A study released Wednesday by the British Medical Journal claims that vegetarians could have a higher risk of a stroke than meat eaters. The study followed more than 48,000 participants in the UK for nearly 18 years. The study placed participants in three groups: Meat eaters, fish eaters and vegetarians. The study claims that vegetarians were 20 percent more likely to have a stroke than meat eaters, which equaled to be three additional haemorrhagic stroke victims per 1,000 participants. Before you change your eating habits, you should know that meat eaters were more likely to develop a heart disease than vegetarians. The difference between meat eaters and vegetarians was 10 additional cases of heart disease per 1,000 participants. According to the British Medical Journal, previous studies on the correlation between a vegetarian diet and strokes only reported stroke mortality. In those studies, there was no significant difference between vegetarians and meat eaters in stroke mortality. The study did adjust for self reported high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, diabetes, and body mass index, which suggests that part of the associations might be attributed to these factors, it says."However, the lower risk in vegetarians and vegans remained marginally significant after adjustment for all of these factors," the study said.To read the full study, click 1389

An 11-year-old girl toting a loaded AR-15 assault weapon appeared Monday with her grandfather, who is supporting legislation that would allow visitors to Idaho who can legally possess firearms to carry a concealed handgun within city limits.Charles Nielsen addressed the committee that voted to send the legislation to the full House as Bailey Nielsen stood at his side with the weapon slung over her right shoulder, but did not say anything.“Bailey is carrying a loaded AR-15,” Charles Nielsen told lawmakers. “People live in fear, terrified of that which they do not understand. She’s been shooting since she was 5 years old. She got her first deer with this weapon at 9. She carries it responsibly. She knows how not to put her finger on the trigger. We live in fear in a society that is fed fear on a daily basis.”He said Bailey was an example of someone who could responsibly handle a gun, and lawmakers should extend that to non-residents.“When they come to Idaho, they should be able to carry concealed, because they carry responsibly,” he said. “They’re law-abiding citizens. It’s the criminal we have to worry about.”Republican Rep. Christy Zito, who is proposing the measure opposed by the three Democrats on the House State Affairs Committee, said the legislation is intended to clear up confusion about state gun laws. Backers also say it will give people the ability to defend themselves if needed.Idaho residents 18 and older are allowed to carry a concealed handgun within city limits in Idaho without a permit or training following a new law that went into place last summer. The legislation would extend that to any legal resident of the United States or a U.S. armed services member.“I stand here before you today as a mother and grandmother who has had to use a firearm to defend their child,” Zito said. She said two men once approached her vehicle with her daughter inside.“Even though I didn’t have to pull the trigger, just the fact that they could see it, and they knew that I had it, was the determining factor,” Zito said.Opponents say allowing teenagers to carry a concealed weapon without any required training within city limits is a bad idea and could lead to shootings. If the bill becomes law, Idaho would be among a handful of states that allow that type of concealed carry.“The vast majority of states require that a person get a permit before carrying a concealed gun in public,” said Diana David of Moms Demand Action, an organization that seeks public safety measures to protect people from gun violence. “That’s a common-sense policy.”(Photo & story courtesy: Keith Ridler, Associated Press) 2645

This is seriously messed up."The woman was injured in her face and abdomen and the man has injuries to his abdomen, GMP said. Both are in their 50s. AMHERST, N.Y. — The Better Business Bureau (BBB) is warning people to use caution when signing up for so-called "risk-free trials" online. Often, what looks like a free offer has fine print that results in a consumer getting unwanted products which are charged to your debit or credit cards. The internet and social media are filled with "free trial" offers promising you a chance to get a free product for a small shipping charge. However, the BBB found that many times people are not reading the fine print, which can be misleading and says a person is actually subscribing to receive products over time. Some New York victims have lost hundreds of dollars. And the problem is growing. The Federal Trade Commission reported the number of "free trial" complaints nearly doubling from 2015 to 2017.An investigation by the Better Business Bureau found that 72 percent of victims are women because the fraudulent ads often promote skin care products. In addition, the BBB found scammers are falsely claiming celebrities, like Oprah Winfrey and others, are endorsing their products. You can read the BBB investigation 1123
