SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The tight race between two democrats to become San Diego's next mayor is seeing an increase in attacks, less than four weeks before the election.Democrats Todd Gloria and Barbara Bry have both said they were not involved with messages that have gone out over the last few days. On Wednesday, Barbara Bry called a news conference Wednesday in response to two mailers she said were deceptive — one sent to Democrats made her out to be the Republican choice for mayor, while the other, sent to Republicans, made her out to be very liberal. "I think these mailers are very deceptive, they do not explain who I am as a person, they were done in a deceitful way to purposely deceive voters about who I am," she said. Both mailers appeared to be in support of Bry, with quotes or images from well-known public local officials. But a closer look shows that a committee that supports Todd Gloria paid for the ads. Attorney Gil Cabrera, the principal for Neighbors for Housing Solutions Supporting Todd Gloria, which sent the mailers, says their purpose is to show that Bry is trying to be different things to different voters."The one thing she hasn't said is that any of the quotes are inaccurate or any of the policy positions are inaccurate, which is, I think, interesting," he said. A spokesman for Gloria says the candidate is not legally allowed to coordinate with those mailers and has not done so. Meanwhile, Gloria is taking attacks from conservative radio host Carl DeMaio over his recent support of a bill that doesn't automatically force someone to register a sex offender in certain circumstances after sex with a minor - meant to end discrimination against LGBTQ individuals.Demaio said he did it on his own and said he has not endorsed Bry. Bry said her campaign had nothing to do with the texts and disagreed with Gloria's vote on the bill, Senate Bill 145.Political Analyst John Dadian said denouncing an ad would be a victory for an opponent. "You're never going to agree with your opponent, so that's why she's saying I'm not going to denounce it, you go talk to Carl DeMaio," he said. "And then on the other side of the coin, Todd Gloria is doing the exact same thing."The race is in a dead heat, according to the ABC 10News/Union-Tribune scientific poll released this week. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Poway man at the center of a multimillion-dollar Ponzi scheme was sentenced Wednesday to 12 years in prison. Numerous victims spoke to Dougherty via video conferencing due to COVID-19 protocols.In a plea deal, Christopher Dougherty pleaded guilty to grand theft and securities fraud back in March. He also received a white-collar crime enhancement, according to the District Attorney’s office. Prosecutors say there were nearly 50 victims, many who were elderly.He originally faced more than 80 felony counts after his arrest in April 2019.Team 10 first spoke to several alleged victims of Dougherty early last year. They said he stole the money he was supposed to invest for them. Some of his victims met Dougherty through their jobs as educators while he worked as an investment advisor with various school districts.“The lessons we learned from you were beyond the academic acumen. They are about the dark side of life,” said victim Cheryl Biagi during victim impact statements Wednesday afternoon.Biagi said Dougherty not only took money from her, but also her niece and her 91-year-old mother who has since passed away.“We know you are guilty of so much more than securities fraud and grand theft, but we hope when you get out of prison, you make every effort to repay every dime to those people who believed in you,” Biagi said.Investigators said Dougherty offered victims investment opportunities in companies he owned, then used some of their funds for his personal expenses like home remodeling, travel, and college tuition.For the first time, Dougherty spoke about his crimes. He offered an apology that lasted roughly 17 seconds.“To everyone, I accept full responsibility for my actions. I want to sincerely apologize to you and your family members and I also want to let you know I did make a mistake and I will not do this in the future. I extremely apologize,” Dougherty said in court.It is an apology that falls short for many victims. Jerry and Diane Cole told Team 10 they lost more than .6 million in the scheme.“This wasn’t money that basically fell out of the sky to us. This was the product of 50 years of our married life together… of working, saving, putting away money,” Cole said.Cole said they have been able to survive, thanks to their children and close friends. They believe Dougherty has no remorse for his crimes.Although Dougherty is ordered to pay restitution, many victims are doubtful they will see their money again.Deputy District Attorney Michael Zachry called this case “extremely egregious.” Zachry said there was over million dollars taken in with million net loss to victims.“It’s more than just money. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego Symphony has overcome the last major obstacle to a permanent home along San Diego's waterfront.The Port of San Diego's Board of Commissioners has granted a 15-year lease for the Symphony's Bayside Performance Park project. The project will see the construction of a seashell-shaped concert venue at Embarcadero Marina Park South, as well as various improvements to the surrounding park.The lease also includes four options allowing the Symphony to extend their lease up to 50 years.The San Diego Symphony will invest a minimum of million toward those improvements, including 66 new restrooms, expansion of the current promenade, and improvements to the park's existing basketball courts and exercise equipment.RELATED: Margaritaville Island Resort coming to San Diego“We’re confident concert-goers will love the improved access and state-of-the art stage and sound system, and bayfront visitors will love the new and improved park,” said Board Chairman Garry Bonelli.The Symphony could begin construction of the venue as soon as September. It wasn't immediately clear when the venue would open.A permanent concert venue for the symphony has been on the organization's wish list for years now. Since 2004, the Symphony has had to assemble and disassemble its temporary venue for its Bayside Summer Nights concert series.
