(KGTV) - A nine hour standoff in Bonita has finally come to an end.Deputies have taken 37-year-old James Gilbert, who was wanted for a domestic violence incident, into custody.He has been booked into San Diego Central Jail on charges of making threats with a weapon, making terrorist threats and resisting arrest.Gilbert refused to come out of the home for hours.A San Diego Sheriff's Department SWAT team brought in two BearCats, made multiple flyovers with a helicopter and even called in a bomb squad.Two blocks of Allen School lane were blocked off all day due to the incident.Witnesses say a man believed to be the suspects brother tried running past the Sheriff's tape, ignoring deputies who tried to stop him.That man was handcuffed and taken into custody.Nearby Ella B. Allen Elementary School and Daly Academy were put on heightened security in light of the crisis. Children left the campuses safely after school let out. Baseball's Cleveland Indians are going to drop their nickname after 105 years, the New York Times first reported on Sunday. In July, the Indians stated they were reconsidering their nickname. Cleveland’s baseball club have been known as the Indians since 1915. For much of that time, the Indians logo was known as “Chief Wahoo,” but in recent years has been mostly phased out. The Indians wore the logo for the final time in 2018.Activists say that the Indians and Redskins nicknames promote ethnic stereotyping.The National Congress of American Indians has been opposed to nicknames such as the Indians and Redskins, as it wrote in a 2013 report.Before the 2020 NFL season, Washington's football team dropped the "Redskins" nickname, and has gone by the "Washington Football Team" moniker."The professional sports industry, specifically the National Football League (NFL), Major League Baseball (MLB), and the National Hockey League (NHL) and the leagues’ team owners have failed to address the racist origins of deplorable race based marketing strategies of the past," the report read. "Often citing a long held myth by non-Native people that “Indian” mascots “honor Native people,” American sports businesses such as the NFL’s Washington “Redsk*ns” and Kansas City “Chiefs,” MLB’s Cleveland “Indians” and Atlanta “Braves,” and the NHL’s Chicago Black Hawks, continue to profit from harmful stereotypes originated during a time when white superiority and segregation were common place."Each of these professional sports businesses attempt to establish a story of honoring Native peoples through the names or mascots; however, each one—be it through logos or traditions (e.g., fight songs, mascots, human impersonators, and fan culture)—diminishes the place, status, and humanity of contemporary Native citizens. What is true about many of the brand origin stories is that team owners during the birth of these brands hoped to gain financially from mocking Native identity. As a result, these businesses perpetuated racial and political inequity. BALTIMORE — The University of Maryland, Baltimore has suspended an experiment they were conducting after reports indicate they were denying pain relief to animals they were operating on.  The university confessed they were forced to stop their experiment because they failed to comply with multiple federal regulations, according to the national watchdog group SAEN, or Stop Animal Exploitation NOW!, which monitors U.S. research facilities for illegal activity and animal abuse.While the details about the experiment are still limited, documents from UMB reveal the project was suspended because animals were repeatedly denied pain relief after surgeries, they were not given proper time to recover after surgeries, the staff did not euthanize them after they reached their endpoints and the staff did not properly keep records. In a letter to the University of Maryland Board of Regents, SAEN said animals were not given any pain relief during a procedure involving cardiac arrest, and instead of giving the animals a three- to seven-day recovery period, they were given up to 24 hours. It also said animals were inspected by veterinarians and one animal required euthanasia, but was kept alive. All of this was discovered during multiple separate lab inspections done by UMB research administration. The letter also says during those inspections, the lab was notified of the serious consequences of not providing pain relief to the animals, but still did not get the necessary medications by the time another inspection took place, even though a surgery was going on at the time of the second inspection. After another unannounced inspection, changes were still not made, so the experiment was suspended on October 25. Now, SAEN is urging for UMB to do further research of abuse, terminate the project and refund all of the project support, .9 million, to the federal government. "This failed experiment must be terminated immediately,” said Michael A. Budkie, a co-founder and executive director of SAEN.  "The idea that a principal investigator repeatedly violated their own protocol and denied pain relief to animals indicates a total disregard for proper scientific procedures and total contempt for the authority of UMB Research Administration." SAEN is also calling for the results of the research to not be published because protocol was not followed.  2477
