SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KGTV) -- As Californias head out to vote, many important propositions and measures are on the ballot this November. One of those initiatives is Proposition 16.If approved, Prop 16 would repeal Proposition 209 from the state constitution which, according to BallotPedia, banned the use of affirmative action involving sex or race-based preferences. Those in support of Proposition 16 argue that it takes a step toward “dismantling structural racism and sexism.”Meanwhile, those opposed to the proposition point to Prop 209 as to why voters should mark "no" on the ballot. “The state shall not discriminate against, or grant preferential treatment to, any individual or group on the basis of race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin, in the operation of public employment, public education, and public contracting,” the website states in reference to a passage from Prop 209.See what a vote for or against Proposition means below, according to the state's voter guide:YES: A YES vote on this measure means: State and local entities could consider race, sex, color, ethnicity, and national origin in public education, public employment, and public contracting to the extent allowed under federal and state law.NO: A NO vote on this measure means: The current ban on the consideration of race, sex, color, ethnicity, and national origin in public education, public employment, and public contracting would remain in effect. 1452

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) — Three Southern California women have been arrested on suspicion of stealing more than million in federal student financial aid through Fullerton College.Federal prosecutors said Wednesday that the trio enrolled hundreds of mostly non-existent students, successfully applied for grants and loans and then pocketed the money.Officials said at least two of the more than 200 names used to apply for loans were inmates in state prisons. The Press-Enterprise reports the defendants are 32-year-old Sparkle Shorale Nelson, 31-year-old Shykeena Monique Johnson and 37-year-old Jerrika Johnson. All three have pleaded not guilty charges including conspiracy, identity theft, mail fraud and wire fraud.A tentative trial date was set for Aug. 20. Court records did not list the attorneys representing them. 831

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — The California Assembly said Monday it denied a former lawmakers' appeal of an investigation that found he sexually harassed a lobbyist in 2016.Former Democratic Assemblyman Matt Dababneh had appealed the finding that he likely pushed the lobbyist into a bathroom at a Las Vegas party and masturbated in front of her while urging her to touch him. Lobbyist Pamela Lopez publicly made the accusation against Dababneh last December and submitted a complaint to the Assembly Rules Committee, which hired an outside investigator. The Assembly Rules Committee told Dababneh in a letter dated Friday that his appeal was reviewed and rejected.Dababneh denies harassing Lopez and is suing her for defamation. Representatives for Dababneh did not immediately respond to requests for comment.Lopez said she hopes the Assembly's rejection of Dababneh's appeal encourages other women to speak out about sexual harassment."This decision is an important step to uphold fairness, accountability, and equity in the workplace," she said in a statement. The lawyer hired by the Assembly to investigate the allegation interviewed more than 50 people and reviewed relevant documents, according to the letters released by the Assembly on Monday. In his appeal, Dababneh argued she did not interview some character witnesses he provided. He said he was denied due process because the Assembly didn't provide him with a copy of the investigation report. The Assembly says such reports are confidential and subject to attorney-client privilege. In his lawsuit against Lopez, Dababneh said he was forced by Assembly leadership and colleagues to resign his Los Angeles-area seat last year because of the allegations. He also said he has suffered depression and anxiety. He is seeking unspecified damages for defamation and intentional infliction of emotional distress.Lopez's lawyer, Jean Hyams, said Dababneh's lawsuit is an act of retaliation and an attempt to silence women. 1981

ROCHESTER HILLS, Michigan — A Michigan man is accused of trying to kill a teen after the boy allegedly knocked on his door for directions.Jeff Zeigler, 53, a former Detroit firefighter, is charged with assault with intent to murder over the incident.Lee Kolozsvary, a long-time friend of Zeigler's says he's blown away by the allegations and thinks he was just trying to scare away the teen at the door.During a hearing on Friday, Zeigler said the public isn't hearing the whole store.Brennan Walker, 14, got lost on his way to school without a phone after missing the bus."I guess I put my hand up, I don't really remember, and I started to run," Walker said. "I looked back behind me and I saw him aiming at me and I turned back. I turned back and I heard the gunshot."Walker's family said the thought he was trying to break in. It was all caught on security video.Kolozsvary says he doesn't think Zeigler had any intent to kill."The Jeff Zeigler I know, he's a good guy," Kolozsvary said. "I know what kind of family man he is and I don't think he had any malice whatsoever toward that young man except for the protection of his home." 1156
