BEIJING, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- An aftershock measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale jolted Damxung County in southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region at 10:07 p.m. on Wednesday, the China Earthquake Administration said.     The epicenter was 29.8 degrees north and 90.4 degrees east, and was 9 km underground, according to the State Seismological Network.     There was no report of casualties at the epicenter but one house collapsed, according to the quake-relief headquarters.     Damxung, 82 km from Tibet's capital Lhasa, was hit by a 6.6-magnitude earthquake and a 5.2-magnitude aftershock on Monday. More than 350 armed police officials and soldiers were dispatched to attend the quake-relief work immediately after a 6.6-magnitude earthquake jolted Damxung County near Lhasa at 4:30 p.m. (Beijing Time) on Monday.    Cars were shaken for a few seconds in Yangyi Village, the worst-hit area in the first quake, but no major damage was reported in the county, according to Zhu Quan, head of the Tibet earthquake bureau.     However, Lhasa residents felt the aftershock and poured into the streets carrying food, drinking water and blankets. Some said they would spend the night outside out of safety concerns.     Dainzhen, 33, sat in his car along with his wife in the square of Ramogia Monastery. "More than 50 neighbors decided to sleep here tonight because our 20-year-old house seems not safe," he said.     However, experts said the aftershock was a natural process during the quake force recession.     Zhu said there was no need to panic.

BEIJING, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- Millions of Chinese have used this year's mid-Autumn Festival, which fell on Sunday, to get together with family and loved ones.     This year the Chinese government made the festival a three-day national holiday for the first time.     Railways and buses from Chengdu, capital in southwest China's Sichuan Province, carried 180,000 people to quake-battered cities in the province on the first day of the holiday on Saturday, according to the transport authority.     "The holiday gave us a break from work to go back home to see my parents in Shifang City, after it was hit by the earthquake in May," said a man surnamed Li, while waiting in a crowded bus terminal in Chengdu.     Radio broadcast at the terminal reported travel was difficult, because of repairs on the road or damage from the earthquake. Home-going passengers, many holding packages of mooncakes, stood waiting.     Li said the passengers shared a common understanding that the festival's tradition of family values made the trip home more meaningful, and people with painful memories of the disasters cherished such chance.     Elsewhere in the country, people preferred to share the holiday feeling at home or on short family trips to tourist spots, instead of going far for travel, according to travel agencies.     Leading Chinese travel services like China Travel Service and CCT Travel reported slack booking for Mid-Autumn travels.     A staffer at the CCT Travel's office in scenic Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in southwest China said that travel for the week-long National Day holiday in Oct. was booked up. BEIJING, July 2 (Xinhua) -- China on Wednesday pledged its support for United Nations role of safeguarding world peace and coordinating on international issues.     Chinese President Hu Jintao said in a meeting with visiting UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon that the UN shoulders increasingly important responsibilities for promoting world peace and development. China was a firm supporter and important partner of the UN, Hu told Ban, pledging that the country would fully participate in UN work, carry out its due responsibilities and maintain close communication and coordination with the UN.     Hu said China agreed with necessary and rational reform of the UN based on democratic consultation and would continue its cooperation with the UN as well as support for Ban's work in a responsible and constructive manner. China was ready to take an active part.     China fed 22 percent of the world's population using less than nine percent of the world's land.
