SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego financial expert in San Diego has a message for women looking for success: a man is not a financial plan.Most women would rather talk with the grandmothers about their love lives than talk about financial planning, according to an investment survey done by Oppenheimer Funds.CPA Ginita Wall has a clear message.“Every marriage ends in either divorce or widowhood and 70 percent of the time it’s the woman who’s left alone,” said Wall. “Then thinking that magically, someday, I’ll start saving for retirement, someday I’ll be able to buy a house; living in the someday and not really planning for it today.”Wall moved her CPA practice to San Diego 31 years ago. She realized there was a need.“Women were out in the marketplace, but they weren't managing the money, and sadly, often nobody was.”Wall and financial planner Candace Bahr launched the Women’s Institute for Financial Education (WIFE), a nonprofit to give women the tools to start making a difference.“We didn't have anything to sell anybody. Our whole goal was and continues to be ‘our goal is education,’” said Bahr.Wall and Bahr established Second Saturday, a monthly workshop to teach women what they need to know during divorce. Each session brings in an attorney for matters of the court. Wall gives financial advice, a counselor helps with family issues, and a mediator can settle the differences. The experts volunteer their time.“It’s a decision for many people that may be the largest financial decision of their life, and if you're going through it uninformed or too emotional, it's going to be difficult to make the right choices.”Wall says love and money go together, but so do arguments.“if you loved me more, you wouldn't be spending this money, spending more on me, or you would understand how I feel.” Wall advises couples to talk about what’s important to them, make goals, create a concrete plan and monitor it.“So we want women to be partners in a relationship, not dependents,” said Bahr.Wall and Bahr’s money message has gone national. Second Saturday is now in 115 other locations around the country, and there are plans to be in 500 cities soon.“It's amazing because we didn't set out to do this for 31 years. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A random act of kindness at a Rancho Bernardo grocery store has a grateful grandma paying it forward. Kathy Yezarski went to the Albertsons at Rancho Bernardo and Poway Roads Friday night to buy milk and cereal for her grandchildren, who were staying at her home. She was about to pay for her groceries when she noticed a problem. “When I got to the checkout I was really embarrassed to see that I didn’t have my wallet,” Yezarski said. Yezarski thought she’d have to leave the items behind and return home when “a very kind young man” noticed her dilemma. “The man behind me very quickly said ‘I’ve got this,’” Yezarski said. Yezarski was mortified she had forgotten her wallet. “It was really touching to me…heartwarming that he would do that for someone.” Yezarski was so moved, she posted about the kind act on the Nextdoor app for her neighborhood. She was hoping the young man would see the post but she wasn’t expecting the reaction she received. “I didn’t realize when I posted until after I posted that two previous posts had been about recent shootings, and I think people were just reeling from that, feeling so upset and I think they needed to hear something positive. A lot of people said that: thank you for restoring my faith in humanity,” Yezarski said. She was inspired to perform a kind act of her own. “Beyond just thanking him, I thought - I’ve got to pay this forward. I went on the website for the San Diego Food Bank and donated. I thought, wow, I can’t just let this stop here, I can’t. According to Zillow, million in San Diego can buy a single-family home that has 2,410 square feet, four bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms. Families in Chula Vista can get more for their money, where million can buy a 3,890 square foot home with five bedrooms and four and a half bathrooms. On a slightly lighter note, million can typically buy a 1,900 square foot, three bedroom, two bathroom home in Los Angeles, Zillow reports. In the U.S., the typical million home is a detached single-family house with about 2,200 square feet with four bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A recently transformed motel in the Egger Highlands community is now housing homeless families during the pandemic.The city started plans to transform a former Super 8 motel into transitional housing to help people in a drug and alcohol diversion program, called S.M.A.R.T.However, the city officials say the pandemic created a more significant need to house homeless families. The Convention Center was turned into a temporary shelter during the pandemic, housing individuals from the city's bridge shelters. However, the environment was not appropriate for families, said Ashley Bailey, press secretary for Mayor Kevin Faulconer."The transitional housing facility here on Palm Avenue was finishing construction in May, so we identified it as a potential area to expand and offer more space for families," Bailey said. "Having this facility gives families and children a place to come in, be safe, be sanitary, and get connected to services so they can get on to a better life."Erikssa Martinez recently moved into the facility with her husband and three kids."It's set up like a big hotel room, its really nice, my kids are happy to be here," she said.Martinez says the Alpha Project helped get into the facility. They had been homeless since December and had been staying with relatives, or in motels. She says she and her husband have slept in their cars on some nights, after dropping off their kids with family members."We've been looking forward to is having some kind of stability, where we're not stuck in our car for hours waiting where we're going to have to a place to stay at," Martinez said.They also have access to more services, and Martinez hopes that her will be able to get into permanent housing soon.The city plans to still use the transformed motel as transitional housing for S.M.A.R.T. when the property is no longer needed to shelter homeless families during the pandemic. 1924

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A North Park gym owner who defied the governor's health order and moved workouts indoors was served with a violation notice from the county, threatening ,000 daily fines. Owner Frank Kole initially complied with last month's order and moved everything outdoors, but after five days made the decision to go back inside. That's because he says the sidewalks outside his gym were littered with feces, blood stains, and trash. Kole instead instituted strict rules indoors, requiring masks and social distancing. But the county, while acknowledging the tough reality outside, still served him with the violation, saying it was the law. RELATED: North Park gym moves back in after 'disgusting' outdoor workouts"I appreciate that you previously complied with the state and local orders by moving your operations outdoors and had difficulties due to the surrounding environment," said the violation letter, signed by Public Health Officer, Dr. Wilma Wooten. "I encourage you to work with the city of San Diego to see what can be done to resolve the difficulties you previously faced." On Friday, however, Kole took everything back outside. Immediately, he and his staff discovered a syringe on the sidewalk as they were setting up equipment. The city of San Diego power washed the sidewalk on Wednesday, but Kole says it was a quick job without trash pickup. "If we weren't out there cleaning that sidewalk up everyday, that needle would still be there," Kole said. A spokeswoman for the city of San Diego says environmental crews will pick up syringes with biohazard boxes when they encounter them. In the meantime, residents can report the on the city's Get-it-done App. Kole says he will comply with the order and keep the gym outside, even if it means reduced hours and more staff time moving everything in and out everyday. "I'm a proud American and I'm a proud business owner and I will do what it takes to keep my business alive," Kole said.
