You see the spellers on the stage at Scripps National Spelling Bee, but there’s a critical player in the competition who you hear more than see.Dr. Jacques Bailly is the Bee’s official pronouncer, and to the spellers, he’s a celebrity. Participants lined up to meet the man many saw in the movie, Akeelah and the Bee, and who records the words many of them have studied.“It's really kind of an honor that they all come here, and they think I’m, you know, somebody famous and interesting to meet,” says Dr. Bailly. “We're here to honor them.”Dr. Bailly has a keen understanding of what the spellers are going through. He won the Bee in 1980 and has some tips for spellers taking the stage.“The way to spell a word you don't know: you spell it the way it sounds,” he advises. “Don't make a fancy guess. Don't assume there's a silent ‘Q’ because there aren't very many of those you know just felt the way it sounds. That's kind of the best guess.”His advice for beating the jitters?“I think a deep breath is one of the best things,” he says. “It's just, you know, to feel free, to get up there and go. Because it's amazing how that helps.”He believes competing in the National Spelling Bee opens doors for spellers to worlds they’ve never seen before at a critical age.“Doors to chemistry, doors to concert instruments, doors to culture of any sort,” he says. “It's the words that describe our world.”Dr. Bailly finds satisfaction in spelling, as well as sharing his passion with the next generation.“I just love doing this,” he says. 1542

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- One person was killed and five others injured after a house caught fire in Logan Heights Sunday morning. Firefighters were called to the 3100 block of Clay Street around 4:30 Sunday morning after receiving reports of the fire. According to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, firefighters had to go inside and pull many of the victims out of the home. The condition of the other five victims is unknown at this time.According to a neighbor, a family of six lived in the home. One witness who was nearby when the fire started told 10News he could see one of the victims reaching through bars in the windows, unable to escape. At least three fire engines and dozens of firefighters responded to the blaze. At this time, it’s unclear what sparked the fire, but the metro arson strike team was called to the home to investigate. Crews blocked off a portion of Clay Street in the area due to the fire. 929

YouTube star Brooke Houts is the subject of a police investigation over a video that appears to show her abusing her Doberman.Los Angeles Police Officer Rosario Cervantes said the department's animal cruelty task force is looking into the matter but didn't offer further details.Houts posted the video to her YouTube channel, which has more than 330,000 subscribers. The video has since been taken down, though it's unclear whether that was done by her or by YouTube. However, viewers shared the video on social media, where it drew widespread criticism. In the 50-second video, Houts says she is attempting to prank her dog. "I put plastic wrap on the door. I'm gonna have him run out," she says. "We're just gonna see what he does."The video cuts, and Houts is then heard asking, "it doesn't faze you?" The dog jumps on her chest, and she responds by slapping him across the face.Later, Houts gets closer to the camera and engages in another altercation with the dog. She can be heard yelling "stop" and then appears to spit on the dog.Toward the end of the video, the dog attempts to get close to Houts' face, and she appears to lunge toward him, pushing him across the room.On Tuesday, Houts tweeted that she apologizes to anyone who has been affected negatively by the footage."Anything I say isn't going to make those who believe I'm a bad person stop believing that," she wrote. "And I'm aware of this."Houts adds that the way she appeared in the video is out of character for her."I want to clarify that I am NOT a dog abuser or animal abuser in any way, shape, or form," she wrote. "Anyone who has witnessed or heard true animal abuse will be able to clearly see that."She also denied spitting on the dog but said "I understand how it could look like I did."Houts said that her dog, Sphinx, is in need of costly one-on-one training and that she and her family are getting him a trainer.Neither Houts nor YouTube has responded to requests for comment about the incident or for details on whether there will be any repercussions on Houts' channel.According to YouTube's 2087

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego’s largest wholesale produce supplier says local restaurants would feel the effects of a possible border shutdown. Specialty Produce delivers to more than 700 San Diego restaurants and hotels seven days a week. 40 to 50 percent of the company’s produce comes from Mexico. If supplies aren’t available, prices will go up, according to owner Bob Harrington. “It’s a really bad idea really bad not to trade with Mexico,” Harrington says. Harrington sells 1,200 pounds of Mexican-grown basil a week in San Diego. If he bought the herb in the United States, the price would double. The cost of pineapples would go up 40 percent, Harrington estimates. Items like cucumbers, Roma tomatoes, strawberries, asparagus, and limes would be difficult to find without enough supply to meet the demand. “You won't get fresh limes at restaurants anymore. When you go get margarita you won't have a fresh lime in it.” “It may push restaurants over the edge. A lot of small businesses may find themselves over edge,” says Harrington.Harrington told 10News California is just getting into its avocado season, so there are supplies, but they would be more expensive with if the border closes. 1219
