SAN DIEGO (AP) — A California tribe whose ancestral lands span across the U.S.-Mexico border is suing the Trump administration to block construction of a section of border wall that the Kumeyaay people say is desecrating sacred burial sites. The La Posta Band of Diegueno Mission Indians filed the lawsuit in federal court in San Diego on Tuesday seeking to temporarily halt construction of the wall until the tribe can protect its religious and cultural heritage. La Posta is one of 12 bands of the Kumeyaay people. The tribe wants its members to be able to monitor work and interrupt it to recover human remains and cultural items uncovered during construction. SAN DIEGO — Home construction in the city of San Diego increased in 2019, but is still far off pace to meet the region's high demand for housing.The findings come in a report released Tuesday by the city's planning department.It shows that in 2019 the city issued 5,221 permits for new housing units, up from 3,895 the year before. SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – A wildlife overpass near Salt Lake City is proving to be successful at helping animals safely migrate over a busy interstate.The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (UDWR) hailed the Parley's Canyon overpass a success in a recent Facebook post, saying it has also helped motorists stay much safer as well.In its Facebook post, UDWR included video that show many animals using the overpass to safely cross to the other side of Interstate 80. Cameras set up along the bridge captured moose, bears, porcupines, squirrels, mountain lions, deer, coyotes, and other critters.The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) and Utah State University have been monitoring the overpass throughout the year.The overpass opened in December 2018. UDOT says it spans six lanes of interstate and was constructed to improve safety on I-80 by reducing wildlife and vehicle collisions.UDOT coordinated with UDWR on the wildlife issues specific to the project, including wildlife migration patterns.While it may be tempting to visit the bridge in an attempt to spot some critters, UDWR says to keep off the overpass and not disturb the animals. 1154

SAN DIEGO — Democratic Congressman Mike Levin appears poised to keep his seat in the House of Representatives, according a scientific poll released Tuesday.The ABC-10News Union-Tribune poll showed Levin ahead of Republican Brian Maryott 49 to 37 in the 49th Congressional District, which stretches from Del Mar into southern Orange County. Levin, a first-term Congressman, defeated Republican Diane Harkey in 2018, flipping the seat longheld by Republican Darrell Issa, who decided not to seek re-election amid changing voter demographics. "We're going to do everything we can to leave no stone unturned for the next 50 days or so to make sure that we keep the 49th this coming November," Levin said. Democrats now outnumber Republicans in the district by about 3 percent. The SurveyUSA poll shows, however, that 13 percent of Republicans surveyed said they planned to vote for Levin. Meanwhile, just 2 percent of Democrats said they'd support Maryott. "If it was 25 percent or higher I would say something's going on," said political analyst John Dadian. "(Levin's) been an incumbent for two years, his challenger is an elected official but not in a good majority of the region."Maryott said it was still early in the race and that he and his campaign are working to get their message out. "People are just really starting to tune in now. Obviously Mike has name recognition that we don't, but we're out there talking to people everyday," said Maryott.
