In the months since last November's election, the Merriam-Webster dictionary has been on overdrive.It's transformed itself into a cheeky, fact-checking machine. And in the process, it's struck social gold (more than half a million Twitter followers and counting).On Monday, the dictionary released more than 250 new words and definitions. True to its fresh image, the list includes several words that, in this new political and social climate, have taken on a different meaning.Consider "troll."Originally, it was a noun used to describe a dwarf or giant in Scandinavian folklore. The new definition that Merriam-Webster added is a verb: "to antagonize (others) online by deliberately posting inflammatory, irrelevant, or offensive comments or other disruptive content."How about "dog whistle?"Once upon a time, it was what it said: a whistle for dogs inaudible to humans. INDIANAPOLIS -- A Bloomington, Indiana auto dealership was told to stop selling cars after the Indiana Secretary of State's Office discovered the business is not licensed in the state. The secretary of state's office issued a cease and desist Friday to H Auto for selling cars without a license and illegally issuing interim license plates.H Auto has been advertising in English and Chinese and allegedly may have been targeting Chinese students at Indiana University, according to the secretary of state. The advertisements say to make an appointment because H Auto does business by appointment only, but typically most dealerships do walk-in business.Some customers of H Auto allege that they were sold cars with fake New Jersey license plates.Others allege the auto dealer took their money but they never got a title for the vehicle they purchased.The secretary of state's office and Bloomington police are currently investigating.If you believe you may have been victimized by H Auto, call the secretary of state's office at 317-234-7190 1074

It’s no secret we have a connection, possibly obsession, with our smartphones. Often, it’s the first thing we see when we wake up and the last thing before we go to bed. A recent survey wanted to find out what Americans would be willing to sacrifice to keep their phones.About 40 percent of participants would rather be separated from their dog for a month, than be separated from their smartphone for that long.Slightly more, 42 percent, would rather be separated from their significant other than their device for a month. Although, after months of a pandemic and stay-at-home orders, we could all use some space.More than 60 percent would be willing to give up coffee for a month instead of their phone, and 72 percent would rather give up wine for a month.OK, sure, but what about enduring sometimes annoying or awkward situations. About 44 percent would rather serve five days of jury duty than be without their device for five days. And 47 percent would rather stay with their in-laws for a month, than give up their smartphone for a month.The survey was conducted by SimpleTexting, looking at results from 1,000 smartphone users across the country.On the brightside, these are just hypothetical, and there does not appear to be any effort to take away smartphones. Is it safe to get together for the holidays? As Thanksgiving approaches, many people are having those discussions, and many are desperate to not only see family, but to travel.Zane Kerby, President and CEO of the American Society of Travel Advisors said, “People are itching to get out there.”The nonprofit organization represents 15,000 travel advisers across the U.S. They often poll consumers and recently learned that people are craving a change of scenery.“People have said, 'You know what? I want to go five, six, seven hours away,'” Kerby said. “They want to do that aspirational trip that they’ve been thinking about before the pandemic and now they really want to do it.”And they're talking about Thanksgiving and wondering whether they should drive or fly.“We asked people point blank what are you going to do for Thanksgiving?” Kerby said. “We’re encouraged, only 15% who normally travel said they weren’t sure they were going to fly this year. Kerby said that there is pent up demand for travel, and there is optimism in the industry.But, if you're talking about getting together, doctors stress that you do so safely.“All of these decisions are weighing risks and benefits and I wish I had a crystal ball,” said Dr. Beth Thielen, an assistant professor of pediatrics at The University of Minnesota Medical School. Dr. Thielen also is an infectious disease doctor. “I wish I could tell you what’s going to happen but I can’t, but I can tell you riskier things and safer things and appreciate that even the most precautions don’t eliminate your risk either.”“I think identifying if you or someone you’re hoping to gather with has those underlying conditions, that you maybe need to be extra cautious about preventing exposures,” she added.Of course, everyone wants to get together and realizes the importance of family.Dr. Thielen advises to limit the number of people, assess your own risk and that of those whom you're considering visiting. She recommends thinking about limiting your exposure to other people in the weeks before you travel.“All of these infections have an incubation period,” Thielen said. “You’re exposed to somebody with the infection taking root but not manifesting itself or detectable by testing for COVID. It’s a few days a week or so before that exposure happens.”We're learning a lot about COVID-19. We know outside is better. Masks are important. And we now know it affects people differently.Kerby said if you're considering flying, know that the industry is taking extreme precautions for travelers.“Between the HEPA filters they use on planes, electrostatic and defogging they're doing after every flight, the air on an airplane is probably better than the air in your home,” Kerby said.While there is a lot of discussion to be had about the holidays and travel, if you can do it safely, everyone wins. 2853
