BEIJING, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and other leaders offered a rare glimpse of their dancing steps and singing voices Thursday evening as they joined tens of thousands of people at an evening gala celebrating New China's 60th birthday.     Red lanterns, bright lights, 33-minute spectacular fireworks, high-spirited songs and dances turned the Tian'anmen Square in central Beijing into a sea of joy Thursday evening. After the dance, the leaders and 60,000 people sang together the patriotic song "Ode to the Motherland".     The chorus brought the square's fervor to a climax and the people had radiant smiles on the face.     Tibetan girl Ngawang Qungji said she was excited that President Hu joined hands with Tibetan and Uygur performers to dance.     "We are just like the members of the same family and celebrate our mother's birthday together," she said.     "There are so many reasons for us to be proud of the great changes over the past 60 years," she said. "I even couldn't help crying when I saw the fireworks portraying a train running on the Qinghai-Tibet Railway lighted the Tian'anmen Square."     Senior Chinese can still remember another touching scene on the evening of the National Day in 1966 when Chairman Mao Zedong and Premier Zhou Enlai, surrounded by a crowd of civilians, sat on the cold ground of the Golden Water Bridge in front of the Tian'anmen Rostrum to enjoy watching the fireworks show with beaming faces.     Behind the close relationship between CPC leaders and the people is the "Mass Line," the fundamental work method of the CPC, which means "all for the masses, all rely on the masses" and "from the masses, to the masses." BEIJING, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese police have confiscated close to 53,000 guns by the end of August in a nationwide crackdown started in March this year, and 9,849 suspects involved in gun-related crimes were punished, the Ministry of Public Security (MPS) said Thursday.     The ministry started the special crackdown on explosives and gun-related crimes in March, and said it would continue till China's Oct. 1 National Day celebration.     The crackdown is part of the ministry's campaign to maintain public stability, as this year marks the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.     Police also confiscated more than 2 million bullets and 120,000imitation guns, the ministry said.     About 12 percent of all guns confiscated were seized in the southern Hainan Province, while about 17 percent of the confiscated bullets came from the central Henan Province, the ministry said.     The southern province of Guangdong seized 34,690 imitation guns, which took up one fourth of the total.     Meanwhile, the MPS urged that efforts to crack down on gun-related crime must not be relaxed yet. Police forces should mobilize the public to report to the ministry if they have information about gun-related crimes, the ministry said on its website.     About 60 percent of the guns confiscated by the police were handed in by the public voluntarily, the ministry said.

BEIJING, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC), the world's biggest lender by market value, posted a profit after tax of 66.7 billion yuan (9.77 billion U.S. dollars) in the first half of this year, up 2.8 percent over the same period last year.     The increase was mainly attributed to gains on incomes from the bank's intermediate business, including investment banking business and fund dealing commission, which grew 17 percent from ayear earlier to stand at 28.3 billion yuan, according to the bank's half-year report released Thursday.     Outstanding loans amounted to 5.44 trillion yuan by the end of June, jumping 18.9 percent from the beginning of this year in response to the country's economic stimulus plan.     The non-performing rate was 1.81 percent by June, 0.48 percentage points lower than at the beginning of 2009, as outstanding bad loans decreased 5.8 billion yuan after the bank intensified risks control.     At the end of June 2009, the bank's deposits increased 1.69 trillion yuan from the beginning of the year, leaving its outstanding deposits exceeding 10 trillion yuan.     The total assets of ICBC stood at 11.4 trillion yuan by the end of June, up 17.2 percent from the end of last year.     Earnings per share for the bank amounted to 0.2 yuan and the bank's stock advanced 3.26 percent to end at 4.75 yuan in Shanghai Stock Exchange Thursday. ICBC was simultaneously listed in Shanghai and Hong Kong in October 2006.

BEIJING, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- Salary increases for executives of state-owned enterprises (SOE) should be in line with those for employees, Hu Xiaoyi, China's Vice Minister of Human Resources and Social Security, said Tuesday.     Hu said that the government was formulating a document to regulate more effectively SOE executives' salary plans, and the document would be released in the near future.     "The disparity between executives' and employees' salary rises should not be alarmingly large," Hu said, noting long-term incentives as well short-term incentives should be used for SOE executives.     The State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission is responsible for the regulation of 136 centrally-administered SOEs.

BEIJING, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu, who headed Monday to the typhoon-hit regions in Fujian and Zhejiang, warned Tuesday that the country faces grim tasks of fighting secondary disasters as a result of Typhoon Morakot. Big floods are still likely to happen as heavy rainfall persists in the south and many rivers continued to maintain high water levels, he said.     More than 20 rivers reported water levels above flood-alarm lines in Zhejiang, Fujian and Anhui provinces. The county seat of Cangnan is flooded on Aug. 10, 2009 in east China's Zhejiang Province. Rainfall brought by typhoon "Morakot", the 8th this year, has flooded the county seat of Cangnan    Hui asked relevant departments to strengthen monitoring of flooding and forecasts of other disasters, so as to relocate people as quickly as possible to minimize casualties.     Typhoon Morakot has left eight people dead and three missing on the Chinese mainland after a powerful landing in east China Sunday, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs Tuesday.     As of Tuesday afternoon, Morakot had moved into the Yellow Sea, and would gradually pose less threat to coastal provinces in eastern China.
