Millions in Northern California saw apocalyptic orange skies this week as massive wildfires burn through the region.Phoenix native Kristen Marin and her family live 2.5 hours north of San Francisco in Mendocino County, while the Oak Fire is burning near them."It feels a little like doomsday," said Marin. "It felt like it was night all during the day time. The air quality was awful. The crickets were chirping. The floodlights were on, thinking it was dark. Everything is covered in ash. It smells like smoke. You'd think that you were in a fireplace," said Marin.On Thursday, the Oak Fire was 25% contained.Luckily, Marin's family hasn't been told to evacuate."You're just on notice, all the time you're wondering if it's going to be your community or your address that pops up on the alert," said Marin.According to the California Department of Fires and Forestry Protection, there are about 14,000 firefighters on the line of 29 major wildfires burning across the state.Tait Mitton is leading a team of four from the Arizona Fire and Medical Authority. They're on a two-week mission northeast of Fresno working night shifts on the Creek Fire in the Sierra National Forest."Our responsibility is life safety. Making sure everyone is evacuated from the area, also protecting structures, houses, cabins," said Mitton.The Creek Fire has burned more than 175,000 acres and destroyed hundreds of homes and is 0% contained."Right now California---the firefighters over here --they're working really hard, they're overtaxed right now, we're going to do everything we can to help and help the community," said Mitton.Mitton said compared to desert fires, the vegetation in the Sierra National Forest makes it harder to contain the flames since there are more trees than burn hotter for longer. In a world of digital games, there’s a group of people who prefer to keep it old school.Their game of choice: pinball. "We play in a league; the Chicago Pinball Authority League,” said competitive pinball player Eric Meunier. “There are 32 active participants." Competitive pinball is growing in popularity, and its headquarters is in Chicago. "This is where a lot of the best players in the world are," Meunier said. There are over 200 pinball arcades in the city, and countless leagues. The Chicago Pinball Authority League was started by Kent Zilch. In order to understand his passion for pinball, you have to go to his basement. It all started with one machine. "Then, we bought a second, then a third, then a fourth…,” Zilch said of his pinball machine collection.Now, Zilch owns more than 60! His basement is now his permanent practice area. "We like a mixture of old pinball machines with the new ones, too,” he says. “So, if you look around, there are machines all the way back to the 60s." The newest game added to his collection is The Munsters. The games also bring the family together. Zilch’s wife and children are also on his league. "We come down here probably four or five times a week," he said. When it's pinball season, they all practice together. Zilch says they usually begin in January and go through August. "We have two divisions; we have an A division and a B division,” he said. “And whoever wins a division, wins a really cool trophy." Each game has its own set of rules. But with four people to a machine, there is one goal: rack up the most points. “You go to each game and then you get points based on what place you come in," Zilch said.The competition keeps him and his family and his team coming back to the flippers, but so does the fun. 1791
After responding to an online advertisement for French bulldog puppies last weekend, a Wooster, Ohio, family worries that they might have been taken advantage of. Not only do they not have the dog they were hoping to bring into their family, but they are also out more than ,500, the family said.In late August and in early November, the Mark family was forced to say goodbye to their two beloved dogs, one of which formerly belonged to Angela Mark's father who passed away earlier this year."That was all she had left of her father," Brady Mark said.The other dog, who passed away Nov. 15th, was a loveable American bulldog that was a companion animal to the Mark's teenage son. The family was taking the back-to-back losses pretty hard, Mark said, which explains why he and Angela so easily gravitated to an online advertisement for French bulldog puppies from a seller in Montana.The seller reportedly told Angela that a family member of his had also recently passed away. Unable to take care of the puppies himself, the seller reportedly said that he would offer a puppy at a steeply discounted rate but the Mark family would have to pay for shipping, which would be around 0.The seller could not be reached for comment and his online advertisement has been taken down.Angela says she was directed to use a Montana-based company, American Delivery Service. The company's fairly official-looking website says the company, "[aims] to provide pet owners with unique advanced solutions needed to fly with your pets." The website does not list an address and calls to the listed phone number were not answered.Additionally, there does not appear to be an official filing for American Deliver Service through the Montana Secretary of State's Office.In the contracts, messages and invoices from alleged representatives of American Delivery Service, there were numerous grammatical and spelling errors, as well as no official letterhead.In hindsight, Brady Mark said there were several red flags."We've been getting the runaround back and forth from the shipping company. Who's legitimate and who's not? We don't know yet," Mark said. "[Alleged company representatives] said, 'hey we need more money for this this and this.' We still have no dog and we're about 00 deep right now, probably even more than that."Mark said the alleged company went as far as to provide short videos and other media showing dogs in shipping containers, apparently suggesting the Mark's new puppy was in transit. There was also a shipment tracking number provided on the invoices. However, at every turn, there were demands for hundreds of dollars in order to pay for things like vaccines and special dog carriers.Angela Mark said an alleged company representative said the dog was waiting at a local airport and would be released to the family upon final payment. However, Brady Mark said he