SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - For six years a Camp Pendleton Recon Marine allowed filmmakers full access into his life, which at one point hit rock bottom. The GI Film Festival documentary, Homemade, aims to start a conversation on taking better care of our returning veterans. Staff Sgt. Adam Sorensen was injured in 2010 by an explosive device in Afghanistan; 100 pieces of shrapnel pierced his body, and he required two surgeries.He could no longer serve in a combat role and spent the next couple of years as an instructor. The documentary follows Sorensen as he navigates civilian life and the effects of Post Traumatic Stress, Traumatic Brain Injury, and addiction on his marriage, family, and work.Filmmakers Danielle Bernstein and Jason Maris included scenes that can be hard to watch. "For me, it ultimately is to help people, because that's the whole reason I really wanted to make something that looked at how is this affecting people, families," said Maris. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Federal agents have been added to the investigation of a Kearny Mesa fire that gutted an off-roading business early Thursday morning.About 25 agents with National Response Team (NRT) of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) out of Los Angeles were requested by San Diego Fire-Rescue to assist with the probe.The NRT agents will arrive Friday and begin processing the scene at Off Road Warehouse Saturday, according to the ATF. That fire, however, was reportedly ruled as an electrical fire.“ATF is committed to working alongside state and local law enforcement by bringing its resources to determine the origin and cause of this fire that resulted in a total loss for this business,” said Carlos Canino, the special agent in charge of ATF Los Angeles Field Division. “ATF will provide whatever is necessary to thoroughly investigate and provide answers.”Thursday's blaze was reported at about 1:30 a.m. at the ORW building (7915 Balboa Ave.) The fire caused an estimated .5 million in damages and the warehouse's contents were deemed a total loss. No injuries were reported. The fire also forced the evacuation of several cats and dogs at the nearby Balboa Veterinary Hospital. 1582

Comerica Bank is currently conducting a separate process to sell the Virginia Beach brewery," the letter continued.The Virginia brewery closing followed that of Green Flash's Poway barrel-aging facility, Cellar 3, also closing this year. The Green Flash and Alpine Beer Company brands, the latter of which was picked up by Green Flash in 2014, will continue."The Green Flash and Alpine breweries will continue to operate in San Diego and Alpine, respectively," a release by the brewery said.In the letter, Hinkley blamed a "general slowdown" in the craft beer industry and increased competition as causes of the sell-off. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Hate crime charges were filed against two men accused of assaulting a Black journalist who was covering a peaceful Black Lives Matter protest in Imperial Beach in June.The San Diego County District Attorney’s Office announced felony assault and battery charges, and hate crime allegations, were filed against 38-year-old Jeffrey Brooks and 32-year-old Henry Brooks Jr. in connection with the June 7 incident at a beach near Veterans Park.Warrants have been issued for the arrest of the two men.RELATED: Man says he was sucker punched at Imperial Beach protestThe DA’s Office alleged Brooks and Brooks Jr. were at the peaceful march in Imperial Beach when they began “verbally and physically antagonizing the protesters.”At one point, Brooks Jr. allegedly threw eggs at a group of protesters.“While recording the scene, the victim was sucker punched in the head by Jeffrey Brooks, causing him to fall backwards and hit his head on the ground,” the DA’s Office said in a news release.If convicted of all charges, Brooks faces three years in custody; Brooks Jr. faces six years.District Attorney Summer Stephan said, “Protecting our community from hate crimes is a priority for my office because hate erodes our right to equality and fairness, and it leaves an impact on the victim and everyone who shares the victim’s race. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Despite a concerted effort to repair San Diego's crumbling sidewalks, a new report by city staff details the vast number of areas in desperate need of repair, as well as the skyrocketing cost to get them fixed."We're repairing more now than we ever have, but it continues to be a source of frustration," City Council member Mark Kersey told 10News in an interview Wednesday ahead of a City Council meeting on the matter.The new data shows that crews have repaired or replaced more than 27,000 sidewalks since the last major assessment was completed in 2015. However, more than 81,000 sidewalks still need attention. And while an estimate in 2016 put the costs to complete the work at million, that number has now jumped to to 100 million."The way it's set up right now is the sidewalk is the property owner's responsibility," Kersey explained. "They own it and they're supposed to maintain it. But because it's in the public's right of way, if someone trips and falls and hurts themselves, the city is the first one to get sued."Kersey says the repair process is far more complex and time-consuming than simply seeing a problem area and fixing it. Much of this stems from trying to prod property owners into making the repairs. However, Kersey says the costs of getting the right permits can be prohibitive, even sometimes matching the actual cost of the work. There is a city program which offers to bypass permitting and have the city do the work for half of the cost, though only a few dozen repairs are processed through the program each year.Another concern is mounting legal costs. On top of the cost of the actual repairs, the city has spent millions of dollars settling lawsuits stemming from dangerous sidewalks. "I would much rather put those millions of dollars into fixing the problem than paying out legal bills," said Kersey. 1874
