanders took the stage to show his support to workers during his visit to San Diego.“We’re saying to Marriott who owns Westin, we’re saying to every corporation in this country who make billions of dollars in profit, pay your workers a living wage," Sanders said to a crowd of protesters.Employees are asking for a raise of at least an hour and a chance to save for their retirement.“It’s a billion dollar company that needs to pay the workers a living wage so they can live in the city of San Diego," says Bridgett Browning, President of Unite Here Union. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- At least six people were injured Thursday morning after a head-on crash in Dulzura.According to Cal Fire San Diego, the crash happened on state Route 94 near Otay Truck Trail at around 7:30 a.m.The circumstances surrounding the crash are still unclear, but Cal Fire says one person was taken to the hospital with major injuries, and five others had minor injuries.The condition of the person rushed to the hospital is unclear at this time. 468

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- California and 13 other states filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration Thursday, seeking to block changes to the federal food stamp program that would put 380,000 Californians at risk of losing benefits.The lawsuit claims the Trump administration failed to follow proper procedure and is undermining the intent of the food stamp program, known in California as CalFresh."No one should have to choose between a hot meal and paying their rent," said California Attorney General Xavier Becerra in a statement.
