SAN GABRIEL (CNS) - A multi-agency investigation was underway Sunday following a four-alarm fire that caused "extensive damage" to the historic 249-year-old San Gabriel Mission.Meanwhile, Los Angeles Archbishop Jose H. Gomez conducted a late- morning Mass at the Mission on Sunday and said a fundraising campaign is already underway to rebuild as the church's 250-year anniversary approaches."This destruction comes as we are getting ready to celebrate the 250th anniversary of this great mission. But this fire changes nothing. In our trials, may we know that we are loved as Your own children."'The San Gabriel Mission was founded by Franciscan Father Junipero Serra in 1771, a few miles southeast of Pasadena.Gomez was joined at Sunday's service by San Gabriel Mission pastor Father John Molyneux.The fire at 4:25 a.m. Saturday sent firefighters to 428 S. Mission Road, where the first to arrive reported a large column of smoke and flame coming from the corner of the roof, said Capt. Antonio Negrete of the San Gabriel Fire Department."During the course of the fire, portions of the roof fell upon the firefighters," Negrete said. "They were evacuated and initiated a defensive fire attack."The fire was knocked down at 6:48 a.m., he said. No injuries were reported."It's a tragic loss for our city. It's our city identifier," Negrete said. "We're trying to cope with it."The entire wood roof was gone, and the building sustained "extensive damage," including destruction of pews, he said, although the altar was saved.Negrete told the Los Angeles Times the bell tower and museum remained intact.On Saturday afternoon, investigators from the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and a regional task force including San Gabriel, Monterey Park, Monrovia and San Marino investigators were busy in the front of the mission where the fire was believed to have started, Negrete said. They could not get farther back because firefighters were still putting out hot spots, he said.A dog from the Los Angeles Fire Department was also on the scene sniffing to see if any accelerants were used to start the fire, Negrete said. A report on the cause was not expected for a week.The San Gabriel Fire Department said the initial investigation showed no sign of arson."We need to be diligent in our investigation and check all of the boxes," Negrete said. While arson investigations are routine with all fires at houses of worship, Negrete noted this blaze came at a time of criticism of the California missions and damage to several statues of Serra.Church staff removed a statue of Serra from public view last week and put it in safe storage, Negrete said.Gomez tweeted photos from the scene a short time later."Our beloved #SanGabrielMission, founded in 1771, devastated by fire before dawn," Gomez wrote. (KGTV) — Cameras caught a thief wreaking havoc at an East County business park, culminating in several destructive acts after he realized he was locked in.Scott Trafton has seen the video countless times, but his emotions have yet to lessen."Aggravating and makes me angry," said Trafton, who owns XP Builders.Just before midnight last Thursday night, a truck is seen driving into a business park on Wheatlands Court. The truck, believed to be a Chevy Silverado, is parked in the dark for more than four hours, before a man emerges and heads toward Trafton's general contractor business. In the video, the man grabs items from the truck bed, before prying open a toolbox in the back. A knife at this side, the man would get away with more than a thousand dollars with of Trafton's tools. "It hurts being a small business. Every penny counts," said Trafton.Trafton is not the only victim. The thief left behind a trail of shattered truck windows and missing items."Basically took whatever wasn't bolted down," said Trafton.When the man went to leave, he was met by a gate, locked by someone who had left earlier. The camera spies him apparently chaining his truck to the fence and pulling forward, but he can't get the fence down."He then came over to another truck and broke a window. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Two girls who were lost in a dense Northern California forest for nearly two days say they survived frigid nights by huddling under a tree branch and a huckleberry bush and by thinking "happy thoughts."Leia Carrico, 8, and her 5-year-old sister Caroline, said in an interview Monday they went on a hike last Friday past a marker that their parents told them not to pass because they wanted an adventure but lost their way home."I just wanted a little more adventure, I said to go a little farther," Caroline said.Leia said her sister cried the entire first night and she told her to think happy thoughts as they huddled under a tree branch close to the ground."I thought of going to the park with mommy and daddy. I thought of going to the ocean. I thought of everything I remembered, but it didn't work," Caroline said.Leia kept watch both nights and thought about the good memories from a family vacation to Monterey, California, she said.She said she also remembered what she learned from watching movies of people surviving in the wilderness, going camping every