Although real trees keep your home looking festive throughout the month of December, they also pose a fire risk. Between 2013 and 2017, fire departments across the country responded to an average of 160 house fires that started with Christmas trees per year, according to the National Fire Protection Agency. Those fires caused an average of three deaths, 15 injuries and million in direct property damage annually. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - When William Hauf looks out his kitchen window, he sees rows of patio furniture that won't fit anywhere else."I just had to leave that stacked up out there," he says. "And I've got boxes of books in my garage right now that are unopened and brand new. Books that I haven't even seen yet."They're leftovers from Hauf's former, more successful life.In March, he sold his estate in Santaluz for million. Hauf had to sell it after losing millions of dollars himself in real estate and travel investments. It's a key number because that's what San Diego Gas and Electric says he still owes them from his Santaluz home. Hauf got that roughly ,000 bill in March - an annual balance correction because the Santaluz home had solar, meaning he didn't have to pay monthly. SDG&E is now threatening to cut the electricity to his new home in Carlsbad if he doesn't pay the balance. "It's a nightmare, and I have no power to be able to confront this," Hauf said. SDG&E checked Hauf's meter in 2018, after a roughly ,000 annual bill. He said he hoped they would do more at the time. "They didn't investigate, they didn't identify, they didn't do an audit, they didn't do any of that," he said. Then came the ,000 whopper in March. In a statement, SDG&E noted that Hauf's bill worked out to 2 a month for the 7,600 square-foot Santaluz home. The company said it found no issues with the meter and that something in the home was being left on for long periods of time. SDG&E says it has advised Hauf to make sure his pool pump was not left running but Hauf said there's a big problem with that advice."There's no pool in the house," he said. "There's no swimming pool, there's no heater, there's no air conditioning."In other words, Hauf can't pinpoint what caused his annual bill to get to ,000 dollars, and he doesn't think SDG&E can either. A spokesman for SDG&E said the utility isn't always privy to the types of appliances customers have, but reiterated that Hauf's meter was functioning normally during that time. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Two fires sparked Saturday afternoon in East County, in addition to a thunderstorm in Pine Valley, created dicey conditions for firefighters.Cal Fire Captain Thomas Shoots said the humidity made a huge difference, "the monsoonal moisture the stickiness has been good because it's helped keep our fires small," slowing the spread of flames.The Bratton Fire sparked in Lawson Valley around 1:30 p.m. and scorched 4 acres. Then around 2:10 p.m., the Sloane Fire started burning in Dehesa, blackening 18 acres.Both were knocked down quickly."We hope that people don't get complacent that we've hit these fires very aggressively and it's worked out," Shoots said.He said if we didn't have the humidity we would be in trouble, "there's a lot of fuel that comes with a good winter so that grass crop is all cured out and ready to burn."Shoots said they were keeping their eye on the thunderstorm in Pine Valley.The National Weather Service reported a severe thunderstorm warning with quarter-sized hail and gusts up to 60 miles per hour."We knew it wasn't going to be to the extent that the north saw when the storms rolled through but it was still definitely a potential concern," Shoots said.Looking forward, Shoots says we need to be very careful, "San Diego and a good chunk of California is sitting at a higher potential for wildfire activity in October-November."He advises creating defensible space around your home not only to protect your home but protect your family if you can't escape in time.Shoots said he hopes firefighters are able to get a handle on the fires in Northern California and stay safe.He said 96% of all Cal Fire engines are working, which shows how extreme this fire season is.More than half of Cal Fire San Diego's resources have been sent up north to help, including 32 engines. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Across San Diego County, most law enforcement agencies have been focusing on education rather than enforcement regarding violations of the county’s public health order.The goal is to get people to comply voluntarily.“What we’re trying to do here is educate the public so that ultimately we can save lives,” said San Diego Sheriff, Bill Gore.In the City of Coronado, police have been offering people free facial coverings.“To approach folks in an enforcement posture, I’m not sure we’re going to get the type of compliance we need,” said Coronado Police Chief Chuck Kaye. “When we see folks that are not using face coverings we say ‘hey can we offer you a face covering?’”This Fourth of July weekend is expected to be busy, especially at local beaches.California Gov. Gavin Newsom ordered all parking lots of state beaches in Southern California and the Bay Area to be closed for the weekend.The City of Oceanside has also decided to close off its beach parking lots.So far, no community COVID-19 outbreaks have been linked to outdoor settings.“I spoke to a number of the coastal mayors and said ‘are you confident you can enforce the physical distancing at your beaches?’” said county’s supervisor, Nathan Fletcher. “They said they can so we have to trust them that they can do that as we move forward into the weekend,” said San Diego County supervisor Nathan Fletcher.“We have our normal patrols in our coastal towns that we police for,” said Gore. “We’re not planning to add enforcement details to be specifically walking on the beaches to look at who’s wearing a mask, who’s socially distanced or not.”Gore said he expects beachgoers to comply with social distancing and facial covering rules when required.Under the latest public health order, restaurants must close to the public from 10 PM TO 5 AM.Bars, wineries, and breweries that don’t serve food must completely close down. Wineries that operate outside are an exception and may stay open.“State regulatory teams will be in different regions, we’ll be working with that team here which part of it is Alcohol Beverage Control and our county regulatory agency,” said Gore. “So, we can do enforcement if we don’t get that voluntary compliance that we’re seeking,” said Gore.The San Diego Police Department said it's anticipating crowds this weekend and will have extra officers patroling the beaches and bays to keep people safe.
