(AP) — Eight acrobats injured when the rigging suspending them by the hair plummeted to the floor during a circus performance in Rhode Island in 2014 have reached a .5 million settlement with ownership and management of the arena where the circus was held.Zachary Mandell, an attorney for the women, confirmed the settlement, first reported by The Providence Journal.A metal clip that held the acrobats 20 feet above the floor of the Dunkin' Donuts Center snapped.The women sued the Rhode Island Convention Center Authority, which owns the arena, and SMG, which manages it.According to the Associated Press, SMG arranged with Feld Entertainment to bring the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus to Providence.The Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) found that the clip was overloaded after the accident, so they cited Feld and imposed a fine, the AP reported.An attorney for both entities said he could neither confirm nor deny a settlement.Mandell added that insurers would pay the settlement. 1070
PUNTA GORDA, Fla. -- A Charlotte County deputy was forced to use his firearm to defend himself from charging dogs during a call Thursday morning.According to the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office, the deputy responded to a call from a resident who was afraid to exit his truck due to three loose and aggressive pit bulls in his yard.The deputy arrived to observe the dogs, described as approximately 100 pounds each, leaving the man's yard and chasing chickens in the next yard.As the deputy was speaking to the resident, the dogs returned and began to charge the men, forcing the resident back into his truck and chasing the deputy around it.The deputy fired his weapon at two of the dogs before they retreated down the road.Animal Control arrived and took the dogs into custody, giving the injured dogs treatment.They are investigating any possible citations for the owners. 889
RAMONA, Calif. (KGTV) - Residents in Ramona are worried that SANDAG's new transportation plan could put their lives at risk in the event of a wildfire.The proposed 2021 Regional Plan, which hasn't been approved and won't be voted on until November, would move tax money away from freeways like State Route 67, and put more emphasis on transit.People in Ramona say that worries them, because the 67 was jammed the last few times fires forced an evacuation."It took a couple hours to get down to Scripps Poway Parkway," says Ramona resident Paul Pakus, who had to evacuate during 2007's Witch Fire.In 2004, voters approved a measure on the ballot for a 40 year, half-cent sales tax to fund transportation projects, commonly called the "TransNet Tax." Part of the bill specifically mentioned State Route 67, as well as a handful of other freeways.When SANDAG unveiled their new transportation plan last month, they said Transnet tax money would now go to pay for transit projects instead of freeways. That means a proposed expansion of the 67 could be shelved if the plan is approved by the SANDAG Board."It's a bait-and-switch," says County Supervisor Jim Desmond, who sits on the Board. "People in Ramona are very sensitive to this. They want to make sure they're safe in a fire and they want to make sure that the infrastructure is in place to do that."SANDAG says the TransNet Tax ballot proposition included language that allows SANDAG to change where the tax money goes as priorities change over time.Executive Director Hasan Ikhrata says, even after just 11 years of the tax, it's clear San Diego needs to invest more in mass transit and less in roads. He says that's a necessity if the area wants to hit state and federal mandates for greenhouse gas emission."People need to give us a chance and time to put this forth. And once we do, I think they will be more pleased with what we're telling them," says Ikhrata.He also assured 10News that SR-67 would still be a priority."Safety will be addressed, period," he told 10News in an exclusive interview. "The 67 safety issue will take top priority."Ikrata added that the plan is still a work in progress and SANDAG wants feedback from the public. They have a "Vision Lab" at their downtown offices that people can visit to give feedback.They also plan to form an advisory council, made up of at least 10 industry experts and leaders, to help finalize the 2021 Regional Plan. RANCHO PENASQUITOS -- A group of residents in Rancho Pe?asquitos is sounding the alarm about a trio of dense developments that could add 1,500 housing units within 1.5 miles of each other.The group, called PQ-NE Action, notes the northwest part of Rancho Pe?asquitos only has one road in and out. They are raising concerns that the road could not handle the influx in the case of an emergency, such as a wildfire evacuation. "We fully understand things are going to change, but not change to a point where the neighborhood becomes threatened from a safety standpoint," said Junaid Razvi, a 40-year resident and spokesman for the group. Meanwhile, Lennar is proposing to build more than 530 new housing units on the hotel's old golf course.PQ-NE Action is now calling on Councilman Mark Kersey to step in. "They are moving fast on this, and so we would like to see a pause," Razvi said.
