SHANGHAI, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- All entertainment activities at the Shanghai World Expo will be suspended Sunday in a show of respect for the victims of a massive mudslide in northwest China's Gansu Province.The Chinese national flags at the Expo Garden would fly at half-mast, and both the music broadcast at the opening and during the day would be stopped, the Shanghai Expo Bureau announced Saturday.Sun Weimin, the Expo Bureau's concierge director, said flags of the Bureau of International Expositions and the Shanghai World Expo would also fly at half-mast.Other Expo participants could decide for themselves whether to fly their flags at half-mast.The announcement was in line with that of the State Council, China's cabinet, which ordered suspension of all public entertainment and that Chinese flags fly at half-mast Sunday.The mudslide, which hit Zhouqu County, Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, on Aug. 8 has killed at least 1,239 people and an estimated 505 are still missing.According to the Expo Bureau, the Gansu Pavilion will hold a "solemn and simple" ceremony starting 10 a.m. Sunday. The big screen in the pavilion will broadcast pictures and videos of disaster relief in Zhouqu County.On Saturday night, a performance from Chongqing Municipality will include a tribute to victims of the Aug. 8 mudslide.Almost 100 performances and cultural activities scheduled for Sunday would be suspended. A performance by the Panama national troupe, scheduled Sunday morning at the Panama Pavilion, would be held on Saturday evening, a pavilion spokesman told Xinhua.Sunday also marked the National Pavilion Day for Equatorial Guinea. BEIJING, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- China kicked off a five-day military exercise in two provinces on Tuesday in which 12,000 military personnel and seven types of military aircraft are taking part.The military exercise, code-named "Vanguard-2010", was carried out simultaneously in seven cities across the provinces of Henan and Shandong at 8:21 a.m. Tuesday and featured simulated emergency evacuations and planning for combat.The drill, consisting of two phases from Tuesday to Saturday, will feature emergency evacuations, war planning, reconnaissance, early warning activities, ground-to-air attacks and evacuations of command posts during its first phase ending Thursday.Its second phase consists of testing Chinese air defense troops' ability in fighting air units in a "complicated electromagnetic environment."At 8:21 a.m. on Tuesday, air defense forces from the People's Liberation Army (PLA) and paramilitary forces in the seven cities including Qingdao, Jinan, Zhengzhou and Kaifeng began evacuation plans and successfully moved to designated areas, screens at the drill's commanding headquarter showed.By about 10:10, an air defense brigade from the PLA Jinan Military Command led by its commander, Zhao Geng, had already traveled 100 km and begun to formulate war plans.
XI'AN, July 17 (Xinhua) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel continued Saturday her visit in Xi'an, capital of China' s northwestern Shaanxi Province.During the visit, Merkel and Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao held talks with heads of prestigious German and Chinese firms, and visited China-German joint venture Siemens Signaling Company Ltd.Merkel also held a meeting with the acting Governor of the Shaanxi Province Zhao Zhengyong.Zhao said the Sino-German cooperation taking place in Shaanxi had enjoyed great achievements during recent years, as there had been about 60 Sino-German joint ventures operating in the province.Merkel said more and more German businessman were looking forward to getting involved in China's "West Development" campaign, and she believed the bilateral cooperation will be pushed forward in the future.The acting governor gave Merkel a horse sculpture as a birthday gift, for Merkel's 56th birthday falls on this Saturday.Merkel was born in the year of the horse, according to the Chinese traditional calendar.During her stay in Xi'an, Angela Merkel also visited a cultural theme park, and the renowned Terra-cotta Warriors and Horses in the mausoleum of Qinshihuang, the first emperor of an united China.Merkel will leave Xi'an on Sunday Morning and wrap up her four-day official visit to China.
