(KGTV) -- A Fallbrook woman was convicted of negligence for killing a father of four off of Highway 395 near the Pala Mesa Resort on May 23, 2017.Sulem Garcia was on prescription medications when she veered off the road crashing into Paul Burke who was on his bicycle, blocks from his home. Garcia's lawyer argued she was exhausted from finishing her finals at Palomar College that day and had been on the prescription medications to treat depression for three years.Garcia received the maximum sentence which was 1-year behind bars. More than 60 of Burke's family members and friends were in the courtroom. Burke's wife Laura gave a victim impact statement saying she does not believe that Garcia is remorseful and that the sentencing was a slap on the wrist.Burke owned and operated a custom surf shop for more than 40 years. He also worked at Costco. Burke's daughter and son both spoke at the sentencing hearing. 938

(KGTV) - The former NFL player accused of raping a 17-year-old girl while she was unconscious has been bound over for trial. The preliminary hearing is over a 2003 incident in which Winslow Jr. is accused of raping the teen while she was unconscious.Winslow Jr. was 19 years old at the time of the alleged incident, prosecutors said. WASHINGTON — The number of Americans filing for first-time unemployment aid fell to 860,000 last week, according to the Department of Labor. That is down about 33,000 from the week before.The Labor Department also said Thursday that 12.6 million are collecting traditional unemployment benefits, compared with 1.7 million a year ago.However, it does not include claims filed under other federal aid programs, including a program that provides benefits to those usually ineligible like the self-employed or gig workers.Before the pandemic hit the economy, the number signing up for jobless aid had never exceeded 700,000 in a week, even in the depths of the 2007-2009 Great Recession.The economy and job market have recovered somewhat from the initial shock of the coronavirus pandemic and safety measures.
