Cocoa Beach is usually packed on Labor Day weekend.“Oh, it’s umbrella city; just an absolute zoo,” says resident Tom Burns. “That’s why we don’t come here on Labor Day.”However, that’s not the scene this year. There isn’t much for Burns and his wife, Melissa, to do but prepare and wait to see how Hurricane Dorian will impact them. “You just get prepared and hope for the best," he says. "It's like a drop on a roller coaster; you know the drop is coming and you go with it.”The Burns pretty much had the water to themselves Sunday, while much of the beach town is boarded up. Many of those who haven't left are making sure Cocoa Beach is ready.“We’re going to expect some damage, but if we’re going to try to mitigate [and] control some of the damage," says resident Cindy Gentile. Gentile is helping board up a friend’s house that’s located just blocks from the beach. “This is a sitting duck right here,” she says. “It’s a bullseye right here." Gentile isn't leaving for the storm.“Obviously preparing for the worst and hoping for the best," she says.It's the kind of preparation Floridians like Sharon Smith have done before. "Our house is fully hurricane proof, and it did about 120 (mph) a couple of years ago," she explains.Speaking of houses, Tom and Melissa Burns closed on their new home in Cocoa Beach just three days ago.“Buying a house is stressful enough, but once we got done with that, they forecasted it and now it was like a whole new chapter of stress," Tom Burns says.They, too, have been played the hurricane waiting game before. “Just hunker down and enjoy our new house and hope it’s still there after the storm," he says.At this point, with boards and shutters up, and much of this area shut down, that’s all residents say they can do until Hurricane Dorian has passed. 1807

DETROIT — Brandon Zarb has a passion for food and culinary arts. He's a top chef who went from leading two of metro Detroit's busiest restaurants, Public House and Imperial, to the classroom. Zarb started working as a culinary paraprofessional educator at Rising Stars Academy in Center Line in July. He helps mentor students with intellectual disabilities."It was a spontaneous decision. It was kind of an emotional reaction to visiting the school and getting to meet Mark (Prentiss), the founder. It's just so rewarding," says Zarb.Students at the school are 18 to 26 years old. The goal is to have them gainfully employed within a couple of years. They learn valuable skills in many ways, from classrooms to a student-run restaurant, to sustainably growing greens and herbs with an aquaponics system. They also work in a full-service bake shop. Some of their products are sold in local businesses. The students are also taught workplace and life skills so they can better transition into the community after high school. Mark and Deb Prentiss founded the school six years ago. It started with 26 students and now has 125."We label everyone today in society, but we're all people," Mark Prentiss says. "We just need sometimes for people to believe in us. That's the true meaning of it, right?"Christopher Elle, 22, is a student at Rising Stars Academy. He says chef Mark Prentiss changed his life in many ways."He taught me how to be independent ... how to work in the kitchen, cook right, make good recipes," says Elle.The experience isn't just changing the students' lives, it's also making a difference for their parents and families. Janice Slattery's 19-year-old son Matthew is a student at Rising Stars Academy. He has autism and she says communication continues to be a struggle. However, even though her son just started at the school in August, she says he has changed."It's been amazing. He's shown more independence at home. He's doing tasks we didn't know he could do. His confidence level is increasing," the mother says. Twenty-seven Rising Stars Academy students are now employed. Zarb says being a part of this school's staff is incredibly rewarding."Society kind of in a sense turns their backs on these students ... to people with these types of disabilities," Zarb says. Craig Brewer was at a Waffle House in Gainesville, Florida, at nearly 3 in the morning Sunday, not far from the University of Florida campus.He was in a generous mood, walking from table to table and picking up the tab for customers' late-night meals. He handed others a bill. It wasn't the first time he's paid for strangers' meals at Waffle House, his cousin, Deborah Jenkins, told CNN.Jenkins said that the father of two was raising people's spirits early that morning and someone even posted a Snapchat video of Brewer tipping the waiters.Meanwhile, the Waffle House was getting crowded with people coming by after the nearby bars closed. Things started getting unruly, Alachua County Sheriff's Office spokesman Brett Rhodenizer told CNN, and someone called 911 to have officers settle down the crowd.Then Brewer, 41, spoke to one woman about paying for her meal, and the conversation turned sour.Another of Brewer's cousins, Rasheeda Davis, was with Brewer at the Waffle House. Davis told CNN the woman arguing with Brewer "said she would spit in his face." Davis added, "It was all petty," noting that the situation didn't appear to be extreme.But a man, Ezekiel Hicks, was with the woman arguing with Brewer, according the police report.
