Farmers around the country are coming up with unique ways to make money and keep their farms thriving. They are resorting to agritourism.“Our primary income is from agritourism, not from farming and ranching,” says Dori Dejong, who is part owner of the Platte River Fort Farm.Although her land is ideal for farming, she explains it would be difficult to sustain the property on ranching alone.“We would probably only make ,000 to ,000 a year is my guess,” Dejong says.To make more money, they decided to offer a rusting stay for visitors inside a yurt, tent or even have a place to get married. They plan on making anywhere from 0,000 to 0,000 next year because of their new agritourism business model.Agritourism has become a way for farmers to keep their land. Professor Dawn Thilmany teaches a course on it, educating students on lodging management, culinary tourism, destination development and ways to make your business different than others.“We see it being anywhere from having a pick-your-own orchard or field on your farm to hosting events like farm dinners or preserving classes to dude ranches where people want to get away for a whole week or two,” Thilmany says. Not everyone is looking for an expansion as big as Dori Dejong.“Over the years we learned that our customers want a place to enjoy and experience farming,” says Amy Kafka with Garden Sweet.Kafka offers date nights and yoga classes on her flower farm and fruit farm.“The combination of all the events and things that we do bring in more people,” Kafka says.If you want to grow what matters, Dejong says “find your passion not something that’s going to make money.” 1663

Gail Devore has been on insulin for Type I Diabetes for 47 years. But in the past year, she started rationing one of her insulin prescriptions because it became too expensive.“We are dying, we are suffering complications when we have to ration or when we can't afford to fill our prescriptions and take it for the amount that prescribed to us,” Devore said. “It's unacceptable.Doctors warn against rationing meds because it can lead to health problems — and even death.“My doctor has said I will continue to stay healthy as long as I can afford to take care of myself at the level I have been all these years,” Devore said. “But with prices this high it's likely I can't. No one should have to make these kinds of decisions.”A new JAMA study found 40 of 49 top name-brand prescription drugs have had skyrocketing prices in the last six years. On average, the cost of the drugs jumped 76 percent. Most of the drugs continue to increase in price once and even twice per year. The JAMA report noted that even competition does not keep prices from rising. Popular diabetes drugs saw large price increases despite doctors being able to prescribe them interchangeably.“There has to be change. Otherwise more people will die needlessly,” Devore said. Both Congress and the Trump White House have promised to find ways to lower costs of drugs, and several bills are in the works. It’s unclear what impact those bills will have since they are still being negotiated by a divided Congress. 1488

You know, she was like 10 years old and for as what kind of person she was, she was an usher in the church. Very much, you know ... She just, just good to go. I mean, as far as violence or anything like that, she never would do that," he said.As her family continues to grieve and the small town of 5,100 residents remains in shock, there are many unanswered questions. Former US President Jimmy Carter was hospitalized on Monday following a fall at his home in Georgia, according to a statement by the Carter Center. Carter, 94, had surgery to repair a broken hip as a result from the fall. He is said to be recovering, the statement read. Carter was leaving to go turkey hunting on Monday when the fall happened. Despite his advanced age, Carter has maintained an active schedule. He continues to hold Sunday School in Georgia, and visits Habitat for Humanity projects across the country. Carter has had some health issues in recent years. In 2015, he had a "small mass" removed from his liver. During his treatment for the liver, he was diagnosed with melanoma on his brain, and would undergo treatment. Just four months later, Carter declared that he was cancer free.In 2017 while at a Habitat for Humanity project in Canada, Carter was hospitalized for dehydrated while working under the hot sun. Carter was released the next day. Carter is the oldest living former president. 1024
