ABERDEEN — Amber Pleasant wears a smile on her face while she and her husband Jerome Pleasant read to their daughters Amaya, 3, and Amara, 2. Nine-month-old August sleeps peacefully in her lap.Behind that smile hides a lot of worries and concerns, not only about Amber’s future, but the future of her family.“I have six pairs of eyes watching me. If I start to cry or break down, they’ll start to worry,” she said.Amber has plenty to worry about. A day after her interview with WMAR, she was scheduled to have a bilateral mastectomy. She was diagnosed with breast cancer six months ago at the age of 37, a disease she says runs in her family.“It was a big shock that it would happen to someone this young,” she said. “I mean, you always see it, but you don’t think it will happen to you this young.”Amber says she feels the pressure to be strong, not just for her three youngest children, but also her three older daughters from a previous marriage. She says they don’t often talk about the odds.“We just focus on the positive and the good things and we don’t really think about the negative,” she said.This is not the Pleasant family’s first run-in with cancer. In 2005, Jerome was diagnosed with cancer in his jaw. Doctors had to remove part of his cheek and jaw bone and his teeth. Radiation damaged his right eye and he must now wear an eye patch.His cancer diagnosis came not long after his 18-month-old daughter Talia, from his previous marriage, was also diagnosed with cancer.“Father and daughter were battling cancer at the same time, receiving treatments at the same time and receiving surgeries at one time,” Amber said.Talia died a few years later at the age of 4. A couple of years later, Jerome was diagnosed with glioblastoma, a type of brain cancer. He was treated only to have it return a couple of years later. In all, Jerome has had more than 20 surgeries since 2005, and the chemo and radiation have caused other disabilities like epilepsy.So when Amber found out she had breast cancer, she says she couldn't believe cancer was hitting their family yet again. All she could think about was her children.“I can’t imagine all six of my children not having their mother and it scares me to think that that could happen,” she said. “So I fight every single day, through every single chemo and through every single procedure.”The medical bills quickly began to pile up. Amber says they log a lot of miles between Baltimore and Bel Air, Maryland, where Jerome and she are treated, respectively. She says the family car barely fits the entire family and has become an unreliable mode of transportation.Amber says they realized pretty quickly that they needed to ask for help.“We don’t want anyone to think that we can’t take care of our children and so that’s why we’ve never asked for help before," she said. "We don’t want anyone to think that we can’t do this and that we can’t provide for them and we can’t take care of them.”She says the Harford County community has stepped up tremendously, especially former high school classmates and teachers. Both she and Jerome say it has been a huge source of support and strength for them, and so has their faith.“Faith is a driving force in my life,” Jerome said. “It motivates me to get up every day.”“We’ve run out of resources so we’re very grateful to the Harford County community that has come forward to help our family because without them, I don’t know what we would be doing right now,” Amber said.Amber’s bilateral mastectomy went well and she’s now recovering. All it takes is one event to potentially spread the coronavirus to hundreds of people, directly or indirectly. That is what played out in August at a wedding reception in Maine, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.All told, the CDC identified 177 coronavirus cases and seven fatalities linked to a wedding in Maine.Here is how the CDC explained what took place:On August 8, one day after the wedding, a guest from the wedding began feeling ill with coronavirus symptoms. This person, however, did not get tested for the virus until August 13.Meanwhile, another attendee of the wedding began feeling ill on August 8 and 9 with a fever, chills, cough, myalgia, runny nose, and headache. This person, a health care worker at a long-term care facility, worked on August 11 and 12. The CDC says this person was tested for the coronavirus on August 13 and received a positive result on August 18.The Maine CDC began monitoring the facility on August 21, and over the course of several weeks, 14 staff members and 24 residents tested positive for the coronavirus. The CDC said that six residents died and three others were hospitalized from the coronavirus.On August 11, four days after attending a wedding attended by 55 people, two attendees began experiencing general coronavirus symptoms, including fever, cough and sore throat. On August 12, they received the results of a positive coronavirus test.The next day, three more people tested positive for the virus, which prompted an investigation by Maine public health officials.Of the 55 guests, 27 tested positive for the coronavirus. In addition, two people working the wedding and a diner who was not a wedding guest, tested positive for the coronavirus.Through contact tracing, officials in Maine discovered an additional 27 cases in the community. While none of the wedding guests died, a person who came in contact with a wedding attendee died from the virus.The CDC said that a corrections employee who worked from August 15-19 and also attended the wedding tested positive for the coronavirus, along with four other employees. By September 1, 18 additional prison staff members and 46 inmates tested positive for the virus. In all, there were 82 cases at the correctional facility, none resulting in any deaths.The wedding reception venue took several precautions including temperature checks and requiring masks, but the CDC said that guests disregarded the mask requirement. The venue also broke the state requirement that wedding receptions be kept to a maximum of 50 guests amid the pandemic.“Community gatherings such as weddings, birthday parties, church events, and funerals have the potential to be SARS-CoV-2 super-spreading events,” the CDC said. “Increased transmission risk at such events might result from failure to maintain physical distancing and inconsistent use of masks. Transmission risk is further increased when events are held indoors.”The Maine wedding has been far from the only wedding tied to a super-spreader event. Earlier this week, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo slammed those holding large gatherings after 34 people became infected after attending an Oct. 17 wedding that had 113 guests. New York also has a restriction of wedding receptions attended by more than 50 people."As we have seen in weddings and similar events across the country during this pandemic, large gatherings can easily be super-spreader events, too often with dire consequences. Hosting one of these events after all New York has been through is obnoxious and irresponsible - not to mention illegal," Cuomo said. After months of protests, sometimes becoming violent, Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler announced Thursday that the city is banning the use of tear gas by his city’s police.Wheeler said everyone has an obligation to create change, and now is the time to change the city’s policy on using tear gas.“During the last hundred days Portland, Multnomah County and State Police have all relied on CS gas where there is a threat to life safety,” Wheeler said. “We need something different. We need it now.“Arson, vandalism, and violence are not going to drive change in this community. I expect the police to arrest people who engage in criminal acts. I expect the District Attorney to prosecute those who commit criminal acts. And I expect the rest of the criminal justice system to hold those individuals accountable. A young boy who was abandoned at a Goodwill drop-off in Mississippi is now with Child Protective Services and police have at least one suspect in custody.Southaven police posted on social media Monday about the boy, who they believe is about 2 years old. They told WREG he had a change of clothes, some food and a note written on a paper towel that read, “child abandoned … no phone number for mom.”Southaven is just south of Memphis across the Mississippi border.The boy was unable to give his name or the names of any parents or relatives to officers, and they posted to social media asking the public for help identifying any relative or possible suspects.Later Monday afternoon, police said they received numerous tips in addition to surveillance video."Southaven Police received numerous tips, and with the assistance of F.B.I. offices in both Mississippi, and Tennessee, along with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department a suspect related to this case was taken into custody in Memphis at approximately 15:30 hours.
