SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – County leaders Wednesday approved a plan that would allow San Diego businesses such as gyms and local places of worship to operate outdoors at county parks.The new initiative gives businesses another option as they look to operate amid the coronavirus pandemic. Last month, the state implemented restrictions that forced many businesses to either close completely or move outdoors.Under the plan, space at any of the county’s 30 parks could be used for service via a free permit.“We need to be creative and provide a lot of flexibility, particularly to churches, places of worship, gyms, and other fitness-oriented businesses,” said County Supervisor Dianne Jacob, who proposed the plan.Jacob said of the process to obtain permits: “I’m asking the county to streamline the process so it’s a very quick turnaround.”She added the process is similar to Poway’s, a city with a similar plan already in place.San Diegan Joel Nevarez visits San Diego’s Waterfront Park off Harbor Drive every morning for his workout because he enjoys it and the park was one of his only options."Getting some sunlight is good for you. I get some fresh air since I work from home, so I like it,” he told ABC 10News.Nevarez’s gym is one of many businesses that shut down amid COVID-19 restrictions. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Before taking children trick-or-treating this Halloween, families are encouraged to visit The Megan's Law Website where hundreds of registered sex offenders are listed across San Diego. The search tool allows families to look up registered sex offenders in their neighborhood or other parts around the state and see them on a map."Megan’s Law also authorizes local law enforcement agencies to notify the public about sex offender registrants found to be posing a risk to public safety," the site says.The map lists markers surrounding the address used in the search.  Users can input any address and radius for a broader search. Information includes images of the sex offender, known aliases, addresses, description of the person, offenses, and a risk assessment.According to website, some of the registrants are currently in violation of their registration requirements and asks the public to contact police with information they may have about these individuals.The website was created and named after 7-year-old Megan Kanka, of New Jersey, who was brutally raped and killed in 1994 by her neighbor, Jesse Timmendequas.  Timmendequas had been convicted for sexually assaulting young girls.  After serving less than a year in a correctional facility, he  moved into a home across the street from the family without their knowledge. "In the wake of that tragedy, the Kankas sought to have local communities warned about sex offenders in the area. All states in the U.S. now have some form of Megan's Law," the website says.The website indicates that some of the registrants are currently in violation of their registration requirements. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Dance is a way to lose yourself and escape. For students taking the Ballet for Me! Class at the San Diego Civic Youth Ballet School in Balboa Park, dance is their escape.“I just love it cause it like brings me joy and it can take me to my happy place,” said Renata Scorza-Muniz.Renata has been taking regular ballet classes since she was 2 years old. But in February, her life changed.“It’s stressful, I guess, to be in the hospital,” said Renata.Renata was diagnosed with cancer, causing her to lose her vision and forcing her out of her regular ballet class.That’s when she turned to a class called Ballet for Me.“It’s just so fun to do,” said Renata.Ballet for Me is a tuition-waved class that is designed for kids with unique physical needs. Each student in the class gets paired up with a mentor to help guide them through each movement.“It just makes me so happy when I get to see students feel happy and free in class,” said Kerri DeNies instructor and creator of the class.This dance class helps the kids feel whole again. And all year they rehearse for their moment to shine and perform in front of a packed audience where they feel a little more joy and beam with confidence. 1213

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — County health officials say 12 new flu-related deaths have been recorded in the last week, as cases also trend upward.The new influenza deaths included a 34-year-old East County woman with an underlying medical condition who died from influenza A, according to the County Health and Human Services Agency. This season, there have been 32 deaths in the county related to the flu, compared to 24 deaths at this time last season.The county says 2,292 local lab-confirmed cases were also reported last week. In comparison, only 487 confirmed cases were reported during the same week last year. This season's to-date total sits at 9,919 cases, passing the 9,655 cases reported all of last season.RELATED: Influenza B causing high number of pediatric flu deaths this season“The number of deaths and cases being reported are a sign that influenza is not easing up,” said Wilma Wooten, county public health officer. “Vaccination is the best defense we have against the flu. People who have not gotten immunized should do it now.”County medical experts recommend residents protect themselves against the virus by frequently washing their hands, cleaning commonly touched surfaces and avoiding contact with sick people.The flu vaccine is available at local doctors' offices, pharmacies, and public health centers. A list of locations offering flu shots can be found on the county's immunization website or by calling 211 for the county's health hotline.Local health officials and the CDC recommends everyone 6 months and older receive a vaccine, especially those at higher risk of complications from the flu such as pregnant women, people with chronic medical conditions, and locals 65 or older. 1712
