Celebrity chef Michael Symon, a Cleveland native, returned home recently, discussed how his passion for his hometown has served the city well./p>With three Cleveland hot spots—Lola, Mabel's BBQ and B Spot—Symon knows how to cook up a good meal and time.The Cleveland-born chef, restaurateur and TV host is spicing things up again with a new role: Good Morning America's resident chef."I'll be doing for the most part weekly cooking segments and hosting some other cooking segments when people are coming on," he said. "It would take me like an hour of hot water and Aleve to get them going again, and from changing how I eat, about 85% of that pain is gone." He has helped plant the seeds of what's grown into a world-class culinary scene here."A lot of Cleveland people move back home," he said. "Maybe they were in New York, or San Francisco, Chicago or LA and they see a vibrant food scene here and realize they can move back and be a chef here." He says the people and product are the key ingredients."We have the greatest produce in the world," he said. "We have the greatest beef in the world. The greatest pork in the world. You know, farm to table has become a thing nationwide, but farm to table has existed here as long as I've cooked. We just didn't call it that. We just called the farmer and they brought it to our table," he laughed. "So, I think the ability to get the products that we're able to get here, there aren't many places in America that can do what we do." Symon says they're adding a new BBQ sauce at Mable's. A mustard-vinegar sauce is his Cleveland staple. They call it "Cleveland BBQ sauce."He says the new one is a sweet, tomato-based sauce that will be called, "Not Cleveland BBQ sauce!"When asked about his cannot-miss stops when he's in town, Symon says he has a lot of great chef friends and peers he greatly admires, but said he has a lot of respect for Karen Small, the owner and executive chef of Flying Fig."She's a spectacular human being, a spectacular chef, and she sources product like no other," said Symon. DELTA, Colo. – On the Western Slope of Colorado – like many other communities across the country – sits a county where coal mining has employed thousands of people for the past century. However, in the past decade, multiple mines have shut down. Mateusz Pena is an engineering manager with Delta-Montrose Electric Association – a rural not-for-profit cooperative. He says coal energy production isn’t cost competitive anymore. “A lot of times they have to take this coal and rail it out on trains and get it to wherever it’s going. Somehow that’s not as economical as it used to be,” said Pena. The loss of employment and training opportunities hit the community hard. Science teacher Ben Graves says coal mines were the primary trade pathway for students in the area for generations. “Coal’s advantage was that it was cheap. It might be a little dirty, but it was cheap. Now, coal’s not as cheap,” Graves said. When the mines shut down, many families packed their bags to find opportunity elsewhere, but others are embracing the change. “There’s definitely a national trend in wanting to engage students in more project-based learning that’s authentic," Graves said. "That’s not just ‘hey let’s do a project for the sake of learning a concept’, but ‘let’s actually address a problem in our community or school.'” As the coal industry continues to decline, renewable energy is rapidly growing. “It’s an emerging industry right now and it’s going to continue to be more and more prevalent,” Pena said. Students now have the chance to play a role in a different type of energy production; students at Delta High School are part of a Solar Energy Training Program led by Graves. In addition to teaching students about general renewable energy work, they’re learning how to install, design and maintain solar arrays through hands-on experience. And at the end of the class, they get a vocational certificate as a solar electric installer. “Everybody knows math and English, but this is a trade skill that we are one step further knowing than most people,” said Delta High School Senior Hannah Philman. Philman and her classmate Xavier Baty both have family that have worked in the coal mines. Even though his grandfather died from a lung disease caused by long-term exposure to coal dust, Xavier says he thought he wanted to continue his family’s coal-mining legacy. But then he was forced to try the solar program. “Even though I didn’t want to be in it, I love the fact that I’m still in it because it teaches me about things I would have never known about. I would have probably gone off to the mines and ended up like my grandpa,” Baty said. Now, Baty says he could see himself working in the renewable energy sector. Both he and Philman say they love the collaborative nature of the solar program and the hands-on work outside. Graves is now designing a program that other schools across the nation can use. As the renewable energy industry grows, the goal is to provide a workforce ready to support it.“As economies change, rather than being reactive, it’s more it’s being proactive. Days before a gun rights protest that is set to take place this weekend at the Virginia Capitol, Gov. Ralph Northam declared an emergency, which will ban protesters from entering the grounds around the Capitol with firearms. The emergency, which was declared by executive order, will span Friday, January 17 at 5:00 p.m. until Tuesday, January 21 at 5:00 p.m.“Law enforcement intelligence analysts have identified credible threats of violence surrounding the event, along with white nationalist rhetoric and plans by out-of-state militia groups to attend,” said a statement from Northam’s office. Northam tweeted that the order was to protect citizens and lawmakers. “We support citizens’ rights to peacefully protest and express their views to their elected officials. But we must also keep the public, as well as those who work around Capitol Square, safe,” the governor tweeted.Northam, a Democrat elected in 2018, now enjoys partisan support from the Virginia House and Senate. Following the 2019 election, Democrats have the majority in the Virginia House of Delegates for the first time in more than two decades. With Democrats holding the bicameral legislature, there has been a push to enact gun control. CLEVELAND, Ohio – Four defendants accused in thousands of lawsuits over the opioid epidemic reached a settlement Monday, averting a high-profile trial that was just hours away from starting.The settlement was reached between four pharmaceutical companies -- McKesson Corp., Cardinal Health Inc, AmerisourceBergen Corp. and Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. -- and two counties in Ohio, Summit and Cuyahoga counties.McKesson Corp., Cardinal Health Inc. and AmerisourceBergen Corp. will pay out a combined 5 million immediately, and Teva Pharmaceutical will pay million, officials said at a press conference Monday.The deal was struck between midnight and 1 a.m. Monday, and the case was dismissed with prejudice, US District Court Judge Dan Polster said.The defendants were supposed to appear in a Cleveland court Monday in the first federal multidistrict litigation (MDL) trial involving the opioid epidemic.MDL is similar to class-action lawsuits in the sense that both consolidate plaintiffs' pretrial proceedings, for the sake of efficiency.
