CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- The Sweetwater Union High School District is working with teachers to prepare for distance learning if and when classes resume after Spring Break. The district is currently closed because of coronavirus concerns, but district officials tell 10News plans are already in motion to figure out a way to complete the school year. District spokesperson Manny Rubio tells 10News the district is looking at distance learning, which can mean a number of things. Teachers could either teach virtually from home or provide students with learning material. Rubio says a majority of students already do a lot of online work and many of them have take home devices. The plans include addressing concerns that some students might not have devices or internet at their homes. Wednesday night, the district and the teachers union sent out a letter with guidance and information for teachers on how to move forward. All schools were deep cleaned and sanitized. Some schools are allowing teachers to enter their classrooms to get whatever materials they may need. For now, the plan is to have teachers return from Spring Break and allow for 2-3 days of planning before giving any direction to students and their parents. Officials are also keeping a close eye on updates from the state and the department of education. In the meantime, the district is still offering meal distribution while students are out of school. 1438

(KGTV) — Friday, 10News accompanied Chula Vista Police as they raided a marijuana dispensary operating illegally in the city.The raid in the 700 block of Third Avenue shut down an illegal shop called "Chula's Fuego Meds." Four people were arrested, including a man who said he was a security guard. Police found two loaded hand guns and about ,000 in cash and products.Back in March, Chula Vista hired a new attorney focused on prosecuting illegal pot shops, expediting raids and cases. The locations and businesses specifically haven't been approved yet."From 2014 really to the present is when we saw a spike in the illegal operations," City Attorney Glen Googins said. "The businesses have been sealed up, literally with welded shut windows, steel plates on doors and windows, magnetically sealed doors that do not open in the event of a power outage or another emergency," Collum said.Until now, the city and police department have been shutting down illegal pot shops with civil abatement warrants. They weren't able to seize the product or charge criminals. Instead the city could slap a ,000 penalty on the business.In March, they hired their first Criminal Prosecutor, and are working on getting funding for a full-time paralegal and an investigator. Together they will be called the Neighborhood Protection Unit. They hope to have those positions funded and filled by the end of this year or early 2020."We are out there, we are investigating you and we will be coming to close you down," Capt. Collum said.Collum said he knows the industry will continue to change and he said the department will adapt with it, "we'll continue to be out there, we will move and change our enforcement methods as the needs of our community dictate and we are going to continue to make sure that our community stays safe no matter what happens in the future for cannabis."Police say they're also learning some illegal dispensaries are operated by cartels and other organized crime networks. 3389

(KGTV) - Customers narrowly avoided being hit by an out-of-control truck that struck a Chula Vista bank Tuesday, sending cash flying.Four people were using the ATMs in a vestibule at the Chase bank at 1120 Broadway about 12 p.m. when the Dodge Ram truck crashed through the glass entryway.Three customers dodged the truck, which came dangerously close to Anna Gonzalez.“I’m shaking; I have a big angel with me,” said Gonzalez.Gonzalez had tried to use an ATM but when it didn’t work, she moved to another machine. The first machine was the one hit by the pickup. Three other customers in the vestibule dodged the truck.Irene Archuleta was cut by glass from the vestibule’s shattered windows.“Regular day, going to the ATM to withdraw some money. The next you know there was a truck right next to me,” said Archuleta. “Definitely an angel looking over us.”An elderly man was injured and taken to the hospital, along with two bank employees who were in another room and thrown from their desks upon impact.There was no immediate word on the severity of the injuries.The driver, who was not identified, was not injured, according to Chula Vista Fire Captain Francisco Soto.Chula Vista Police are looking into the cause of the crash.Firefighters said the crash did not damage a load bearing wall, making it possible for them to remove debris and return cash to the bank. 1399

CINCINNATI -- Police are looking for help finding a woman who took a blue morpho butterfly from Krohn Conservatory's special exhibit at about 5 p.m. Sunday. "I have never heard of anyone stealing a live butterfly from a butterfly show," said University of Cincinnati biology professor Stephen Matter Wednesday evening. The Menelaus blue morpho, which is prized by collectors for its vibrant, iridescent wing markings, lives natively in Central and South American forests. Although a news release from Cincinnati police identified it as "rare," it isn't especially, Matter said. (KGTV) -- Parents at Eastlake High School are asking the Sweetwater Union High School District board to investigate a math teacher that students accuse of making inappropriate comments. The parents say the issue started last spring when the teacher made comments about erectile dysfunction in class. Other parents say the teacher hardly teaches, forcing their kids to fall behind. Dan Huslin, a parent of an Eastlake High sophomore, said the school's principal told him last year the teacher was suspended, but this year he found out he's back in the classroom. Huslin said when he asked about why he returned, the current principal told him the district was providing the teacher counseling to help him improve. On Monday night, parents spoke at a Sweetwater district meeting and asked the board to investigate and remove the teacher. Also, parents asked the district to provide math tutoring for the students who are now behind. A district spokesperson told 10News the teacher was not suspended last year and was instead out for personal reasons, adding that they couldn't comment on whether the teacher is receiving any counseling because it is a personnel matter.
