SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A nurse at UC San Diego Health is turning to music when trying to connect with patients during telemedicine visits."I've always listened to music so I started teasing my patients 'hey you owe me a nurses fee' and they'd be like 'what's that?' I'd tell them it's your favorite song, a lot of people responded well and it'd help build a rapport with them." It might sound silly but Joe Bautista, nurse with UCSD for over 6 years, said it helped him build a connection with patients in ways he'd never imagine."I was like what's your favorite song? And she said 'Tennessee Whiskey' and I said why? She said 'I really need a Tennessee Whiskey' right now so that was really funny."His patients are recovering after testing positives for COVID-19. "You're on the phone with them but you also hear their stressors, and their anxiety and you want to provide them comfort," Bautista said. His job is to track and assess their progress along the way. The music part, he said, is an added bonus, "It was for me to find a connection with each of my patients to make sure I could advocate for them the best I could."He said in nursing school when patients were sick and feeling uneased, he would ask about their favorite song and their faces would light up. "They're able to talk to us freely because I'm showing interest in something that's personal to them so they can develop that trust with me." SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A judge decided Wednesday not to order a second trial for the man accused in the disappearance and murder of his stepson.Tieray Jones cried after the decision was made in the downtown courthouse.Jones was charged with killing 2-year-old Jahi Turner. Jahi was last seen at a park near Balboa Park in April 2002. Jones reported the boy missing, telling police Jahi wandered off.A mistrial was declared in for Jones on March 16.Jones was facing several charges including second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter. Two jurors found Jones guilty of murder while 10 did not. 10 jurors found Jones guilty of involuntary manslaughter and two did not.During the trial, the judge asked if jurors would be able to reach a verdict if given more time to deliberate. After Jahi disappeared, a countywide search followed. Thousands of people looked for the boy in the park and Golden Hill neighborhood. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A new poll shows that a majority of San Diegans support stricter gun laws in the U.S.A Survey USA poll released Sunday morning shows that 71 percent of those asked in San Diego support stricter gun laws while 18 percent say they oppose tighter gun restrictions.Meanwhile, 32 percent of those asked say even private gun ownership makes the country less safe while 29 percent says it makes no difference.Of those asked about safety, 76 percent of San Diegans say they worry their child could be a victim of a school shooting.RELATED: San Diegans rally for gun control in March for Our Lives eventsWhile 73 percent of people polled say they don’t know anyone who’s ever been a victim of gun violence, 27 percent of those polled say they worry a great deal about being a victim of a shooting.As far as a possible solution, 77 percent of people polled say Congress needs to do more to address gun violence. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego doctor is leading a new national study that tests drugs designed to help coronavirus patients.If you tested positive for coronavirus this summer, there was nowhere for you to go unless you were sick enough to end up in a hospital bed. The ACTIV-2 Study hopes to keep that from happening."So this trial is specifically designed to find those agents to keep people from going to the hospital," Dr. Davey Smith said. He is the Chief of Infectious Diseases at UC San Diego and the Protocol Chair for the study."If your symptoms started within ten days and your test is positive in seven days, then you are eligible for the study," Dr. Smith said.UCSD had their first patient mid-September. There are two test sites, one at UCSD and another at Kaiser's Zion Medical Center. Dr. Smith hopes to expand to six test sites."We want to test eight drugs over the next year, maybe more. There are lots of pharmaceutical companies making better and better drugs," he said the goal is to keep people healthy."If I were to get sick and I would have something to prevent me from getting sicker that's number 1. Then the next good thing is maybe instead of having an infusion we'll have a pill or we'll have an inhaler."He said they need 2,000 participants to test each drug and will use a placebo to measure it's effectiveness.A national study, led by San Diego."Hopefully we can do our home city proud," Dr. Smith said. 1442

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A pair of recent cyber-attacks on Southern California school districts has shown a new front in the war against computer criminals. Hackers have started to target schools and school districts for ransomware attacks."What they're looking for, ultimately, is money," says Kierk Sanderlin, the Head of Engineering for Check Point, a cyber-security firm.Sanderlin says the hackers will spend months using malware and fishing campaigns to gain access to computer systems. Then, when the time is right, they'll launch the ransomware attack, shutting down the system and demanding a ransom to restore access."They want to impact the environment in such a negative way, at such a critical time, that you will be willing to pay," says Sanderlin.Over the weekend, the San Bernardino School District had its servers shut down by a ransomware attack. And in August, San Dieguito Schools lost the ability for parents to register their students for classes because of an attack.Sanderlin says there have been 50 similar attacks on schools throughout the country in 2019.Sanderlin says the criminals typically want to make money from the ransom. But, he warns they can also use their access to the systems to steal the personal information of students, teachers and families.If they do that, Sanderlin says they can sell the information on the dark web, making people vulnerable to identity theft."All of that intellectual property, identification for student records, social security numbers, anything they can mine and sell on the dark web, they're going to do that," he says.School districts have become easy targets because many of them don't upgrade their cyber security frequently enough. Sanderlin compares it to fighting a modern war with antique weapons."We have to start treating cyber-security as something that's far more important than we have in the past," he says. "We can't be an ostrich sticking our head in the ground anymore. We have to realize this is important and do it the right way."He says parents need to become advocates for better cyber security, urging districts to invest in upgrades to protect their networks. He also advises people to use dark-web monitoring services. Those regularly scan the dark web to see if your personal information is for sale.Both San Bernardino and San Dieguito say their students' information was not stolen in the recent attacks.
