SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Nature Index research database announced today that UC San Diego ranks in the top 10 worldwide among institutions researching biomedical science topics.UCSD ranked sixth among the top-200 academic institutions and ninth among healthcare institutions worldwide in biomedical sciences. The university's branch of the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research also ranked 42nd among the top biomedical science non-governmental organizations in the country. The rankings come from Nature Index, which tracks high-quality scientific research, studies and articles and the institutions with which they're associated. For the biomedical science rankings, Nature Index reviewed55 journals chosen by an unaffiliated group of scientists with articles that span from 2012 to 2018.According to Nature Index Chief Editor Catherine Armitage, biomedical science can describe a variety of research topics such a genetics, microbiology and biochemistry."Biochemistry and cell biology, and genetics are the biggest fields by article count, but microbiology and biomedical engineering, reaping rewards from CRISPR and the microbiome, are the fastest rising among the top 10 fields of research,'' Armitage said.Harvard University topped both lists of healthcare institutions.Stanford University, UC San Francisco, Yale University and University of Pennsylvania rounded out the top five among university-affiliated biomedical science institutions.Worldwide, the National Institute of Health, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Stanford and Germany's Max Planck Society flanked Harvard."These new rankings reinforce other third-party endorsements of UC San Diego's faculty and the quality of its research,'' UCSD Chancellor Pradeep Khosla said. "Our biomedical researchers continue to discover solutions to theworld's most pressing health issues.'' 1848

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Plans to replace an aging terminal at San Diego International Airport cleared a hurdle Thursday, with the Airport Authority Board's unanimous approval of the Environmental Impact Report for its major redevelopment plan. The new Terminal 1 would replace the current 53-year-old terminal, and offer 11 additional gates and upgraded amenities for passengers, including new restaurants, seating, shops and additional security checkpoints.Officials are hoping to break ground on the terminal sometime next year, with the first phase of gates anticipated to open in 2024.RELATED: Travel website ranks San Diego International as best airport in the US"Today, we took an important vote that will help ensure our airport can accommodate expected passenger growth well into the future and ensure our customers and their families are treated to a better airport experience than today's Terminal 1 can provide," said April Bolind, Airport Authority Board Chairman. "The plan will also ensure the airport can continue to function as an economic engine for the region for decades to come."The new terminal is part of a redevelopment plan that includes roadway and transportation projects that airport officials say will ease access into San Diego International, including plans for an "all-electric shuttle fleet" set to launch later this year, which would carry riders to and from the Old Town Transit Center.Airport officials say the new terminal and streamlined transportation to and from the airport will help accommodate a growing number of passengers, with around 25 million traveling through the airport last year. The next steps for the project include federal environmental review and approval from the California Coastal Commission. 1752

SAN DIEGO (CNS) -- San Diego City Council President Georgette Gomez said Monday she will propose extending the city's COVID-19-related eviction moratorium through next March.Gomez will ask for council support at Tuesday's scheduled council meeting to extend the deadline until March 31, according to a statement from her office. The city's current moratorium, which prohibits landlords from evicting renters and small businesses that are unable to cover their rent or lease payments due to financial hardship brought about by the pandemic, is slated to expire Sept. 30.Gomez says the pandemic's impacts have not yet declined enough to warrant lifting the moratorium this fall, particularly with 0 weekly federal unemployment benefits set to expire at the end of the month."When we passed the eviction moratorium in March, I hoped that six months would be enough for renters and small businesses to recover from the economic effects of COVID-19, or that our federal government would provide sufficient relief," Gomez said. "Unfortunately, the pandemic is not subsiding, unemployment remains high, many businesses are still struggling, and the federal government's response has been woefully inadequate. It is absolutely critical that we give San Diegans more time."San Diego's eviction moratorium has been extended twice since the beginning of the pandemic. The latest extension was approved last month by a 5-4 council vote. The city council has also approved .1 million in relief for renters, as well as nearly million in relief for small businesses. 1567