called the airport and an airport representative told him there weren't any animals in holding.Brady Mark said he and his wife have both come to the belief that their money may never be coming back."We borrowed money off of our daughter," Brady Mark said. "[Angela's] mom stepped in to try to help us out. We didn't just screw ourselves. We screwed other people in the process. It's going to screw us at the end of the month when bills start coming due. We might be short on rent. It's not their problem, it's ours. Still, if it can help somebody else to avoid what we just went through, so be it. If it prevents it happening from someone else, I guess I'll be that goat."According to the Better Business Bureau, so-called puppy scams have grown in number and in complexity in recent years. The past three years, the BBB has received nearly 10,000 reports of puppy scams. However, the FTC estimates that only 10% of victims actually come forward.Although the scams have grown more complex, they are often distinguishable by certain hallmarks. Possible red flags include communications only through email, copycat or easily obtainable stock photos and payments through non-traditional services like pre-paid gift cards. Since January of this year, state regulators have approved about 100 rate hike requests involving dozens of property insurers.The insurance regulation office in Florida gave the green light to South Fidelity to raise their rates by about 30%. And regulators okayed a 30% rate hike for Capitol Preferred.Jupiter homeowner Heidi Epstein said her property rates shot up by 50% when her insurer stopped doing business in Florida. Protecting her property will now cost Heidi an additional ,500 a year."In the middle of a pandemic when everyone is not sure what their financials are going to look like, this is not the time to have everything going sky high," she said.The insurance industry blames the 2017-2018 storm season. Hurricanes Irma and Michael caused catastrophic damage and triggered more than billion in claims.Senator Jeff Brandes (R-St. Petersburg) says the storms and rampant lawsuits against insurance carriers are driving the steep hikes in rates."They are filing more and more lawsuits they know some of these insurance companies will settle, and ultimately those costs are passed on to homeowners," he said.Insurance Industry watchdog The Federal Association for Insurance Reform points to thousands of lawsuits filed by contractors. President Paul Handerhan says roofers, plumbers and others solicit homeowners through ads, calls or door knocks and convince them to file an insurance claim. Handerhan described the pitch to homeowners as: "Let us do a free inspection of your roof, let us go inside the property of your home to see if we can find any damages. We will file a claim on your behalf."Brandes says all those claims snowball and lead to premium hikes."You have hundreds if not thousands of people asking for new roofs then all of a sudden rates across the state begin to skyrocket."Pasco County homeowner Linda Cempe got a new roof after contractor Smart Storm Solutions cold-called her about possible storm damage. She said the roofer told her that "other than a minor deductible, the whole cost for the repairs, including the facia and soffits, would be covered."The I-team checked court records and found Smart Storm Solutions filed over 300 lawsuits against insurers, including Linda Cempe's carrier in 2019 alone.Smart Storm Solutions staff attorney Robert MacKinnon says the company will only canvas neighborhoods with known storm damage. He also said the company files cases when insurance companies refuse to pay the full cost of a claim."They are confirmed claims we are arguing over the extent of damages," MacKinnon said.Smart Storm Solutions also sued Larry Kohman's insurance company over his claim after cold calling the homeowner about roof damage.We checked and found court documents showing the Kohmans' insurer settled with Smart Storm Solutions over a year ago. But the contractor never returned to replace the roof."We don't sleep much," Larry said, who explained he and his wife constantly worried about the growing amount of water damage in their home caused by a leaky roof.Smart Storm Solutions' attorney blamed the pandemic for the delay in Kohman's case and apologized, saying the company should have communicated better. After we started asking questions, Smart Storm Solutions replaced the couple's roof.MacKinnon says the lawsuits his company is filing are needed to keep insurers in check and are not part of the rate hike problem.Brandes says insurance rates could double in the next three years over claims and litigation. The company shut down temporarily for the pandemic and that will also affect the holiday offering of its "Hot Tamales" and "Ike and Mike" fruit candies."I don't think the consumer will know when they walk into a supermarket what is short and what is not short because so many things are disrupted," said John Phillip Tarantino Jr., president of Tarantino Foods, LLC in Buffalo.Tarantino Foods is a wholesale food distributor with 2,000 customers that includes colleges, casinos, restaurants, and pizzerias.The company president told 7 Eyewitness News Reporter Ed Reilly that his business is having a hard time finding many items such as french fries, California dates, certain types of cheese, frozen bread, bread crumbs, ketchup, Kraft ranch dressing, macaroni and cheese, McCormick spices, and packets of hot sauce - to name a few.It is a difficult situation for food service suppliers as retail demand in grocery stores exploded during the crisis and forced manufacturers to redirect their efforts. Some less-profitable items are not being produced. Pasta and flavored drinks have seen those reductions.Tarantino said consumers were looking to buy anything they could stockpile, such as Campbell soups and frozen vegetables.Shut down of food plants with workers afraid of the virus started the problem which increased to a "tsunami" with surging demand by shoppers. That situation was made even more complicated by a severe shortage of product packaging materials. Tarantino said he believes that to be one of the reasons why some food products are having a hard time getting to the shelves currently.The family-owned business is recommending people take advantage of the WNY harvest season to stock-up on corn, tomatoes, and squash.