summer and the training with their local 4-H club. SANTA ANA (CNS) - A 30-year-old Palmdale man was sentenced today to 2 1/2 years in jail for smearing his semen on a co-worker's computer keyboard and mouse, in her honey jar and in half-consumed bottles of water and lotion on her desk in the La Palma office they shared.Stevens Millancastro, who was convicted Sept. 21, must also register as a sex offender for the rest of his life. Millancastro was convicted of two counts of battery and three counts of assault by Orange County Superior Court Judge Kathleen Roberts, who decided the case without a jury.Roberts was going to sentence the defendant to two years in jail plus five years of probation, but Millancastro rejected probation, so the judge tacked on the extra six months. Millancastro was given credit for serving 74 days behind bars.``We also know from his own testimony, and the testimony from the doctor, that he placed his semen on her items more times than he was actually charged,'' Roberts said.``This is much more serious and invasive than a normal punch or hit or slap,'' Roberts said, explaining why she was doling out the maximum punishment. ``This was a sexually motivated act... It is emotionally devastating to the victim.''Roberts pointed out that the defendant ``harassed her for four years, staring at her, making her feel uncomfortable at work to the point she altered her clothing.''At some point the woman finally complained informally three times and then ultimately made a formal complaint, Roberts said. ``When she finally made the formal complaint the defendant was forced to undergo sexual harassment training,'' Roberts said. ``He chose to ejaculate into her items and that was after sexual harassment training.''The judge said his ``sexual revenge'' was a ``sophisticated scheme to get her to ingest his semen after she reported him.'' Michael Morrison of the Orange County Public Defender's Office disputed that his client committed his crimes out of sexual gratification, saying it was only for revenge.Deputy District Attorney Laila Nikaien argued that the defendant was sexually aroused by the victim eating and drinking his semen. ``He is a deviant... It's a form of having power over the victim, of humiliating them.That's what a sex offender does. That's what the defendant did... He did it once and got his jollies off and wanted to keep doing it.'' Roberts also noted when she convicted the defendant last month that he testified that after the first time he fouled the victim's belongings, ``his anger was not satisfied,'' and said he did not need counseling. ``That makes someone very dangerous to the community,'' she said, adding that the victim ``hesitated to speak up for herself to complain formally because she knew the defendant and her boss were close friends and she thought there would be repercussions on her.''The judge noted there were eight separate acts in late 2016 and early 2017 and said she took into consideration the sexual harassment, though it was not criminal.``His anger grew out of control,'' she said. ``The evidence shows he can't control his anger. That is a red flag to the court that he cannot control himself.''Millancastro and the woman, whose name was not publicly revealed, had worked together since 2014, according to Nikaien, who said the defendant ``actually trained the victim.''The woman testified that Millancastro started asking her out via an instant messaging system at work.``He mentioned something about picking me up. I had no clue what he was talking about,'' she testified. ``He was basically asking me out to the movies. I said, no, I have a boyfriend.''``Did he keep asking?'' Nikaien asked. ``Yes,'' the victim testified. ``He would stare at me all day ... in an uncomfortable way, a crazy way.''Nikaien said the defendant ``would check her out from head to toe. He would stare at her when she walked to a printer... when she walked to a filing cabinet near her desk... It got so bad... she would wear a sweater around her waist... to prevent him from looking at her.''Ultimately, she ``made an informal complaint to her boss,'' the prosecutor said. ``He was told to stop, but he kept staring at her. To the point, about a month later... the victim filed a formal complaint with HR for the defendant incessantly staring at her.''A short time later in November 2016, she noticed a half-consumed bottle of water she had left on her desk looked ``cloudy'' and threw it away, Nikaien said.``A week after that, she left another half drunken bottle of water open on her desk and when she comes back to work again the next day, the water is cloudy and she's suspicious so she throws it away,'' Nikaien said. ``A week later she finds another bottle of half-drunken water on her desk and this time she opens it up.''The woman's ``boss then had a team set up a surveillance camera next to the victim's desk,'' and it captured the defendant after hours on Jan. 12, 2017, as he ``grabbed some tissues and walked over to the bathroom... '' the prosecutor said. ``He masturbates to arousal, he ejaculates... then what we see next on surveillance is he's holding up the crumpled tissue walking right to the victim's desk.'' 5166
