SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Driving on roads in San Diego during the holiday season can be a headache, as residents and tourists alike deal with increased traffic caused by extra congestion. This year, during Thanksgiving week, the roads have been a little bit safer, according to statistics released by the California Highway Patrol. San Diego County DUI arrests and auto fatalities were both down from last year, for the time period between Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. and Friday at 6:00 a.m. Going into the weekend there have been a total of 21 DUI arrests recorded in San Diego, a decrease from 27 arrests from 2017. RELATED: Check 10News?traffic updatesThe results are also reflected across the state, where the 294 DUI arrests are down from 386 a year ago. There have been no fatal car accidents in San Diego, compared to one at this time last year. Across the state there were 17 car accidents resulting in death, compared to 19 in 2017. The CHP reports that of the 13 fatalities that occurred in their jurisdiction, five were not wearing seat belts.  1142

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Families that use their homes as vacation rentals to help survive financially are taking a significant hit.A South Bay family tells 10News the coronavirus pandemic and state Stay At Home order temporarily ended their small business."We were living the American dream until this happened about two weeks ago," said Chris Morrow.About six years ago, before the housing market got hot, Chris and her husband Marty leveraged their money and bought a home in Chula Vista.They turned the charm of the house into a small business: an Airbnb rental. It's a move that drastically changed their life. They were regularly hosting large groups and even had a wedding in the backyard. Chris said before COVID-19, their house was booked every weekend heading into spring break. Now things have changed."Nobody is booking anything for the foreseeable future," Marty said. "So right now, we don't know what to expect when it's going to happen again."At ,000-plus a night, with a two-night minimum, that loss of income they've relied on could be backbreaking."We're going through our budget and trying to find ways to cut corners," Marty said. "The expenses, of course, are lower, but our income is lower and we have to do what we can to make it."Instead of waiting to see how everything shakes out, the Morrow's are trying to use the tools they do have to make some money.Chris and Marty are currently living on their boat, something made possible from the Airbnb income.They are using the luxury of being out on the water to document their life through YouTube videos. The pair are recoding what they see along the way. "Every day, we're doing a temperature check on video, and we're also talking about our daily diary," Chris said.Some of their recent videos include an interview line outside of local Amazon building, sunrises on the bay, and what life is like living on a boat.They're hoping the videos might eventually be able to be monetized because right now, they don't know when the rental business will be back with bookings."There's just so many things going on, so diversifying is the way to go right now," Chris said.Airbnb has a section on its website answering questions for hosts and guests. 2220

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Heartwrentching video of a humpback whale tangled in fishing net off of San Diego's coast prompted wildlife experts to react quickly.But the whale's condition is unknown after rescue crews were unable to help the animal.The video was captured Friday by Domenic Biagini, owner and captain of Gone Whale Watching San Diego. What appeared to be another spectacular whale sighting turned into heartbreak."We got really excited because we saw these giant splashes," Biagini told 10News' Amanda Brandeis. "From that elation to kind of, pure heartbreak."RELATED: The world's smallest whale on the brink of extinction in the Sea of CortezNOAA and SeaWorld crews were notified of the whale. But SeaWorld said the whale was swimming too fast for them to continue rescue efforts."15,000 pound animal jumping out of the water next to a small boat that they're trying to use to rescue it is extremely dangerous, " said Biagini.Now the hope is agencies further north are able to find the whale to make sure it is freed from the netting.The face of the 30-foot whale appeared to be tangled in green fishing net. It's maddening," says Biagini. "For me. that's when I really started to get emotional because these are very sentient animals that do feel a wide range of emotions."This season, boaters are already being warned to watch out for newborn gray whales making their way from Alaska to Baja, Mexico.
