They'll be replaced with larger bottles or wall-mounted dispensers, depending on the hotel.The move follows a similar announcement last month by IHG, which owns Holiday Inn, Kimpton and other brands. IHG said it will eliminate approximately 200 million tiny bottles each year by 2021. Last year, Walt Disney Co. announced it would replace small plastic shampoo bottles at its resorts and on its cruise ships. Many smaller companies, like the five Soneva Resorts in Thailand and the Maldives, have also ditched plastic bottles.But Marriott's move is the largest so far. The company says it will eliminate approximately 500 million small plastic bottles each year, or about 1.7 million pounds of plastic. Marriott, the world's largest hotel chain, has more than 7,000 hotels in 131 countries. Its 30 brands range from SpringHill Suites and Residence Inn to Sheraton and Ritz-Carlton.Marriott started replacing small bottles early last year at some North American brands, including Courtyard and Fairfield hotels. About 1,000 of those now feature larger bottles or pump dispensers that are hooked to the shower wall.Denise Naguib, Marriott's vice president of sustainability and supplier diversity, said Marriott got a positive response from guest surveys. Many were relieved because the larger bottles let them use as much or as little shampoo as they want.Naguib said most Marriott hotels will eliminate small bottles by July 1, 2020. Luxury brands will get them by the end of 2020. Lower-priced brands will have dispensers or bottles that are tethered to the shower wall. Luxury brands will have untethered bottles. The bottles hold the equivalent of 10 to 12 small bottles. All are tamper resistant.The larger bottles will still be plastic, and Marriott still plans to replace them _ not just refill them _ when they run low. But Naguib said the larger bottles are easier to recycle than smaller ones.Soon, hotels may not have a choice. According to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Hurricane Michael caused nearly billion in damage. However, nearly nine months since the storm, there is still plenty of damage and debris in Panama City, Panama City Beach, and Mexico Beach, where Michael hit the hardest. According to a REBUILD 850 survey released Tuesday, public support for Hurricane Michael recovery efforts in the Florida Panhandle is lacking. The results showed nearly half of respondents would do nothing to help people affected by the hurricane and nearly 75 percent said they would not consider donating money to help with relief efforts. Some affected by the hurricane said this could be because those across the country mistakenly think life has gone back to normal in the panhandle. As the new hurricane season approaches, many residents across the panhandle are still trying to recover from the Category 5 storm. E.W. Scripps went to the panhandle and spoke with those who are still trying to get their living situation back to normal. Some say they may have to move back into a home they say isn’t safe since their temporary living situation will no longer work. Others are living in their homes that still have damage and no insulation, living where inside temperatures reach 93 degrees. Ann Marie Dimeglio has lived in Panama City Beach for 17 years with her husband and three kids. “There are so many people who have it far worse than I do,” Dimeglio says. “We are all trying to get by after the storm. It’s not the same. People were struggling before the hurricane, and now with everything that’s going on, it’s just getting worse. But we’re all just trying to fight through it. You’re not living if you’re not fighting. I think a lot of us here just want people to know that things aren’t fine here. In updated guidance issued by the CDC on Monday, it recommended that all cruise ship and river boat travel be avoided anywhere in the world during the spread of the coronavirus. The announcement comes as nearly 150 countires worldwide have reported a confirm case. The recommendation is especially important for older individuals, and those with a serious chronic medical condition. The CDC noted several recent examples of where the the coronavirus spread among passengers on board cruise ships. Recent examples include 696 cases and 8 deaths on the Diamond Princess cruise ship in Japan and 28 cases on the Grand Princess cruise ship in the United States, the CDC said. The CDC issued the following recommendations to tell patients who plan on going on cruise ships and river boats:Advise patients to defer all cruise ship travel, including river cruises, worldwide.Explain that their return travel to the United States may be impacted, and formal quarantine procedures may be implemented if confirmed cases are identified on board.Explain that appropriate medical care or medical evacuation may not be available internationally.Explain that some countries may refuse docking or disembarkation if there are known or suspected cases on board.For patients who still intend to cruise, advise them to practice social distancing and monitor their health both during travel and for 14 days from the time they disembark. Social distancing means staying out of crowded places, avoiding group gatherings, and maintaining distance (approximately 6 feet or 2 meters) from others, when possible.The guidance came on the same day that President Donald Trump and leading health officials suggested that gatherings of 10 or more people pose a risk to older and disabled people.
