SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Sunday morning's rain caused crashes on roadways, damage to construction zones and danger in Sunset Cliffs.One of those crashes had Cristal Ramirez in the passenger seat. "I was supposed to drive for brunch but my friend picked us up and I was glad because I didn't want to drive in the rain," she said.She said as they took the connector from the 163 to the I-8 West they started sliding, "I think we were driving a little too fast because of the rain." Ramirez said they grazed the guardrail. The tires were out of alignment, making it necessary to call for a tow truck."We were like what the heck this is wild!" She said.The group didn't let the accident ruin their afternoon, they continued on in Ramirez's car to Sunset Cliffs.The danger still lurking behind yellow caution tape, draped along the edge of one part of the cliff. From where she and her two friends stood, you could see the cliff carved away underneath the seemingly solid edge."I didn't think about it, I was like 'Oh we're close to the edge.' and we started playing around and I was like, 'Oh we probably shouldn't be playing this close to the edge," Ramirez said when she realized the danger.South of Sunset Cliffs, another problem at the Silver Strand State Beach exit off SR 75. The rain caused metal plates covering trenches in a construction area to bend inward.Crews rushed out to reinforce the plates to make them safe, adding wood supports. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Drug Enforcement Agency launched a summer project drilling down on factors leading to violent crime across the nation. It is called Project Safeguard.Special Agent in Charge of the San Diego district, John Callery, said, "over 75% of those [violent] crimes are driven to get money to buy drugs."He said drugs and crime go hand in hand. "When a person devolves into a drug addict unfortunately they become very desperate right? And a desperate person will do desperate things to get money and buy drugs."Callery said his team geared up to knock out 15 cases with violent criminals. The arrests happened from August to October."We took a three month, for lack of a better word, a surge. Let’s get violent actors off the street. Let’s arrest them, DEA, and let’s charge them federally." Callery said they arrested 34 criminals.He added they have a lot of evidence to go through as well, "we’ve seized 71 firearms and... seized 160 kilograms of heroin and 160 kilograms of fentanyl."He hopes the arrests lead to hundreds more and reveal kingpins in the Mexican Drug Cartels."We’re a border town and we have a huge responsibility here to try and stop drugs from entering the United States because 75% of all drugs enter right here in our area and go to the rest of the United States." Callery said he is incredibly proud of his teamHe said five agents were infected with the novel coronavirus since March and have recovered. He said they haven't stopped working through the pandemic.Callery said his next big task is National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on October 24th. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The largest employer in the country is waving away a long standing tradition. Walmart is planning to phase out its greeters at more than 1,000 stores across the country. The retail giant says it is moving forward with a new role called “customer host” that is more physically demanding. The hosts will still greet people but must also be able to pass physical exams including lifting a 25-pound box and climbing ladders. Critics say the move targets their elderly and disabled employees, which make up a significant portion of the company’s greeters. “I can’t do that,” said Adam Catlin, who has cerebral palsy and has worked as a Walmart greeter for a decade. Walmart says it is striving to place greeters in other jobs at the company and the title of greeter will be officially eliminated April 26. “I want to keep my job past April 26 because I have made a lot of good friends and a lot of good memories over the years,” added Catlin. Walmart has not said how many greeters will lose their jobs but adds it is, “extending the current 60-day greeter transition period for associates with disabilities while we explore the circumstances and potential accommodations, for each individual, that can be made within each store.” 1252

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The FBI said a bank robber who held up a US Bank in Rolando last week struck again Friday in La Mesa. Surveillance photos show a man entering the Wells Fargo Bank inside the Vons grocery store at 8011 University Ave. in La Mesa just before noon. The man pretended to talk on his phone before demanding money from the teller, agents said. He also threatened “to shoot” if he didn’t receive money, according to the FBI. After approaching the first counter, the man approached several tellers in an effort to get more cash, said investigators. The man spoke to tellers Aug. 15 during the US Bank robbery inside the Vons at 6155 El Cajon Blvd. “Grab a bag. Start with your 100s. Put all the money in the bag and give it to me or I'm gonna [sic] shoot,” the man said, according to agents. A helicopter searched the area near the Wells Fargo Friday afternoon but could not find the man. La Mesa Police said the man is 5’8”, in his mid-20s to early 30s, and has a tattoo of a cross on his forearm. Anyone with information about the robberies was asked to call the FBI. 1088

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The aunt of a Marine who was rescued after an amphibious assault vehicle accident Thursday off the coast of San Clemente Island says he is recovering well.Catrina Tomamichel said her nephew Dallas, 22, drowned before his brothers in arms rescued him."They pulled him out of the water, my understanding is there is someone, I don't know their name but I want to say thank you, they gave him CPR," says Tomamichel.She said he was airlifted to the hospital and he's now recovering at Balboa Naval Medical Center. She said he is able to walk and already asking to go back to work. It's pretty difficult to lose your family and they are family," says Tomamichel.Thursday night, five Marines were rescued after the training accident and are back on their assigned ship.
